This project is a multi-purpose Single Board Computer computer based around the Z80, a popular 1980s CPU. It runs CP/M. This is part 1 where I go over the design and the making of the PCB.

That chip is a Zee-80. The computer a lot of people know it from is the Sinclair Zed-X series. That's just how these things work. Excited for this series on a very cool project! I'm a 6502 man myself, but it's good to branch out.

When getting PCBs made abroad, do you end up paying import duty? And if you do pay duty, is it still cost effective? What other PCB manufacturers have you tried?

I've only ever used JLCPCB. I have never paid any import duty. I think the duty is already paid at their end, but I may be wrong on that. It cost almost nothing to get 5 PCBs made, but usually I only want 1. I use the "GB Special Air Mail Royal Mail" option for postage. It takes about 2 weeks from uploading the Gerber to receiving the PCBs. They are always excellent. I have never ordered one larger than 100mm x 100mm, which means my orders go through really quick and cheap. If I upload the files in the evening, by next morning when I check the progress they are already in production!

I never paid duty with JLPCB but I once got one from PCBWay and had to pay "huge" import duties on it. Has anyone ever used any of the UK manufacturers? Compared to the Chinese, the prices are astronomical.

Well, I was aiming for a Jupiter Ace work-alike first. But yes, a video card has to be next!

@ On the v1.2 board it uses Serial output, so you need to connect to a PC and use a terminal emulation program like TeraTerm.

@ You also have the option for parallel output through the 36 way connector, which is basically the Z80 address bus, data bus etc. See the v1.2 board video for details.
