Fun Fact about the Borchardt: Borchardt himself thought his design was perfect and the best thing before sliced bread, and absolutely refused to change his design when DWM asked him to. They fired him, and his assistant Georg Luger made the requested improvements. That became the Luger Parabellum

He just said it was fine he didn’t say all of that. He did this because he wanted to go work on electronics again. And he found gun design pretty boring. That’s why he didn’t make a single other gun design. If he thought he was such a good gun designer he would’ve done another one but he didn’t.

Ill add some other interesting notes about the borchardt as I actually own one of the things. The full auto conversion may seem goofy, but it is allegedly real. One was supposedly made to test reliability. The borchardt isn't nearly as uncomfortable as it seems, but you definitely wouldn't want to hold it sideways. It's well balanced vertically, but horribly back heavy sideways. The borchardt is an entirely different beast with a shoulder stock. The first time I shouldered that thing it felt like I found a piece of my body that was missing. Not only is the trigger guard asymmetrical but the trigger itself is shifted all the way to the left as well. The grip is not completely vertical, it is slightly angled.

The po8 firing mechanism was so iconic that Luger made the Selbstlader 1906, which used an improved toggle lock firing mechanism and fired the 7.92x57mm rifle cartridge. Only one of the few prototypes still exists today.

22:24 Cool fact zach, the laser garands sticky note is a reference to the AER-14 prototype which can be found inside of vault 22 in Fallout: New Vegas, the weapon has a note from the scientist who supposedly created it talking about the same things, aswell as the time 8:18 pm on the sticky note. Love your videos as always!

@@Yabadabadoooo2 It's less the game itself, more the community that's formed around it. For some reason, NV has become a staple game of the transfem community, at least the parts I interact with. "Heat from fire, fire from heat" is a voice training exercise used by a lot of the same transfems, hence the connection. Hope that helped!!! :3

The pistol without the mechanical trigger has certain design cues that shows it's either an optical or electrical sensor, which while there is no real reason to actually do that its a fun idea for a science fiction weapon

37:01 the USP and MK23 were actually kinda developed alongside each other, with the USP development and the OHWS programs both beginning in 1989. The lessons HK learned from the OHWS program and testing helped them improve the USP, I think it's accurate to think of them as brothers. Also, the Misriah sticker is referencing Halo, Misriah Armory makes the M6S SOCOM Magnum from Halo ODST (as well as pretty much all of the other human weapons, like seriously), which takes a lot of visual cues from the fully kitted out MK 23, with a LAM and a big boi suppressor. Also, technically the ODSTs use it as an offensive hand gun, though they still carry a primary weapon like the suppressed SMG, assault rifle or sniper rifle. Part of me wonders how much use they actually saw, given that it was made just as the cold war was cooling down. Unfortunately, given it's the size of a mailbox without the can on, by all accounts they stayed in the armory over Glocks, Sigs or the USP, which later got a .45 variant. I love the MK23 a lot, it's just such an overbuilt and amazing pistol with a niche purpose. Reminds me of the Hunter S. Thompson line "There he goes, one of God's own prototypes. A high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, too rare to die."

39:06 As a FYI the Misriah sticker is a sticker of the logo for the Misriah manufacturer in the Halo universe. They are pretty much responsible for all the UNSC hardware from MA5D Assault Rifles, to M392 Designated Marksman Rifles, even to the Warhog and Pelican drop ship. Just an FYI.

The Manhurin sniper configuration was the response to the CT Groups' need for a precision weapon that could operate easily in the limiting, claustrophobic environment that is the French Metropolitan Areas. Tight streets surrounded by tall buildings made it difficult to use precision rifles, so the Manhurin was the perfect little oddity for the job.

There's actually quite a few guns which can claim to have won 2 world wars. The Nagants, for example. Both the rifle and the revolver saw heavy service in both wars. Also the Carcano, in the hands of the Italians when they were part of the Entente in WW1, and in the hands of partisans in WW2. Then you've got all the small eastern European countries which just straight up ripped the Mauser design. Possibly the only gun copied more than the Mauser 1898 pattern was the Charleville musket. Even today, if you walk into a gun store, half the bolt action rifles there will likely be Mauser actions. The 1911 was a good gun, but the only people who copied it were John Browning himself with the Browning Hi Power and the Chinese, but they copy everything so that doesn't mean much

Fun fact! That lee Enfield mod you had does actually have an add-on that corrects the reload count. The problem is it needs an external framework, so it has to be downloaded separately.

The lee enfield came around after the boer war in the late 1800s. The ones the Canadian rangers were using was called the l8a1 which was in 7.62 nato. I wish they were easier to find in the US but it's a hot market for them because 303 is difficult to find. But there were many variants, the first production ones had the magazine cutoff in the reciever. The jungle carbine was made in the late 40s for jungle warfare in Burma. There was also a suppressed version called the De lisle carbine. They're neat, I've owned a few from different eras and they're actions are some of the smoothest.

Rangers were still in .303 until they switched to Colt Canada C19s in .308 in 2015, and they really only switched because no one makes SMLE parts anymore.

The "Jungle Carbine" wasn't actually _made_ for jungle warfare, that's a common misconception, it _was_ designed based on lessons learned during the Burma campaign, but the SMLE No5 was fully intended to replace the Number 4. Starting with Paratrooper units in around 1945 I believe. The process of adopting the Number 5 was halted when the L1A1 was introduced as the new standard issue rifle in the Commonwealth armies in the 50s. The resulting low production numbers and relative scarcity of genuine Number 5s in circulation today has lead to a false perception that these were somehow "specialist" rifles deigned for paratroopers and jungle warfare, this is just straight up false, the Number 5 was always meant from the beginning to be a standard issue rifle to replace(or more accurately; supplement) the Number 4 Mk 1. It was designed to be a rifle that _could_ operate well in jungles, but that doesn't mean they meant for it to be a 'jungle warfare' rifle... As if such a concept even existed in real life. Also, as Joshua said, the Rangers still used the .303(Number 4 Mk 1) SMLEs until they adopted the C19 in 2015-2018. The L8A1 was actually a _British_ rifle(if it was a Canadian rifle, it would have been called the C8A1) - the L8A1 was used by the British Army as a marksman rifle, intended to replace the No4Mk1(T) .303 sniper rifles they had used up until the L8's introduction, I believe most of them were converted from WW2 rifles, and they remained the standard British sniper rifle until the L96/L115 replaced it in the early-late 80s.

So awesome that you got to rant about the Lee Enfield! I personally own one and it’s my favorite bolt action of all time. You got the history spot on, the model you guys had in the game was the No.4 Mk I which is the same as what I have. It was introduced in 1941. The other model that most people think of when they think of Lee Enfields is the SMLE which was retroactively renamed to the No.1 Mk III.

DegenerateDak on KZfaq made the M2 shoulder gun and he explained that his vision for the mod was that it wasn’t meant to be used by standard infantry but mechanized power infantry. That’s why everything is oversized especially the trigger guard. It’s a stop-gap from the tail end of the resource wars where the US military was using everything it could and adapting M2s to fire from the shoulder of power armor troops is cheaper than building or buying more mini guns and Gatling lasers and certainly cheaper than plasma casters

I love stuff that plays around with the expectations of weapons in a sci-fi setting like this. I always imagined that the reason Desert Eagles are common in Fallout 2 is because they feel a lot less like overkill when you're potentially fighting super mutants or giant radscorpions. Likewise, the Survivalist's (pre-war) rifle in New Vegas is chambered in 12.7mm rounds, which I imagine is because he was potentially having to use it against soldiers in power armour.

39:37 Misriah Armory, the Mars based weapons manufacturer who makes... nearly all the weapons used by UNSC forces up until Infinite. Being responsible the M6 Series Magnum handguns, the MA5 series Assault Rifles, the BR55 series Battle Rifles, the M39 series DMR's, and the SRS99D-S2-AM Sniper rifles. They also manufactured pretty much all of the UNSC's aerial assault vehicles. Broadswords, Shortswords, Longswords, Sabres, Pelicans, Condors, Falcons, Hornets, and Wasps. Meat is... sort of a mascot for... Binyot, or Vinny Vinesauce.

Well done Zack, that is indeed a Mark 4 Lee Enfield. specifically the Mark 4 No 1, which has been around since the 1930s and was officially adopted in 1941. The Lee Enfield series has been around since 1895 with the SMLE variant being around since WW1, which is probably what you where thinking of. it's my favourite bolt action.

Other way around. About the time of the No. 4 being introduced, they re-kajiggered the designation system. From the WW1 era Mark designation to a No Z Mk Y designation. Very confusing eh?

To add on to the Lee-Enfield, the Canadian rangers stopped using them in 2017, however when my unit went to Northern Ontario for a winter exercise in 2021 with the Canadian rangers, we brought our Lee-enfields with us as a predatory watch weapon along with Remington 870’s. Our rifles got retired a couple months ago while we wait for the new tikka’s.

I reload for 30-06, using 168grain bullets my loads are right about 57 grains of powder (depending on type of powder)

I'm pretty sure the idea behind the shoulder fired M2 is that it's meant to be used in power armor, hence the massive trigger and guard and lack of a concern for weight. Everything else still stands though

Similarly, the original Fallout 4 "Assault Rifle" comes from a point in development where they were contemplating having certain weapons be Power Armor only, and that was intended to be the equivalent of an assault rifle for PA infantry, which is why it resembles an LMG. A big thing in the Fallout universe is having PA weaponry be one 'tier' heavier than regular infantry guns.

@19:00 I could very well be wrong, but I believe the enlarged section at the end of the barrel is a legacy of the fact the M2 was developed from a water cooled gun, the M1921. The M2 was developed from a version designed with a universal reciever, to simplify production it allowed light barrel aircraft, heavy barrel air-cooled vehicle mount versions, and the water cooled ground mount version to all be made from on the same common reciever. That swell at the end would be the bearing surface on the inside of the water jacket. The water cooled version was ditched for being to heavy, and the aircraft version evolved into its own thing, but that barrel profile stayed, probably because it ended up being used for blank firing adapters. Also, a shoulder fired version of the M2 was made during WW2 as a prototype antitank weapon, but it was a bullpup arrangement where the bulk of the reciever was behind the shoulder and the whole thing was held like a bazooka. It wasn't practical but apparently it did work. Also a different development was essentially a stock kit and short bipod to turn one into a huge 1919A6 style Heavy GPMG.

I have that exact same Lee Enfield mod, and lemme just say it's one of my absolute favorites! There's another mod that gets rid of the Laranjo stuff (apparently it's a Brazilian meme) and adds other ludicrous stuff like a spear length barrel. I'm using exclusively Allied (mostly US) guns for my current run, and the Lee Enfield is my sniper rifle. Thompson is my main, 1911 is my sidearm, and I carry a set of binocs for calling in artillery strikes (which is so fucking awesome!).

Something that is interesting about the Lee Enfield with the short-barrel, that was an actual modification made by troops during World War 1. I believe instead of being called an obrez, it was called the Trench Raider modification, where troops would saw the stock and barrel down and use it in the trench tunnels.

Listening to Zach talk about the Lee Enfield and its sights makes me wonder if he's heard of Japan's Type 99 and its plane shooting sights. The Type 99 had the flip ranging sights but attached to that was a little horizontal bar that could let you approximate the speed of aircraft, I guess it worked pretty well in the Sino-Japanese wars.

If you want a perfect example of Lee enfield reloading in a game, the Long Dark does it super well where it takes into account how much ammo is already in the magazine. So it goes from loading in whole clips to individual rounds to make up the difference.

So, the sniper revolver makes sense since, they (GIGN) didn't always the choice of where to set up your shooting position, and sometimes you're in something barely bigger than a locker and it's far easier on the elbow room than a regular sniper rifle. Also, they paired the operative with the revolver with another buddy with a MP5 or P90.

fun fact. the lurker auto pistol was a real gun, it was manufactured in Italy as an automatic handgun named the Lercker pistol and it was designed and meant for sale in italy but after only 150 handguns being made, the guns were banned by the italian government. it was chambered in the absolutely tiny 6.35 auto

As someone who lives a few miles from CZ-USA and who’s EDC is a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, I’d like to thank you for recognizing the good CZ has been doing in the gun world. After buying my first CZ, a 2075 Rami, I’ve yet to find anything else that compares to them. That Lee-Enfield is Rifle No. 4, the No. 5 has a short barrel, cut down forestock, and flash hider. Also, that 2-stage sight was a new innovation for the No. 4, previous iterations had more traditional ramp sights like you'd see on any other rifle of the time period. This was around the time the M1 Garand did more or less the same idea. Also, the Mark 23 costs about $2200-2500, I'm in a very similar position with trying to get one

Fun fact, the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) came up with a few ingenious ideas at Gallipoli involving the Lee Enfield rifle. One was the rifle with a trench periscope fitted allowing soldiers to aim and fire their rifles whilst keeping themselves safely in the cover of the trenches. Another invention was the drip or "pop off rifle" that utilised a weight system that allowed the rifle to fire without needing someone to pull the trigger, the ANZACs used these during the evacuation of Gallipoli as a means of tricking the Turks into thinking the trenches were stilled manned, while entire trenches were abandoned with nothing but these self-firing rifles popping off sporadically
