He maybe you guys could help me. I'm a DM of about a year of practicing, I have run several short 5e campaigns with several groups and for the most part I absolutely love running games, crafting worlds and adventures for my players but I have a new group of players that I ran across a delicate problem. I have several house rules that I was very up front with these new players, who my wife and I have been playing with for months now, and they haven't been a problem until now. Firstly, is a Coup-de-Gras rule I borrowed from 3e and 3.5. (pretty much copy/pasted it after a bit of translation) Secondly, and the biggest point of contention, is a "Three-strikes and you're out" rule. If the player is reduced to a negative HP number from an attack and reduced to unconsciousness three times between a long rest, that character dies of shock. The reasoning is simple, the mind of characters should only be able to endure so much before it falls apart and getting hit by a fireball, a lightning bolt then a lucky Kobold sling attack crit, eventually your brain just can't handle that much trauma. The rule is meant to try and keep players from doing stupid things I have been very careful with balancing encounters, spending hours pouring over scenarios to make sure that the threat of this is virtually nil at best but certainly a threat at worst in the case of specifically designs boss-fights. The most recent session was a dungeon crawl against kobolds, and giant spider and a Bugbear enforcer who muscled his way and bullied his way into leading this small tribe of kobolds. Keep in mind these players are now level 6 and the party consists of a Barbarian, Rogue and a Druid. All the encounters are easy or medium difficulty and only the Rogue took more than 10 damage. After the session the player of the Barbarian started arguing with me about the house-rules I laid down and began trying to convince me to drop the rule because "I don't know what's going to happen and I feel that I have to retire him." Again, I was caught by surprise and after half-an-hour of trying to explain the rule and the intent behind it, she believes I'm just trying to bully and punish characters for spell and ability choices. (My wife is very fond of Healing Spirit, so the fact her druid did not take that spell seemed to be correlation or causation, just not true). I promised to think on the situation but she still kept trying to get me to completely remove the rule. I don't know exactly what to do, I have thought on implementing the Healing Surge optional rule, but that seems like taking the delicate balance I have been trying to keep in encounters and completely throwing it out of whack. Removing it means that these characters just get to pop up with nary a serious consequence for charging into a hallway full of traps and getting their butts whooped soundly and just pop back up like a sick game of whack-a-mole. After this last session, I'm having some serious doubts about keeping this group going because this is not the first time I've tried bending over backwards for this player specifically and the only other players is her friend and my wife. (I apologize for any misspellings or whatnot, I wrote this with about two hours of sleep)

I don't know if this was the intent, but I can totally see Yuan Ti having a charisma bonus and being emotionless as tied together. Sociopaths through history have those two traits ascribed to them, and with Yuan Ti being that sort of horrific cruel evil, it sort of made sense to me. I see them being very good at twisting people to do what they want.

I had a city of Yaun-ti that devoted 3 generations (6,000 years) of their people to doing good and right acts in the name of twin Coatle gods that promised these Yuan-ti to have holy salvation of they did this. A civil war erupted and the good aligned yuan-ti are at the brink of collapse and asked for aid from the near by high elves (desert dwelling in this setting thus near by the Yaun-Ti jungle city.) To assist in defending the Holy temple left with the 5,999th year coming to a close and needes that temple to be open and clear so the twins can come to this plain and heal the souls of the Yaun-ti and release them from the evil contract signed by the Yaun-ti of many millinia ago. This was done around lvs 5-8 and we still talk about this particular set up and city 3 years later. A player from that game made a yuan-ti from that city 2 campaigns later.

I told every NPC I ever met that I was an emissary of Draconia (black Dragonborn) and that I was there to help.... my party never realized I was plotting to become their leader and lead them back to my clan to convert or eat. I also had a fallback plan of teaching all these uninformed people’s that Yuan-Ti are actually Dragonborn and that we were all lawful good peoples or something. It was a great run. One thing you could do is swap Dark Vision with a home-brew Heat Vision that doesn’t necessarily allow you to see in the dark, but rather detect radiant body heat. That would allow you to see through spells like invisibility, but wouldn’t technically give you advantage in dark environments because you still can’t really see anything not giving off heat.

The only time the yuan-ti have figured prominently in one of my games was a short homebrew module. In it the players were trying to stop what was about to be a war between the yuan-ti and the dragonborn. The yuan-ti were kind of like cuckoos: they secretly deposited their eggs among the nests of the dragonborn, to be raised as changelings. The party failed rather spectacularly at some rolls talking to the yuan-ti, though, and were tricked into thinking the dragonborn were STEALING the yuan-ti eggs. The party decided they had to "save" the eggs from the dragonborn. Aggressively flawed plans were made, bad dice rolls followed, and a stubborn refusal to retreat in the face of overwhelming odds ended in one of the only TPK's I've ever DM'ed.

I love that you are using a Crown Royal bag for I assume your dice. My D&D groups from the 90s always used those too! In fact, I still use one today! As far as from a roleplaying standpoint, I play a Yuan-ti that views other people as tools to achieve a goal. Some tools are useful (Party members), others are not. The fun part of this is that the players will have to remain relevant to the Yuan-ti. If I'm playing evil, then my evil side is just totally selfish. This works great when you are only viewing people as tools. Everything is basically for me and you are just a means for me to get what I want, either because I can't do it myself, or as a matter of convenience, because you can do something for me so I don't have to put myself in danger.

Yuan-ti PC’s that are actually mutated and more human than snake make such interesting characters. Like a yuan-ti that’s raised to be emotionless and selfish by their clan/cult but in reality, their humanity makes them feel emotions and they end up in denial as a defence/survival tactic? Absolutely valid.

Regarding the Yuan-Ti's charisma bonus despite their lack of emotion, it reminds me of an episode of Community where the gang meets Britta's ex-bf and he's a carnie with nothing special about him. Despite this Jeff falls into a trap of trying to impress him. It turned out that he was brain damaged, unable to feel shame and didn't care what others thought of him and uninterested in their welfare, which made him irresistible to people who hate themselves.

I would definitely never own a snake (although that’s also partly because I have a moral thing against owning non-domesticated animals as pets). And I’m not even afraid of them in the phobia sense - although my mom is as she grew up on a farm where they are a lot more dangerous than they are where we lived now and they could really terrorize the chickens and goats. My mom was also chased by a severed snake head as a young child so the fear runs deep. xD ...BUT, I find snake/serpent races absolutely fascinating and mystical in fiction. I love them! My Yuan’ti Pureblood monk was my first D&D character ever.

Played a Yuan-Ti Warlock of the Great Old One who people thought was a Draconic Sorcerer by appearance. Made a pact while drowning with stone boots on. Now is being hunted by the criminal underworld. Lost half an arm while escaping capture that was replaced by a tentacle arm. Had the Disguise Self invocation, loved the role play potential.

I had this idea for a yuan ti green dragon sorcerer. Mechanically I liked the idea of being able to twin ray of sickness and some other powerful spells. I also like being able to drop a stinking cloud and cloud kill on yourself. The idea was to pick up a hand full of thematic spells and focus more in manipulation and battle field control. Things like Hypnotic pattern, slow, dominates, holds and illusions. Pick up twin spell, subtle spell and extend spell for meta magic maybe. RP wise I was going with something like every so often yuan ti society sends out spys to check on the rest of the world and kind of chronicle whats happening and if need be influence things to benefit the Yuan ti as a whole. These spies would infiltrate society. My character was going to be pretending to be an adventurer and a kind of hit man. I wanted to go with robes and a mask to cover the snake features as much as possible. If anyone asked about the scales just play it off as part of your draconic ansestry. I really like the idea of a party having a two faced forked tongue monstrosity in their midst and they are none the wiser. I love the idea of the party having that one evil character that no one knows is evil but is secretly using the party to achieve personal goals.

I don't know about you, but if a masked and robed person specializing in poison and illusion joined my party, our group would immediately suspect them of being all kinds of evil.
@stevemorris3746
@stevemorris3746 5 жыл бұрын
@@defiantnight2668 Suspension of disbelief. I imagine all kinds of people in DnD worlds travel around cloaked, hooded or masked. Perhaps they wear the mask because of a horrible disfigurement or because they are on the run from a corrupt tyrant? Or maybe what ever religion they observe require it? Maybe they are trying to look cool and edgy? To the players it might come off as sinister, but to the characters its probably far more common place. As for the magic, poison and illusion magic is not inherently evil like necromancy can be. If it was Wizards would have a serious stigma about them. If we are judging based on appearance and spells then rouges, wizards and warlocks would all be viewed upon with suspicion of evil intent. Rouges often deploy means of trickery and slight of hand. Even going so far as to disguise themselves and pretend to be some one else in a calculated act of deception. Wizards and warlocks both consort with demons and powers beyond common or mortal comprehension. My point is any band of haphazard adventurers that wander around destroying things for money and robbing every corpse they see with no thought of the consequences could also be seen as, to use your own words, "All kinds of evil."

My personal setting is called Dance of the Nine. There are nine separate worlds that do not (presently) interact, and each of them is rather species-specific. One of the worlds is draconic/reptilian in theme and contents. The draconic pantheon rules the world, and the sentient races include kobolds, dragonborn, lizardfolk, tortles, yuan-ti, etc. Makes for an interesting consideration, figuring out how they interact in that context.

I went ahead and shoved snakefolk into my Curse of Strahd campaign, in the amber temple. Their gathering parties are beefy, careful, and carry "Protection from Divination" amulets to shield themselves from Strahd, effectively operating under his nose while corrupting themselves with the temple's powers. I was a tad afraid of mixing my idea of snakefolk with what one of my players embodied when they played a yuan-tii that had emotions, but I can totally sell the idea that the character has hung around the party for so long that they've lost their initial "emotion void" that the Yuan-Tii tribe maintains via their echo-chamber of worshipping.

Well you see, Poison isn't a _biological_ affliction but a spiritual one! Yuan-ti obviously, _obviously_ don't have souls - much like undead who are also immune to poison. Because they're bad guys, obviously. _Obviously._ While Warforged, being victims of mean old bad people who made them to fight a war - and wars are bad obviously, _obviously._ So the poor, innocent *HUNKS OF WOOD AND METAL* that didn't ask for a war, totally have souls because they're victims, not warriors, definitely not war-makers - just victims, and are therefore good guys because victims are always good guys, never bad - victims don't do bad things obviously, _obviously._ Means the warforged, who are not soulless war-machines, can have their precious soul poisoned by like... A rat, that is more likely to break it's teeth on the metal body of the Warforged. Obviously. _Obviously..._

One Yuan-ti character I came up with was basically a Call of Cthulhu investigator in a former life. Sarah Pagecount was a scholar and university professor, who loved her books more than people. Until she got involved with a bunch of Investigators, exploring abandoned houses, dusty libraries, and creepy tombs, to uncover eldritch lore. She was a racist, like all "good" Lovecraftian protagonists, believing anyone who wasn't a High Elf, a Mountain Dwarf, or a human like her to be degenerate and tainted, the result of miscegenation and poor breeding. So naturally when she discovered that she had snek people in her family tree - and that she was truly a Yuan-ti Pureblood - it drove her insane for a time. Her investigator buddies did what they did to all their friends that cracked: they put her up in an asylum and hoped for the best. That's where Dendar, the Night Serpent, found her, coiling around her dreams. Offering her power, if she'd just go out and foil the plans of other eldritch horrors. Because only Dendar is allowed to destroy the world, at a time and place of its choosing. Sarah's out of hospital now, with a (mostly) intact sanity and the powers of a Great Old One Warlock. She's also less racist, if only because she's had to accept that her prior belief in her blood born superiority was a lie. She's reminded of it every time she uncovers her ankles, to see the scales slowly creeping up her legs (as part of Snek Puberty). Miss Pagecount works with adventurers these days - who hopefully are made of sterner stuff - in the fight against eldritch horrors, knowing full well that the world could end at any time at the fangs of her master. Basically, imagine the protagonist from A Shadow Over Innsmouth, but with Snek People instead of Fish People.

I once played a Yuan-Ti Pureblood monk. His tribe had settled down in a cave filled with stange glowing crystals that had a salty taste to them. Little did they know, these rocks had addictive properties, and over time the entire group stopped caring about their original goals, and really mellowed out as they stayed there. So basically I made a tribe of stoner-snakes, and my character just went around offering a lick of his "special rock" to anyone who'd talk to him. I wish I had more chances to play him.

She had a whole fake character sheet and everyone accepted that she was a human since her scales were explained away by her Draconic bloodline. (Turned out another player in the party was a changeling sorcerer pretending to be a half elf wizard. There was a moment when he couldn't see because it was dark but the yuan ti could but they both had to pretend that wasn't the case so the changeling was like "Worry not human, I shall cast light so you will be able to see!" And she was like "Oh thank you! I REALLY needed that." The DM was the only person who knew both their secrets and he was struggling not to crack up)
