Aki/Akiza's backstory - Aki is my favorite of the female protagonists and her backstory gets me every time. 3. Diva's possession - I didn't really live Diva as a character, but even he didn't deserve to be possessed by Zorc. I saw Darkside of Dimensions in Theaters, and that really messed with me. 2. Kaiba's Suicide attempt - need I say more? 1. Marik murders his dad - that's all I'll say.

The studio behind 5DS were definitely high on some strong stuff if they thought "Hmm, you know what we need for this new Yu-Gi-Oh spinoff, hanging people and torturing actual children with electricity on screen, that'll boost ratings :D!" was ok

I feel like Yuya's parental abandonment issues were pretty dark. Something that's traditionally played much lighter or with little/no impact in most of the series is shown to leave some significant psychological scars, from a commonplace trope in the series. It's not violent or graphic, but it's incredibly dark psychologically. There's also Gozoboro Kaiba initially grooming Seto to be a vessel for the mind of his biological child who "sorta" died, which is all kinds of messed up. The creation of the Super Fusion card, turning Judai's friends against him with negative emotions, and psychologically torturing them, before forcing him to accidentally sacrifice them. Yubel was pretty sadomasochistic as well, though not as overtly horrifying as Sergey. Ryou Bakura's mental state when it comes to the ring, knowing it's evil but not being able to resist its will. Seto's suicide threat. Marik torturing Mai by eliminating her memories of loved ones. And especially when Haga/Weevil ripped up the insect card (Gokibore I think?) in front of Yami, pretending it was Yugi's soul card, destroyed forever, and then the darkness of the ensuing Berserker beat down Yami retaliated with. Yu-gi-oh is fucking dark.

The idea of O’Brian’s duel is even more horrific when you look at his eyes, the dude went from stage 1 to stage death of PTSD. Emotionly numb by the end of it.

I would also consider Kaiba's suicide attempt in the duel against Yami Yugi in one of the first episodes of Duelist Kingdom.

Episodes 60-62 of Yu-Gi-Oh! aired in Japan on June 19th, 2002, June 26th, 2002, and July 3rd, 2002. They aired in the U.S. on February 8th, 2003. The film SAW came out Oct 29th, 2004 with a short film that was pitched to Lions Gate Entertainment in 2003. I would say that the movies took from Yu-Gi-Oh!, not the other way around.

Dylan u forgot to add this really f*cked up scene to the top 5, maybe top 2 actually. Might even be #1, dub watchers prepare urself: Marik's dad heats up the blade of a knife, starts cutting marik with it. Then Marik's dark side is born, and he gets marik's dad pinned against a wall, stabs him to death with the millenium rod then marik's dad's corpse is shown with quite a lot of blood behind it. Then marik who is back to his senses sees his dad's corpse screams in horror.

Most of my favorite dark moments are from 5DS: -Lúa, Luca and Jack Vs Aporia -Sawyer's torturing Misty's brother -Jack vs Carly -(Probably my favorite) Yusei vs Bruno 😢

One of the darkest moments for me was Dark Marik vs. Yugi. I mean, first of all, we all know how twisted Dark Marik was. But I thought his final shadow game was pretty jacked up. Torturing Yugi throughout the entire duel was incredibly morbid.

I remember watching Tobi's death in sub. my reaction was "wha...HOLY SHIT!" as soon as the blood curdling scream stops and the flat lining begins.

My dark moments list: (No particular order) Marik's Past Alister's Past and his little brother's death Raphael's Past How the Marik vs. Joey duel ended and how Joey was on the verge of death. Crump wanting to possess Tea's body Yuri carding Yusho and showing Yuya the card with a messed up look on his face Valen's Past

Professor Viper/Cobra's fell to death had left a deep memory in me, and the fact that his son's gruesome death makes things worse, and his action justified

I remember one moment from arc v. It was during Zarc's backstory when he became violent duelist and started hurting other duelists and there was scene where a duelist was so badly injured that he spat out blood.Even if he was shadowed it was pretty damn disturbing at least for me and the entire fact how he fused with his monsters, became one mega monster and demolished entire original dimension is messed up too.I bet there were a lot of injured and killed people.

I know this video is old, but the Arkana episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! aired 3 years before the Saw movie was released.

One dark element I remember is the entire premisse of the future in 5D's. Seeing Aporia's backstory full of dispair, full of death. Zone's history of actually bringing back hope to the people, only to end up losing it himself and end up being the actually last human on the planet.

5ds is the darkest of all the Yugioh series so far. It makes me appreciate that I got into the subbed version of Yugioh instead of living off the dub. Also, what other type of top 10 or 5 list might you do soon?

Here is my list in no particular order just what comes to mind. * Machine Emperor Genocide, which is Zero Reverse on a global scale pretty much, and the whole reason why the antagonists of Yugioh 5ds do what they did. (Justified Evil) * Fall of Atlantis - all the citizens are corrupted into demons including Dartz'a wife who he then kills. * Carding/Heartland Invasion of Arc V - until it was revealed there is a way to reverse the process, we and the characters believed that any one carded was dead for good. and of course the practically genocide of Heartland is messed up in itself. * Im gonna cheat here and have 2 manga onlys- Marik's dark half kills his dad (check it out for yourself), and Trapping Mai in Penalty Game in anime it was hourglass of sand which would drown her and her memories, in manga it was parasitic insects devouring her and her memories (she was saved both times) In anime that event haunts her and leads her right into Dartz's hand. *Professor Cobra's fall, he wasnt the best of villains of Gx but the way Yubel made him commit suicide by pretending to be his son who he wanted to revive and he follows the spectre off the platform to his death is pretty dark way of saying "You failed me" both from the son and Yubel. *Massacre of Kul Elna - Priest Akhenadden brainwashes his soldiers and orders them to kill the entire village of thieves and murderers to create the 7 Millennium Items, leaving only 2 things: a vengeful Bakura and a way for the Dark One to return. * Death of Kaito - He beat his rival, he won the Numeron Dragon aka the key to the Numeron code, and he died on the moon due to failure of spacesuit, pretty dark for a hero's death. That's all i can think of right now still great list ya had!

Damn, this one gave me chills. You counting up to these messed up moments was not something I expected, you did an excellent job with this one. I have to admit I've forgotten how dark Yu-Gi-Oh can be for a children's anime. That was your best video so far, Keep up your awesome work! Also, I'm glad you decided to start making Top Ten's instead of Top Five's which can be really limiting at times. On another note, I don't mind "dark" plot elements in general, but the things you dug up there seriously cross the line. If the show wants to kill a character, either do it clean or if not, keep it in line with the current atmosphere. Carly's murder comes to mind, it wasn't overly gory but left a great impact.

Man 5Ds is fucking brutal but I still think it's the best Yu-Gi-Oh show we've got. It has mature themes, awesome action, interesting and gripping lore, characters that are fully fleshed out and an incredible storyline. This isn't to say that the other shows aren't awesome as well, it's just that 5Ds kinda knocks it out of the water for me.

One of the darkest moments that I think you missed out on is Zarc destroying the city and attempts to kill various people. Zone, Aporia, Antonomy, and Paradox's future where everyone is dead, the Mecklord Emperors have destroyed the world, and they are the only survivors. Soo many dark parts of Yugioh. the kamishiro twins lives both past and present in zexal are what i think are the most disturbing and horrific thing in ygo like, in their past life their parents die and nasch/shark becomes king at what 15? then merag/rio basically commits suicide in front of her brother when vector attacks their kingdom. and as nasch leads his army he finds this little girl who looks exactly like merag and befriends her. skip ahead to after the vector nasch duel and we see that all of nasch's army is dead and gone along with the little merag lookalike. nasch even cradles her dead body in his arms?? and shes a literal child like five years old???? then in their present life when they themselves were like five they were involved in a terrible car crash that killed both their parents??? and then rio got burned alive and was in a coma??????? of course then there's shark's identity crisis when he learns about his past life and that he's actually a barian / a part of the evil gang his friends are trying to defeat like.... that all happened to two people of course all the barians past lives i think are very very messed up and my heart hurts whenever i think about it cause they all died in horrible ways when they were just teens

Hey! Guess what?! Read Volume 12 of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga because Pandora/Arkana is actually CUT by the saw blade in a few panels. So, I know that Yu-Gi-Oh! the manga is much darker than what the TV shows portray...

I think you should've done an honourable mentions segment for this video because there were definitely quite a few others dark moments that occurred: - Mai getting tortured by Marik during the duel and slowly dying after the duel (DM) - an implied genocide on the XYZ Dimension (Arc-V) - Pegasus' getting the Millennium Eye from Shaddi and getting it ripped out from Yami Bakura (DM) - Antinomy/Vizor/Bruno's Death (5Ds) - the back stories of the DOMA people (DM) - Amon Garam/Adrian Gecko sacrificing his friend Echo to achieve the power of Exodia (GX) - Vetrix/Tron's accident (ZEXAL) - a Cult (Society of Light) coming to Duel Academy and slowly bringing in students to join (GX) [at least that's what I think] Also, knowing ZEXAL, ARC-V, and VRAINS seem to be following the patter of DM, GX, and 5Ds respectively, do you think VRAINS will have some dark elements like 5ds did? (although I don't think VRAINS will reach the level of darkness 5Ds did, I could see being trapped in the Data Wind, where I'm assuming the Virtual Reality Duels will take place, and then die in real life when you lose a duel being a possible story for a season)

Interesting video! I appreciate the amount of research done! However, I would still consider the slaughter in Kul Elna, during the "Memory World" or the "Dawn of the Duel" arc to be pretty brutal too, as seeing such a horrific event is what made Theif Bakura what he is.

Dylan hate to break it to you but that's not lynching, that's hanging...Lynching involves burning a body, as in tied up against a stake (was not uncommon for it to be a cross). But yeah the spider string acted as a noose so that's not lynching

Actually the darkest moment to me was what happened to Otogi’s dad in the manga, I won’t say what exactly happened but it’s extremely messed up and made me almost stop reading the Yugioh manga for a moment.

Honestly, my darkest moment in the entire franchise is the mass assimilation in Zexal. Not only do thousands of brainwashed people instantly disintegrate and get their souls sent to Barian World(Flip/Hyori included), but almost the *entire* Zexal crew eventually suffers the same fate. The only scenario that ties with this is Kite's lunar death scene.

Gotta remember that the Shadow Realm was invented by 4Kids, in the original show people died instead, either due to physical or/and mental injuries. Also the pre-cards arcs from the original manga has the main characters killing other people
