Okay, I see it. In my early 20s I had some pretty fast cars, and I went up against the police a lot back then. But the one lesson that I took away from everything that happened to me back then was this, it doesn’t matter how fast your car is, you can’t beat the radio.

I was on my Turbo Hayabusa once, is was just getting dark. I was on a road that turns into a 55 mph highway I always sped on. Needless to say I was over 180 mph in no time, and I see lights go on in a cutout on the right hand side. Tucked, I looked in my mirror expecting him to pull out and chase, but a couple seconds later, they went out. Idk if he said “fuck that, I’m not catching him” or he was just warning me, but I fully expected more to be radioed in. None were, I slowed to 54 mph and went right home. I’d like to think he really did think “fuck I’m not catching that” lol, but he prolly wanted to go home lol

One officer told me they may drag around something close to an extra half-ton over a civilian model. Even if that estimate is closer to a quarter-ton, that's still pretty respectable, considering. According to him , and several officers I met while towing wrecks, they would have a better time getting up to speed in a yeoman's ride.

That was a run for fun. 121 mph trap speed? He'll give him his ticket at the top of the hill - lol. I've driven a few quarter miles at Bandimere speedway. Love it.

The Cop gets cool points for being human, turning up at the track and racking the Vette. That was neat. That police Ford Explorer hit 90mph in the 1/4 at 15.8 not too shabby for an SUV loaded with equipment. That's why they have Motorola and Choppers.

Bandimere Speedway a.k.a. Thunder Mountain. I got to see the races there on the NHRA 50th anniversary. Pit pass for all 4 days. John Force came out of the gift shop with 2 big dudes carrying large boxes full of commemorative hats that he was autographing and giving to all the fans (mostly kids). Super good ambassador for the sport of drag racing.

Interesting twist of the old Ford vs Chevy. The Sheriff hitting the lights and siren was a nice touch! 👍

To be fair that was probably the 3.3 Hybrid Police Interceptor Utility / Explorer. The Explorer with the 3.0 EcoBoost and a tune can run high 11s without hardware mods.

The cop said okay you can outrun my cruiser, but you can't outrun my radio lol. The drag strip is the only place you can go full throttle with a cop in your rear view mirror and not get a ticket.

I'll say this , I've seen a whole lot of Vettes on the rollback splintered all to hell ! From C6---C8 even the base models are fast. Cops are trained to drive fast. Plus they got that damn radio..... Not impossible to beat but dam hard.

Cop cars haven’t been “Modified” to outrun cars since the 1920s to catch the bootleggers. It always amazes me how many people believe that cop cars are fast. Even cops think it. I remember talking to a local officer who drove a K-9 unit SUV that was this exact same model and he thought it was the fastest shit on the road 😑

One of my co-workers in HS took some officers on a long motorcycle chase. He taught me a valuable lesson that's been shared here many times already: you're never going to outrun the radio.

I was a street cop for 30 yrs. I was once knocking at the door of a house to investigate a burglary when a black Trans-Am spun his tires at the end of block and sped passed me. I knew I wouldn’t catch up to him and I didn’t really even care that he spun his tires, BUT, I couldn’t resist a once in a career chance and I jumped at it. I got into my squad and turned on my lights and siren as I turned in his direction. I told dispatch, “Squad …, I’m in pursuit of a black Trans-Am” in my best Buford T. Justice voice. After a block I shut down and went back to my report call with a big smile on my face.

The cruiser had three handcuffed arrestees in the back seat at the time of the race. That is to funny, because a street is not a straight line and just dash cam will give the cruiser enough to meet them at their home later. No comparison what so ever.

Sheriff did ok for having to wait for the call to come in from dispatch before launching.

From a former CHP: "Don't ever stop for a parked cruiser on a highway no matter the vehicle you are in. We can't catch a Prius doing 75mph from a stand still for at least 4 miles. See the lights, floor it for 1-2 exits and get off. If they are working in tandem and a 2nd unit is ahead, stop! They have you. Unless you are in a high performance car or motorcycle and want to risk major consequences. Otherwise, feign ignorance, you didn't see the first cop and accept your speeding ticket."

All officers admit the SUV has slow acceleration and gains speed once it gets going. This was never going to be a race. A police mustang or interceptor would be cool to see

It's never been about the vehicle with the police, it's them radios you have to worry about. Now put a communications jammer on that vette, then he may have a chance, slim to none still, but a chance.

We don't have police helicopters in my area, and I've outrun the law a couple times on pure luck. Both at night when zero cars were on the highway and I was already cruising at 140. By the time the cop pulled out and put his lights and sirens on he was a spec of red and blue in the rear view. Plus multiple turn offs might have done it too as there's three ways to go and he probably chose the wrong road or discontinued pursuit. Both on the same road and same circumstances. I've grown up since then and only drive like a maniac in time attack events.
