@@keybladegames_real Yeah, ftl at millions of times faster than light, having easily made robots that aren't used as frontline troops or remote controlled and having to physically destroy a planet instead of merely breaking its crust are all super logical. As is using a plasma sword when plasma guns are a dime a dozen.

I think that's a major plus to them. After millennia of most wars being jedi vs. sith, either directly (with the KoToR era wars) or the sith manipulating others, (such as the movies) it's refreshing to see something new and alien to both sides. Really gives you an idea of the scale of the Star Wars universe and the question of what else might be lurking out there, just waiting to be discovered.

Yes! Let's have something different, something new! Something that changes the rules and forces the heroes to adapt. Not the same damn assholes they defeated 20 years ago. The Last Jedi may've fell down on giving the cause of Luke's despair a real weight, making it really seem like something that could break him, but at least it was somewhat new for the characters. As opposed to the cheap "The First Order has conquered the entire galaxy and set up their administration within a few days." stuff so they could rehash Empire. For all his talk of breaking with the past Ben Solo seemed pretty damn close to a Sith apprentice, with the anger issues, megalomania and killing his master thing. I think a major problem with TLJ is that it's trying to have the characters go in a different direction, but the problem they're facing is one that is endemic to the Star Wars galaxy- a big bad Sith empire looking to- what else?- conquer known space! None of the characters seem to acknowledge the absurdity of the situation they're facing; the Empire has come back and they're going through the same rebel policy of running from a discovered base with the Empire hot on their heels. None of the characters pipes up with "This is ridiculous! We defeated these assholes 20 years ago at Jakku! Everybody knows what they stand for- complete totalitarian dictatorship. Much of the populace is old enough to remember the Empire! Why weren't we prepared for this?" Besides some tech upgrades, like tie fighter hyperdrives and shields, the First Order is a mirror image of the Empire, down to the stark white armor. Yet nobody seems to recognize this, it's never brought up, nobody sees how absurd it is that they're facing the same enemy in the same situation as 20 years ago. Where was I?... They could've used the mandalorians, or a new dark side cult, or hell, one of the various reformed sith orders. Something that isn't so damn absurd. What is the point of making a new trilogy if it's just going to be the same heroes and villains? I've heard that Lucas despises the Vong and much of the New Jedi Order's plot points. Which makes me wonder; why the hell did he sign off on the EU in the first place anyway? I doubt he was hurting for money after the original trilogy. Maybe it's my experience with Tolkien's estate milking their properties like crazy, then declaring said dairy machine non canon, but this is ridiculous. Surely the EU writers contacted him with a basic outline of the New Jedi Order and its main villains. If you're going to open your universe to other authors and want creative control, then you should exercise said control. Or just don't do it in the first place if you want it to remain your own. I can see selling an IP when you need cash, but this whole "Yeah, I farmed out the universe to other authors, even though I was doing well and didn't even have them email me an outline of their plots." thing feels so two faced. Did Lucas not realize these authors might make some major changes he didn't like?

@@mattmorehouse9685 The amount that you write makes me wonder, I also write big paragraphs when people respond to me. Most never respond or just mention the amount that I wrote but also quickly move away from it. I'm studying English right now (Writing seems like a fun and illustrious job whether it's for journalism or media stuff, I think George Lucas and SW definitely played a role) so it makes sense that I can write this much and it makes writing college essays a breeze, but other than that there's really no use. But I'm still undecided on my major which sucks and is a big can of worms in itself. But yes, the Sith from KoToR being introduced into the canon for the first time was pretty much the only saving grace for the Disney EU, when looking back and putting it all together. And even then, nobody even cared! Guaranteed less than half the people that went to see the movies in Theaters even knew about KOTOR, and probably even less cared about the stupid rEyLo storyline that (AND I'M GOING TO ADMIT IT BECAUSE EVERYONE IS TOO MUCH OF A SNOWFLAKE) ONLY the stupid tween girls care about! Yes, the younger audiences need to be brought in, but at what cost? I thought they would have looked at the mess George Lucas made hiring child actors in the PT and yet here they go again with the stupid slave child bullshit, fuck man, feels like a sick twisted inside joke, ESPECIALLY when they're LITERALLY using it to appeal to the new "minority"(Black and Mexican) and foreign(Overseas Asian) audience. TLJ(and arguably the entire Sequel Trilogy) was completely destroyed by that Canto Bight scene! From the literal slave child to the terrible CGI The Last Guardian rip off, all made worse by that "cliffhanger" ending! Don't EVEN MENTION the EU, if all they did was briefly tease ANY sort of new storyline from the EU (and I get that Kylo Ren is essentially Ben Solo, an EU character), they could have saved the trilogy. Yuzhan Vong would have been my personal favorite since it's the only part of the EU I knew about (from Ek's videos) but from what I understand in the EU there actually was a big sort of "Empire 2.0/Imperial Fleet 2.0" and maybe they could still make a movie rendition of the Yuzhan Vong, even if it's not called exactly that.

Space magic. Star Wars is full of the stuff, you can't swing a lightsaber without cutting through some honest to the Force space magic. Space too big to make interesting trips? Apply some space magic to your starship's engines and you'll get to the next sector in the span of hours rather than... hundreds of years. People making robots that are super smart in their specialty, and can out perform sapients? Just pour some space magic into the fuel that powers the factory and all their robots will either be human level intelligent in most everything, or dumb as rocks. So you can have actual characters do the exciting fighting and piloting part, instead of security droid 1133766.

They're a great example of an outside context problem; something that is utterly alien to the forces fighting them and almost completely unexpected. Not just their technology and weapons, but also their religion and society. They have no concept of the Force instead having a classical pantheon of gods; indeed they're resistant to most force techniques. I think they're a great way to show that the Star Wars universe is bigger than just the jedi and sith, that there are other forces, other societies that are completely alien and unknown. While the EU may've had some missteps, the Yuuzhan Vong actually make Star Wars feel big, like there are other forces we haven't seen. It gives the universe this sense of wonder to it; if something this strange and alien exists, than what else could be out there?

Personally, my criticism of the Vong is similar to the criticism that many people have of the hyperspace ram from the Last Jedi. They're pretty cool, menacing, and interesting. But, from a thematic perspective, they break the lore. To me, part of the whole point of the original trilogy was that the Rebels were like the Patriots during the American Revolution, and the Original Trilogy a pro-Patriot work. But, by throwing in a huge threat with no prior basis in the lore, that did more damage than the Empire by a few orders of magnitude, and that the Empire would have probably handled better, the New Jedi Order novels basically retcon Star Wars from a pro-Patriot to a pro-Loyalist work, and they do so not by providing an actual in-universe reason, but by using a diabolus ex machina, which is a pretty B.S. way to introduce an opposing view. Plus, compared to the Original Trilogy and the Bantam era, they amped up the stakes Dragon Ball Z style, which I don't think is very good. It's hard to take the destruction of Alderaan or anything else the Empire did seriously anymore after you've seen what the Vong can do, which to me breaks the lore in another way. Dark Empire gets a pass for what it did because it's a comic book series and in comics the "rule of cool" rules, but I have higher standards for novels and movies.

A high powered blast nearby followed by another form of weapons fire would do the trick, as stutter firing was a key form of technology used to destroy their starfighters
