Thank you for bringing these back to life. I was 24 (56 now) at the time this video was taken. We ran a gleaner Cii (c2 with 20 ft header) just like the one in the video and a 1981 gleaner N6 with a 24ft header. Had a green Ford bobtail like your red one and a big dodge tandem bobtail followed by a 1958 international bobtail with no brakes. We harvested our 1000 acres of wheat and custom cut another 1000 acres for some small farmers around us that the big custom cutters would not talk to. Were some fun times but it was hard work and long hours. 1988 was also the year I got to run an old gleaner A combine for a neighbor who had 3. His son got sick, so dad sent me over to help out and run one of his As for a few days. Best cleaning combine I ever ran. He was an old custom cutter and had retired out of Oklahoma to Texas. Told me at one time he ran 14 gleaners A combines (two crews of 7) out on harvest from Oklahoma north to south Dakota. Miss the old days when things were not as complicated and so technical. GPS to us was aim the combine at the post at the other end of the field and try to cut a straight line.

Thanks for the memories. This brings a lot of memories to me. I was born in 1961 and from 60 to March 66, my family owned the grocery store with the house through the screen door in the back of the store in Humphreys Oklahoma in addition to farming and my Dad was a custom hay harvester and custom cotton harvester. He even went to Alice, TX considering a harvest run in cotton, but didn't do it. Each summer and fall, all the Combine Harvesters and the cotton boll pickers and later machinery cotton harvesters were my best friends and I could safely walk the line of grain trucks or pickups pulling trailers of cotton to invite everyone to our store. In 66 we moved to our new house on the farm and as a little kid I always went trucking with the wheat harvest crew all day. In the early 80's we had a wheat harvester, Ben Droste, Lawrence, KS, bring a Massey from their family's farm in Tribune KS and his wife's Uncle's Massey from Cutback, MT picking up George from the Birch Creek Huterite Colony. I remember the day in the early 80s that George cried and cried as he said goodbye to my Dad as he loved my Dad so much. It was Geoge's time to return and marry at the colony. A few years ago, George called here, for the first time since we had talked to him that day on his last harvest before returning to the colony, hoping to talk to my Dad and I sadly had to tell him that he went to Heaven in 2005. George and I have remained great friends and I get calls from the Colony every few weeks. Great memories for my 92 year old Mom and I on our farm here in Southwest Oklahoma. So good to see your generations and the Legacy of all of them continuing on in you and Jim!

OH THE MEMORIES ! When my father moved into a retirement home in town , my wife and I got the chore of going thru the house . My father always kept a daily journal of what we were doing . It is like going back 20-30-40- years . i can sit and read these day after day , back when hard manual labor was the way . Picking ear corn with flare box wagons , then a combine with a 13' head and a two row corn head , shelling ear corn , cobs for the feeder cattle .The memories of way back when .Some people don't realize how agriculture has changed so much in such a short time frame . THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE MEMORIES !

Really interesting video , almost 34 years have passed since those days that's how long we are in what we call "agri hire " here in Tipperary , i think we have a lot in common with the way you describe the highs and the lows of custom harvesting, for us the lows would be waiting on work or money to come in but then there's nothing to beat the feeling of flat out working , getting payment from a happy customer or a new piece of equipment. I honestly don’t know. I would have to ask my dad. In 1988, they cut 2250 acres. The only reason I know this is because dad wrote it on the DVD. If they had gone to Montana, I’m going to guess at least 750-1,000 more acres. Just guessing.

Per Jim - as a matter of fact I did. And I have a little story to add to this. We were moving the combines to a different field and it was a hot, miserable harvest day. Tracy’s dad was ahead of us. I jokingly told Al (Tracy’s grandpa) we should stop and have a beer. Low and behold, he wheeled in and that’s exactly what we did. I don’t think Larry (Tracy’s dad) was very happy with us. Because that’s something you don’t do when there’s wheat to cut!

@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Brodie! In the defense of the combiner…a lot of expenses go into that final price. Hopefully, you understand that. Cost of equipment, fuel, insurance, expenses while living on the road (trailer house and RV space rent), repairs - combine and trucks, tools, etc. The price we charge doesn’t just go in our pocket. And…it frees the farmer from the stress and hassle of harvest and finding people to fill the seats of equipment that are needed for a two-week period.

@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking 2 жыл бұрын
There’s no comparison! The expenses are beginning to overtake the profit. The cost of equipment, fuel and insurance are eating us up. And we’re lucky…we have no hired help expense to add to that. Less and less wheat acres makes finding new jobs so much more difficult than it used to be back then. It’s WAY different than it used to be.

Custom harvesting seems quite easy in those days, just fishing an playing. ;) Jim laughts more in the old videos... The three Masseys look quite impressive in a row! Do you know what these metal bows on the header dividers were for?
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking 2 жыл бұрын
Per Jim - they were there to divide the crop into the sickle or the crop rather than pushing the crop down.

From experience that bow pushes the crop under the divider if it is not on the crop slides up the divider and piles up and sits there

Jim says they grew damn good wheat in Dacoma. He’s guessing 50-60 bushel wheat wouldn’t be out of the question for Dacoma. Less yields in the Timken area. Lodgepole had good wheat.

Excellent video! Lots of memories of harvest past. Did Jim make more clear money with the 850 Massey than the big New Holland?
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking Жыл бұрын
Good question! It seems pretty proportional. We cut 50/60 acres a day with the Massey compared to 100/150 with the NH. Combine prices might have been eight times as high with the New Holland but cutting twice as much and the cost of cutting for the farmer has tripled. So, who knows. Can’t say I remember any one time the net profit was way off the chart over any other year. There were way more wheat acres available to cut in the Massey days! And that the biggest difference. Less farmer-owned combines. Hired help was easier to find. Less government regulations. More custom harvesters on the road.

@@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking Thanks! Good , complete answers. I miss those days when the 850 and 860 combines ruled the harvest. Parts were cheaper, fuel cheaper, tandem axle straight trucks instead of semis, good help avail to hire, even restaurant daily noon specials were cheap. Friendly service. Lots of times the owner/cook would come out and visit across the counter. Always money left to leave a tip. I had two MF 410's and thought I really could harvest some grain. Never was in the custom league as you folks were. Always wanted to go on the road, but other things got in the way.

It was dry here in southern Alberta from 1983 till 1993 with 1985 being the worst till fall came it snowed the first week of September and rained every week after that all the crops that were harvested were irrigation and the grain was all tough. In 1986 I was cutting a 6 bushel wheat crop for a neighbor the last part of August and it rained till October the 6 bushel crop disappeared in Russian thistles the irrigation crop was swathed and all green on top and had some roots in the ground and muddy and everybody’s was ready to combine at the same time my nerves haven’t been the same since but we got it all done.
