I know people always say this, but it makes a big difference being able to see myself while I record. Seeing facial reactions and feeling like you are talking to someone is a lot easier (and yields more natural reaction) than when you are forcing yourself to smile and laugh and stare into a lens.

My sister is a celiac and so she can't eat bread. I was explaining this to a Japanese person and they gasped and said, "but then what does she eat?" I explained that she eats a variety of things including white rice, rice pasta, etc. They looked at me and exclaimed, "It must be so HARD for you to import rice to Canada!". Their image of North America = Bread.

There are many reasons that someone can get deported, mostly for breaking the law, working without a permit, over-staying on your visa, and stuff like that. If you follow the rules and do everything the way you're supposed to, then it's very rare for there to be any problems.

I don't know. That's a tough question, I never really considered myself fluent, it's always just a matter of learning how to say the things I want to say. There are still a lot of things I can't express in fluent Japanese. (Even subbing this video took like 3 hours because I didn't know a lot of Japanese terms for immigration related things.) I've been here for 7 years though. Could barely speak when I arrived.

Yep. Switched wallets and forgot to put it in, and happened to get stopped by police on a Saturday when I was just running out to teach a one hour class in the morning. I didn't bring anything with me because I was going to be in-and-out. They took me to the station and called my employer to confirm my identity. It was awful. It was like they didn't believe me.

I can totally relate to despair and kind of depressive you put yourself in everytime you have to renew your visa. Renewed mine for the very first time last September and the whole waiting was pretty much a psychological thriller to me. My mood changed and I was already preparing myself to go back to Brazil. Fortunately, I renewed it and got a 3 year long visa this time. Only need to worry about this rather scary process again in 2015 haha.

Well, those aren't the only options. :) Since I graduated from senmongakkou with a diploma and certification, I can get a "shusshoku katsudo" visa as long as I prove that I'm legitimately LOOKING for work, too. It's only valid for 6 months or something though. There's also self-sponsorship, but I don't think I can afford that...

Japanese citizenship takes YEARS unless you get married. (I've been here for 7 and a lawyer told me I need 5 years of school and 5 years of work before I can even think of applying.) Unless you look Japanese, it's very unlikely that you'll ever be considered a normal Japanese person. I think that only normal Japanese people can be considered normal Japanese people.
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 12 жыл бұрын
You should apply if you're staying longer than 30 days, and you should apply soon! The change doesn't take place until July 12th? I think? so until then the Alien Registration System is still in place.
@Ciaela
@Ciaela 12 жыл бұрын
"The system will issue qualifying foreign nationals a resident card containing a portrait photo of the individual, basic personal information such as his/her name, his/her resident status and his/her currently allowed period of stay." So basically you get a NEW card, with the same info, but it has a different name. XD

Heh, I understand what you mean about the Japanese not being accustomed to dealing with foreigners. Part of the reason why I'm in Sweden now (half-Swedish, born and raised in Australia) is because I disliked being treated as a second-class citizen/human being in Japan. I think that a lot of Japanese watching this video might not appreciate being mentioned in the way they are in this video, but it is important to be honest and frank about these issues as the Japanese turn a blind eye to them.

Sorry to hear that and i think for me i have only been to Japan for exchange for 3 months in Miyazaki Prefecture. But now this information that you have provided for me is pretty interesting and quite shocking that the term "alien" is a little bit awkward and a tad weird. If they said "foreigner" that's alot better. But i do know of what the term the Japanese use "Gaijun" ? I hope you get your desired documents and needs fulfilled for your immigration. Good luck and take care Ciaela!

I once got that «Do they eat rice in [your home country]?» question, too. Rather than being annoying, I believe that shows just how relevant kome/gohan is to the locals. But that's the sociologist in me speaking; my real self thinks they should take it for granted that rice is consumed outside Southeast Asia -- although I don't quite agree with this analysis either. Methinks carbohydrates are to blame.
