Here's something you have to keep in mind with Yozora. KH1 came out in 2002, and Versus XIII was announced in 2006. He had to at least have some sort of idea for it.

As a huge riku fan (with all the obvious parallels between riku and sora and yozora) i noticed that there can easily be a point in VR when riku becomes yozora. This can mainly be theorized because of the ending of kh3 (yozora’s interest in riku), riku’s ties to “never losing” in kh1, and the fact that riku in multiple points of kh does “save” sora.

nomura is a tortured soul. he's super creative and full of ideas, but SE won't give him anything outside of KH and disney limits what he can do with KH saying "dude, we have our own brand identity; you can't just do whatever the hell you want with our IPs attached."

I still think of Noctis, not as a Final Fantasy character that Nomura wanted to put into Kingdom Hearts, but as a Kingdom Hearts character that was going to be introduced through Final Fantasy. The parallels between him and Sora have been there since the first Versus XIII trailers. Yozora isn't in Kingdom Hearts because Nomura's salty; he's in Kingdom Hearts because that's where he always belonged.

After hearing this, I think I've realized something. He didn't try to make Noctis from scratch, he took Noctis from his concepts and ideas from KH1. But since he couldn't finish that game hes using them in KH again. The secret ending to KH1 draws A LOT of parallels to the trailer we got for FFv13. Dark city, swarmed by enemies, running up the building. What if he's not trying to reuse ideas from V13, but instead reusing ideas from KH1. And it's no secret that Noctis' name is the opposite of Sora's name in meaning. Even places like Scala ad Caeum were taken from unused ideas. In this case he took inspiration from "Cable town." Whose to say that he just makes up this story as he goes along? Whose to say he didn't just plan ahead.

What if Yozora and his world is a concept he has had even before he started this Disney thing? He probably thought about making an original game himself before KH came to the table. Would you imagine it? And let's be honest: guy's a master mind. He had a lot of talent for original stuff. I mean, when he is not dealing with someone else's work like Disney or FF. I want to see him work on more original stuff of his own.

He definitely hadn't planned out Yozora way back in the day of KH1. Heck those words in the opening of KH1 were only there cos he was told to put words in the opening I read. Whoever he planned to have speak those lines later was definitely not Yozora or a precursor to him back in the day of KH1.

This is silly. After watching the beta trailer for KH1, it’s really easy to just say “he planned this for 20 years omg what a genius” But no. It’s most likely a scrapped plot element he decided to bring back. Sora disappearing and all that. This “character” he spoke of could have been Yozora but I can say I’m pretty certain by this point Yozora didn’t have a name or character design. It could have been another character from KH1 for all we know. Could have been Kairi. He’s way too vague and people eat it up as genius storytelling without realizing how easy it is to put in unexplained things in a story and give it a purpose later in sequels. Much later. Edit: Better yet. Not even a scrapped plot element. He could have fucking been referring to Roxas. Roxas wasn’t even a thought to us after KH1’s release. I’m sure Nomura had that planned since the beginning at least. That’s much more reasonable

It is official, Nomura is just on a different level than the rest of us. Perhaps the plot wasn't just made up as it went along like so many people seem to think.

I think the "secret" was referring more to what was revealed to be Mickey guiding Sora through the Station of Awakening. But it wouldn't surprise me if Nomura had ideas of Noctis/Yozora already roughed out in his head.

Random Theory: Kairi was supposed to say those words. She fell into a trance before the island was destroyed and when she came to Sora turned into magic dust while a duck and dog save her. Then she hug a shadow monster and it became Sora then she went another world then shortly after got sucked onto the shores of her island as it was reforming as Sora and her drift worlds apart. It would have also been an interesting way to introduce the idea that Kairi forgets Sora. "Maybe that boy in my memories were just wild dreams" or something along those line. If it was Noctis? That'd be very random since that'd be around the time FF12 was in development and wouldn't be released until about 4 years after Kingdom Hearts 1 and about 1 year from KH2.

Yozora was a concept he wanted to bring into Kingdom hearts it never got brought into it, so he wanted to bring it into versus 13, that didn't end up happening so now it's back in kingdom hearts.

If I had to guess it was probably originally Roxas or sora saying those words as Roxas was already mostly planned in his head and the words make sense to sora

I think Nomura does a good mix of planning ahead and retroactive writing So while I don't believe he planned ahead that far it is cool to see him take small things from older games and make them relevant, it allows us to look at all those games with a more keen eye as he might just make anything important.

The Ansem Report podcast touched on something similar, but not as far back... After KH2 was released and the team moved to work on FF Versus XIII, Nomura was quoted as saying he HAD to finish that game before he released KH3. At the time, we all thought it was just logical progression of finishing one project before starting another. Without this context, it certainly sounds like it. But considering this hint, the interview, and the content of the ReMIND episode....

I disagree. There is no way it could have been planned that far in advance. What Yozora is saying in the end is an echo of the beginning of KH1 to show that this is a new beginning, not the other way around. Although if you look at the beta trailer of KH1, Riku tells Sora he is about to disappear (which spoils the end of Kh3, lol). I guess it's more about common themes that are important to Nomura and he just keeps them in mind for the right occasion.

something interesting to note is the secret ending, at the time of its creation no concrete plans were made on that narrative of KHII, and the secret ending as described by Nomura; was more of an amalgam of concepts and ideas for the sequel and story going forward, with that in mind, alot of the vague text and dialogue quoted in it andDeep Dive start to feel less random and more hints at the very ideas were starting to surface now, (bare with me im absolutley grasping at straws here and this is all just speculation) "a world without you" (touching on ideas similar to Sora fading away at the end of KH3 after saving Kairi) "A Fragmented Tale (multiple sides to the same story, simmilar to how Yozora reflects Sora in name) and even "The Eyes Will Close" with its vague connections to being asleep, or dreaming which is a prevalent theory to what Sora's journey up to this point has been, which is ALSO reflected in some of the writings in deep dive "maybe our journey was for nothing.." obviously some of this was re-contexualized for genuine cannon events within KH2 but in broad strokes you can see the blooming of ideas that are only now starting ti fully come together, before Roxas was evern a thing the idea of an "alternate sora" looking for, or trying to save Sora was present, just like Yozora, hell~ ANOTHER SIDE ANOTHER STORY??? like sure because of hindsight we think Roxas but if you dont what does that sound like its referring to? another side of sora, multiple journey's hapening concurrently, not only has that theme been present in KH for a loong time from DDD, to birth by sleep, it absolutley reflects what it feels Yozora is going to embody. now once again this is just conjecture and speculation, but clearly nomura has had some base line ideas of where he wanted the story to go, especially if back in 2001 atleast 4 games were considered, who's to say vague plot ideas werent already being planned out? some of an alternate Sora, in a far away dark city, whom was not only fighting, but looking to save, or find Sora? what we saw became Roxas, but that idea has lingered, along with the little unanswered questions that all start to make more sense the more you think about it,,why do final fantasy characters just seem to be present as natives to the world of KH? but not Cloud or Sephiroth? why all these disney characters? especially with the sharp contrast between yozora's world and Sora's it almost feels like everything Sora knows, WE know about KH might not even be real, even a dream? who's to say, as insane as my ramblings are maybe some interesting thought nuggets wriggled into there, take everyhting i say with like a dumptruck of salt im just shooting ideass

I would think he is talking about Sora's nobody Roxas. He might not even had a name for him back then but thinking about Deep dive and Roxas story it's this for really or not makes more sense. I've definitely been enjoying this series!! Getting a look behind the curtains is really enjoyable! You and PlayStacin are pretty much the only people (at least on my radar) putting KH content out on the regular. Even the X Keepers are doing little to nothing with KH these days. One of the biggest mysteries of KH (to me) has been the portrayal of sora as a king, sitting on a throne with a crown. As well as a crown necklace. Many people dismiss it as just a "design aspect" or "non canonical artwork" but I think weve all learned that Nomura doesnt do anything by accident or just for effect. From the eyeball on xNorted- keyblades to the giant black heartless looming over ansem in kh1, all skimped over, all had story elements. The fact that "verum rex" means true king Is what baffles me the most about this, along with the toy box characters acknowledging yozora looks like sora when he clearly doesnt.

As a KH fan you should understand the answer because it's kinda simple. Nomura exists in the past present and future at the same time there is no other explanation.

As awesome as it would be that Nomura had it all planned out since KH1 to have -Noctis- I mean Yozora in his game, that's not the case. He planned for someone to say those lines at the end of KH1, so it was supposed to be someone in KH1, or else Roxas from Another Side, Another Story.

I really wouldn't be surprised if this has been his plan since the beginning. We got the first Versus 13 trailer in 2006. Kingdom hearts came out 5 years earlier. KH was always supposed to have heavy Final Fantasy presence, they are vital to the story in KH1. Nomura may have already developed the concept of Noctis and VS13 way back in 2001 and he even stated once that Noctis was always supposed to be connected to Sora in some way. Versus 13 was always meant to be connected to Kingdom Hearts. Then we have the secret ending of KH1. The parallels between that memory skyscraper battle and the battle in the first versus trailer are pretty obvious.

Yo if we're talking about the words the pop up, without any voice-over, referencing "You're the one who will open the door." to Sora... Then that's already been confirmed as King Mickey. By Nomura. You can Google "who speaks to Sora at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts," or something similar, and it should come up.

lets not blow this out of proportion but i do think this means something just not what you said. To me it sounds like one of 2 things either roxas was going to say it at the end since I feel that would make sense considering his spotty memory maybe he would wake up in kh2 and think that was all a dream. Thats what i feel the most likely answer is. But the second possibility is that there was a character not specifically names but the idea of someone who would parallel or have to save him and what not so maybe yozora or noctis specifically werent made but the idea of someone like that being in kh sequels may have been a thing it mightve also been a scraped idea that nomura decided to pick up to revive his boy noctis

What line is Nomura referring to?

It's possible that one of the things Nomura considered during the pre-production of Kingdom Hearts was an additional character but had no way to add them into the story. But as time went on, and some problems like VERSUS never happening, now felt like the time to retread old ideas, see if anything can be gleaned from it as something viable for the story. Maybe Yozora was merely a blank slate of an idea that only with the start of a new saga can lead to something new.

Yes, Nomura IS that crazy. He said something pointing to this idea since Re:mind. He said that "I've been having these weird thoughts lately. Like, is any of this for real or not?" was always a more important line than any of us realized. Nomura claimed that at one point, KH was in bad shape and looking like it might not get the green light unless he could come up with something to really spark the higher-ups' interest. That line and the yet to be revealed significance behind it is what got Kingdom Hearts the green light. I'm so sick and tired of people saying "Nomura comes up with this shit as he goes."

I highly doubt this series had an overarching plan.

The original one to actually say those line is supposed to be Versus XIII Noctis... Yozora is just the afterthought. That explains everything. Nomura isn't bitter about FFXIII... It is integral to his storytelling.

I do remember hearing from a recent interview about him discussing that beginning line and how he always loved it and really wanted to bring it back at some point and it fit well at the point that we are at now, so I do believe he's always been waiting to put it down in game for good as a callback, but who knows if he had that idea it was going to be Yozora this whole time. Nomura is such a mad man.

We went from Character designer in one of the greatest games of all time (Final Fantasy 7) to lead/game director for one of the newest greatest games of all time (Final Fantasy 7 Remake) because of his work with Kingdom Hearts.

Although I love the idea of it being Yozora, but if I'm being realistic I think it was supposed to be Roxas. Especially considering Roxas gets memories from Xion about sora's live. So he would question him self about having weird dreams and if any of it would be real

Honesty I think it could’ve been any other character and not just Yozora saying those words. But looking at how the story played out then maybe Nomura just decided later on after vs13 and XV that Yozora would say the opening phrase.

If this interview is from way before kingdom hearts 3 started development, there's no way the concept of yozora could have existed. Director Nomura probably meant that another character such as Mickey or Riku were supposed to say the intro dialogue, but such an event was scrapped. yozora probably came into existence as a concept at least during or after the time of kingdom hearts 3D. Then again, yozora could have been a concept in the mind of the developers before they had the chance to make it a reality. There's always unused content in games.

I think it’s more accurate to say that Nomura probably had an idea for the beginning and the end, but he didn’t know how he wanted to there. He probably had, in lack of better words, a brain storm web of scattered ideas, but didn’t know how to connect them. As KH became more and more popular, it became harder To connect the dots. He may not have had Yozora planned out to a T, but he knew what he wanted to do in the “end” or at least the end of the Xehanort Saga.

If it wasn't Kairi's line but was indeed the character that have become Yozora, I don't think it was planned since KH1, but was recycled for KH3. Yozora already seems like using ideas that had been scrapped from other IP and Noruma finally having a chance to use them.

Gematsu just released the translation of an interview with Nomura where he says: “Typically I plan one sequel ahead of whatever that I am working on. When I was working on the original Kingdom Hearts, I was thinking about Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. For Kingdom Hearts II and Roxas, I was thinking of starting the game with a new protagonist, but didn’t have a concrete vision at the time.” So, nope, he didn't teased anything. This also ends all these theories of Nomura being this master planner when he makes up the story as it goes (the stories are entertaining, don't get me wrong, we keep coming back after all).
