Lovn this z80 Playground series - your explaining everything really well. Cant wait to get one when your ready to supply and play/learn. The breadboard ready design is great.

Interesting note on flow control with the 16C550 chips. I was just going through a parts box the other day and stumbled upon some I bought for a project a while back. Definitely have to look up the schematic and sort the parts into a new project box!
@CircuitBreaker2563 жыл бұрын
The situation is this: On some, if you set the flow control settings, then read them back, they have been set, and work. On others if you set them and read them back, one of the bits has not been set, and it doesn't ever do hardware flowcontrol.

I put an auto watch on your eBay account when I first saw this last year. I got an email from eBay today (07March21) showing me you had a new listing. 2 minutes later I had one on order. Looking forward to having a play with this - great work.

I've just been testing my new board & am very impressed. Although I've not spent that long with it I did come across an unusual bug. In the main menu if I run the "Life Game" then exit - every time I hit c for C/PM it takes me into Tiny Basic until I completely repower the board (Reset doesn't do the trick)!! As you've admitted you will surely find a few more bugs - but keep up the great work and I look forward to your next video.
@CircuitBreaker2563 жыл бұрын
@@slm60uk Fantastic that you've got your board already! Interesting bug you've got there. I'll take a look. I only just added those two extra menu items (Tiny basic & Game of life) so I may have made a mistake there.

You could use Arduino Nano to eliminate the ROM and UART - on reset have the Arduino copy ROM to RAM and then have it work as the UART
@CircuitBreaker2563 жыл бұрын
I did that in a previous version of this project, and it was actually a pain and not as fast as real ROM and a UART. I have a baud rate of 460,800 with this UART, which I think is pretty speedy, and the ROM is as fast as the CPU. I have to say that using the real components is a lot simpler and more reliable. Plus a bit more "retro"!

Are playgrounds still available? I can't find your ebay anymore, and even your 8bitstack website seems to be no longer operational.. Even if just the gerber was available I'd be happy to cobble the rest together if that's the only option...

Sadly I haven't had much of a chance to play with my Z80 Playground. I'd love to see a traditional Z80 Monitor/Disassembler and Assembler like Hisoft's Devpac on the Sinclair Spectrum at some point.
@CircuitBreaker2563 жыл бұрын
I think you are right. It is surprising that there isn't an editor that easily allows you to edit, assemble and run a Z80 program. Or if there is, I haven't heard of it. Something like Turbo Pascal but assembler-based. Maybe I should write one. It's also a real shame that there is no "C" equivalent of Turbo Pascal, which I think would be the best possible programming environment.

Is it possible to single step on this board, or implement some kind of single step?
@CircuitBreaker2563 жыл бұрын
I have done that under CP/M with ZSID. It's software single-step, not hardware single step though. TBH I always find single-step more useful in theory than in practise though. My approach is usually to put in a ton of debugging messages that appear on screen.
