I appreciate your videos. I've been a charter captain, boat owner (still own one), charter master, delivery captain for several decades and have seen so many people catch the dream. So often when they take delivery of the boat, (and sometimes I've sailed with them on their first voyage) something happens or their spirit changes and the boat becomes a floating RV that doesn't move and is really never touched again, nor do I really hear from them much again. In another case, the family worked on the boat for 2.5 years only to have it sink at its slip before their first real venture beyond a daysail. Heartbreaking. I know many of them, without the benefit of KZfaq, have gone through extreme angst with it as their boat has a for sale sign on it as it sits on the hard in the bone yard. However, some are still sailing and enjoying every journey....but they went into it with the awareness of the information you provide here. Thanks. You do the sport of sailing/yachting a great service.

Good comments! I've been a sailor since I was a little kid, and have owned sailboats on and off for the last few decades, with the last one owned for about a decade and a half. I've owned and operated a sailing school in the Pacific Northwest, and am now a Yacht Surveyor - between these activities, I've advised an awful lot of people regarding purchasing a vessel. Most novices who are picturing jumping into sailing and shortly thereafter, crossing an ocean, won't, or shouldn't. A great path is to take lessons, buy a decent, smaller boat than you would need for an ocean crossing, and learn to sail! Maybe charter a bit, in distant destinations. See how you like it without betting the whole farm. And rather than starting with a major refit, which often ends in tears, as a novice sailor, best to start with a fully functional boat that minimally meets your 'needs'. I've met couples and young families who've spent several entire summers (or winters in a Southern Climate) out cruising on a 24 foot sailboat that they bought for a few thousand dollars, which is a WAY better investment than blowing through a couple of hundred K and never getting comfortable with the basics, with a boat that winds up turning into a 'dock Queen' that is rapidly depreciating, tied to a dock and suffering maintenance neglect in salt water. Get out there doing coastal cruising on an affordable boat. Become a proficient sailor. And any destination in the world that you'd like to cruise, there are going to be decent boats you can charter, all ready to go waiting for you to take them off the dock, for less money than one little electronics upgrade or other small project will cost on a large cruising vessel. If, after all that, you still have a hankering to go cross oceans, and the budget left for it, fill your boots, and you'll likely have a much more sensible and cost-effective approach to it than a novice boater would. It's great that you offer your subscribers the opportunity to join you on deliveries - that sort of experience can really help people understand if sailing is 'for them'...

After many years of sailing smaller boats a friend and myself decided to buy an excharter 50 footer. We had growing families and wanted some space. We bought a sound ex Moorings First 501 in Saint Martin and sailed her back to the UK. We spent a bit of money fitting holding tanks and upgrading sails and rigging. Maybe we were lucky but two families had years of fun both in the UK and the med. Ok, she was worth very little at end, but we got a lot of sea miles for little money. In my seventies now I have gone full circle and day sail on a Contessa26 with my grandson.

You’re doing a great job and a great service to everybody by going directly to the point and being frank with everyone who’s interested in sailing.

As a delivery Capt. You should do a series on things like easiest to sail, most comfortable, yada yada.

I wonder what you think about 'sailing magic carpet'... They do the same thing, which is buying dumpsters and refitting them. Main difference is, that the guy is actually a boat builder. So they do end up with a sound vessel over a comparatively short timespan (compared to other KZfaqrs). They are currently on their second one and seemed to have been sold the first one for a good price. I think its a good example of what it actually takes to do the refitting thing if you are in to that.

This was entertaining and informative. I've been watching, "Restoring Josephine", about a British couple who bought a wood sailboat built in 1936. They got screwed by their surveyor and have been working on that boat for years. They did a superb job of restoration, but they'd readily admit that they'd rather have spent that time sailing.

In "fairness" to Atticus, they started with nothing, had to work in Mexico to fund their further sailing, built a KZfaq business that enabled them to buy the nice 40-footer, prudently looked past the survey to find and repair structural problems before setting off, got a dog I suspect as a furbaby substitute for the real thing (wise), proceeded cautiously across the Atlantic. They are pretty risk-averse so it's no surprise that offshore sailing with a baby that needs medical supervision lost its appeal. They do tend to make molehills into mountains, inflating the dangers faced and accomplishments achieved, which has gotten old. Lately, wife and I have watched their channel just to confirm our expectation that they will throw in the towel. RV next?

I can't argue against anything you say, but there are different paths. I'm not crossing oceans, but i was able to get sailing for $2k. I bought an islander 30 at an auction with old sails, bad paint and a brand new motor. I've put some money into it but i get to sail and i enjoy working on it. If i were going to do blue water i would probably look at it differently, but for the coastal and offshore cruising that i do, it's worked out pretty well.

Odd crafting channel started in Brazil, where EVERYTHING is harder and more expensive, except for labor costs. That being said, their achievement was enourmous.

I'm a retired merchant marine captain, and while my wife and I certainly don't want a KZfaq channel, or any other job, we love the sail life and see what you're talking about daily. However, we'd never buy some of those boats you touted either, damn sure not a 'bend-a-toe'. We bought an S&S 36 and left the states a few years ago. We wouldn't give up a year or 2 of this to refit or rebuild some wreck.. and we could. We take care of anything and everything as needed. Engine work, elec., solar, fiberglass, etc. The "KZfaq sailor" is a direct result of technological advances. 99% of these guys couldn't plot a course or figure set and drift if their screens went dark lol.

Been following you from the beginning.... Your spot on with these channels. Odd life spent all that time with a refit only to sail about a year, and then sell. What a waste of time and money. You were brutally honest. I say buy one of the boats you mentioned and maybe add solar and batteries and upgrade the electronics and go sailing.

the Odd Craft couple were based in Brazil and the boat market in Brazil is totally different. There are not a lot of options to buy and boats are way more expensive there. From a financial point of view in Brazil, it did made sense to buy that boat. It was actually a great deal there.

Great job with this analysis but I would comment that it would be more fair to show what you can buy for $50,000 than $160,000. I didn’t watch this couple channel but I am almost certain they didn’t have $165,000 5y ago to buy the vessel (hence they bought this wreck for $50k). They have been retrofitting this boat over a couple years which probably means they have been spending as they were earning money. My guess anyway.

My sea experience is just kayaking and just hadn't the time to sail but next year be different and probably have about 100 th euro for something. I agree with you for the average Joe. But Odd life wouldn't have got the views with a bavaria cruiser. And they are into the build. And they had a retractable keel and rudder. If you Price those boats they are hard to find and Way more than 160k. I dont think Atticus crew hired a capt to cross the atlantic. They had another couple with them. Riley and Elena had that super experienced woman with them when they crossed.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Sailing Zatara ... Why them? well Keith and his friend Chris run a mentorship program that is $3000 a year and I just struggle to see the value there. Every Month they do a "Free workshop". You should sit for one of them. Although Expedition Evans didn't take the wisest choices to get to their goal but I think they are in a pretty good spot now. Brett is going to be building a hardtop this winter he is going to layup himself. At least according to their last video. I'm also curious on your thoughts on SAIL LIFE. Ava and Mads. Mads LOVES the DIY side of boats and loves making content around the DIY stuff too. So it isn't ALL about adventure for them, it is more about the project. Mads does a great job of chronicling his projects. They are currently looking for ~50ft project boat too

a couple off years seems nothing when you see how long it's taken to re buid tallyho haha 7 years now and there stil going!! although the differance is thats a boat thats on another level!! that was toataly worth saving, you do make some good solid points, the only people sailing around the world video channal i really follow is sail into the sunset as i use to sail with them and saved all there life's to do it and could actualy sail before they decided to do it!! i'd quite happy get a fixer upper to work on but i guess it's because i have built things all my life, and been sailing all my life and can go sailing prity much when i want all i have to do is go down the harbour at the weekend when peope are going out witch is a good way to learn too as you'll find a lot off people are always looking for crew!!

Everyone agrees with you regarding the financial ROI based on someone who is buying a boat with no KZfaq plan associated with it. The major factor here is that they do not make their money on the boat, but making content for their KZfaq channel. They need a fixer up as their subject matter. Sail Life (Mads) rebuilt his boat - I'm sure there is no financial sense in what he did. Their patreons and viewers paid for the boat. There is an audience for them willing to donate. I agree with you about the boat S/V ODD. I would never buy a steel boat as well.

👍🤣😂 Maybe the main goal of these people, is to build their channels? There is another one in France, sailing seabird, which bought a boat for 1Euro and are doing a refit now. For some reason, many people seem to like watching people doing a refit of their dumbster. Same with the Channel sailing GBU, they never did a crossing, now they bought a homestead and continue to make videos. For most of them, the goal seems to be to build a business and make money from their channel and subscribers, and not so much to sail around the world. Basically the attention economy. They would buy a three legged dog if that would get them the attention and views. Please make a video about the channel Spear it Animal. They are one of the worst and just started.

Steel is not necessarily heavier than other materials for hull structure depending on the application. Usually around 150 feet or so is the length when steel becomes the material of choice due to loading and price. But if the application is to be a moderately heavy boat, then steel can be effective because hull structure is a smaller fraction of the overall displacement. Also, weight is not the only driver for speed. In most coditions that boats actually sail in, sail area to wetted surface ratio is more a driver than displacement. Look at Ted Hood heavy displacement boats. They are heavy, but low in wetted surface, so for well accommodated boats, the Hoods sail very well in lighter airs when the new fat assed generation of cruisers can't sail because they have too much wetted surface.

What this gentleman is forgetting to mention ( don’t forget he makes money with consulting and sales comissions…) is that all this channels didn’t had 200k or whatever. They payed half of it With the KZfaq channel and refit views. So they have a lot of equity at the end of the refit. I don’t think this public laundry was needed just to end the video selling you consulting … but hey.. one makes money doing how to video , another makes it using the first one and talking sh*t. Did it inspire confidence? Don’t know about you but… meh

KZfaq makes it look like anyone can do it....ABSOLUTELY FALSE!! We just spend months in the boatyard doing DIY, and it was still expensive. Yeah, we saved tens of thousands of dollars, but it was still expensive, and there are still things we'd like to do (just not in the budget). Watch youtube sailing channels for entertainment, not for a HOW TO (except chasing latitude) 😊😊

So you bring up a good point here and the reason i just try not to watch those sailing videos anymore. I'm just back from Mexico and 35,000 nm of sailing, and learned a thing or two. But these people all make the same mistakes over and over, mistakes that could have been avoided if they had read Roth, Kritchmer, or even the Pardys. They show pictures of the woman in a thong bikini, and show a few of sailing, but never the nitty gritty of sailing. Just my 2 cents worth...

If you want to learn about diesels Univeral diesels are basically Kubotas. Any farm auction will have those cheap. Yanmars are a bit harder to source though. Ebay maybe? Gotta be some from sunken boats or hurricane damage. Kubotas are kinda fun.

I saw Adventureman Dan interviewing some gal in Dominican Republic with boat Artha or something.. At least she has a back story why she bought that old thing.. But yeah.. Buying an ancient boat for 20k and spending another 24k over a year and it's not even close to being finished?! Hell no thanks

Agree with many things said but there is some commercial incentive in creating a KZfaq channel … rather than just looking at the cost of the vessel. Sponsorship, donations, viewings … I guess some of them made as much money again just by doing it that way and with cash keeping coming from the channel for years to come.

Project Atiicus, a nice middle-aged bought a Rollie Polly antique design sailboat. The wife got pregnant and was seasick 24 hours a day and he made the brilliant decision to cross the ocean at time. I wonder why the child was born with medical problems? I bet he wishes he could do that over. They seem like good parents.

I would really love a sailboat, with myhealth i need a furling mainsail though. My biggest fear is to buy a boat that has the worst setup and sailing behavior. Could you learn us what a good boat means? You mentioned a beam thats too short for the lenghth of the boat, thats super usefull to know!

I agree with the first couple of channels you pick on. But when it comes to Atticus sorry mate but you cannot compare a Pacific Seacraft with a beneteau production boat. Just apples to oranges. I think you probably should have picked their first boat which was more to your point of picking up an ill equipped boat and dumping a ton of time and effort ... the pacific seacraft is a strong boat that will always keep its value unlike the previous boats you covered which I agree are crap.

@chasinglatitudes The questioning of the ethics and diminished voracity of the truth in some of the KZfaq channels is something that I think you have done well to bring attention to ... especially in light of the possible consequences that could be incurred by unsuspecting pundits that have taken the sailing channels you mentioned to be a realistic version of boat life adventure. The KZfaqr's sailing channel dream is about getting someone else to pay for their lifestyle while creating a tribe of their own, which is well known in Internet parlance as the "thousand true fans" who are required to consume your content so you can earn a living. It's NOT a how-to of the best way to go SAILING. The tough pill to swallow is the number of "followers" or "patrons" that gush on about the very thing they are paying for, which is sometimes low-value entertainment. Unfortunately, I see this done poorly with cringe-worthy audio, mindless drone shots and, as you so eloquently point out, cry face and bikini shots. As well as the tug on the heartstrings cry's for help as their inexperience or lack of actually generating a viable income bites them in the arse Hey, don't get me wrong, I tune into the channels you mention and others for ENTERTAINMENT and if they, as CONTENT PRODUCERS, have managed to convince people to fund their dream of resurrecting dumpster fire boats ( as you call them ) Because that's the only way they are going to get on the water; all power to them As someone who understands the effort and time to film, edit and upload videos, I do not devalue the expertise and time it takes to commit to a video publishing schedule in the hope of earning a few coins to keep the dream alive. I enjoy watching some of the channels you have mentioned. Would I financially contribute to them? No, and if they can ethically feel okay about the ENTERTAINMENT content they are putting out to fund their lifestyles, kudos to them for creating an excellent gig and being able to go sailing on someone else's dime.

For 160k boat people: what you dont get is that they did NOT have 160k. They bought the cheap shitter and then elicited donations because people felt sorry for them and wanted to support the "little guys". If they had asked for 160k in donations to buy a nice boat people would not have given them the money. Also the repair process itself was supposed to make money by making videos on it. Its the same as with the idiot woh bought a flooded mclaren P1 that costs as much to repair as used car would cost but the revenue is in the youtube earnings from documenting the repair process.

I like their business model though, they buy the dirtiest looking boat for a much inflated for video price than use sponsorships, KZfaq and patrons money to fix it up, telling everyone how much they appreciate them and how loyal they are than immediately sell that boat with KZfaq advertising for silly money than do it all over again on a much more expensive catamaran again with your money, perfect, and if they lose on the sale they’ve only really lost your money anyhoo😊

I understand you downgrade others to market yourself and your services. That's a bit of a sick game to play but it's your choice. Regarding the KZfaqrs for the yacht "Odd" to compare what they did to buying a $165,000 sailing boat right off the bat is obviously not relevant as it's a fair bet they didn't have that money in the beginning. They probably borrowed the majority of the $50k to buy the original wreck then used KZfaq to inspire people to donate to their project. So I'd suggest the vast majority of the $120,000 came from donations, sponsorships, affiliate and add revenues. At the end of the day they earned $165,000 in their pocket and now have a choice to either play the game again on a new bigger and more valued project or a deposit on a house and start their "normal" life or go to a casino and blow it all on a stupid weekend. It's their choice. While the thought of inexperienced people doing yacht rebuilds and taking off to sail around the world is highly risky to down right dangerous to themselves and more importantly to the people who's job it is to rescue these inexperienced beginners when they inevitably get into serious trouble. The bottom line is, it is their choice, they did it, they stuck with it and completed it. So by all measures they were successful. It's easy to be a critic, much harder to create something. As can be seen here, it took them years and an extreme amount of commitment and work to complete the project. You on the other hand only took minutes to degrade their efforts.
