This cursed parts organizer lurked in the background - until today. My electronic component hoarding has reached apocalyptic levels. Order must be restored to Voidstar Lab.
Join me as I reorganize my trash-tier Harbor Freight parts organizers into glorious 3D-printed, laser-cut pantheons of paraphernalia. It's part workshop cleanup, part project log, and part confessional.

This gives me a few ideas. I think rainbow filament would be excellent for any project consisting of many otherwise identical or quite similar objects, each of which can be printed in serial.

What's interesting is that the rainbow effect could actually serve a secondary purpose of making misordered drawers more evident. You don't have to remember every single item and where it went precisely in the storage unit, you just have to notice that some of these shades don't look like they're in a smooth gradient.

@@ZackFreedman And because of the way that the labels are attached, it looks like it wouldn't be too much trouble to swap them if you decide to rearrange. I'm personally about to get a laser cutter/engraver attachment for my Ender 3 and the first projects I have in mind are all related to organizing my tools. The laser cutter should make short work of foam to give myself a nice foamy protector for my sockets and tools of the like that can be easily recreated when they get damaged.

If you get a picture with a ruler in it, you can calibrate the size, and create some slight overhangs to clip in. :)

Came to this video 2 years late while searching for general organization stuff. I don’t have the same cabinets, I don’t have a 3d printer, and my parts collection is very specific to audio circuits and all of that said I really enjoyed this video! I completely agree with you about how the time to search for components doesn’t “feel” like its part of the actual project and it’s gotten me on a nice train of thought for my organizational needs. I thought that looked awesome in the background of another video and looked for this video. Love it! Totally worth it. I'm just a beginner with 3D printing. Got a deal on color changing silk filament and am hooked on having the color flow through a project. It takes a lot more thought and planning than just using a single color, but that's what makes it.

I am enjoying your videos. I just watched the circuit board video, and followed up with this one. I like the combo of craft process and history. I tend to like content that is educational but in a fun way, and your content definitely fits. I wouldn't mind knowing more about technical specifics with your prints and other techniques, bordering on tutorial, but not necessarily to that degree. Anyhow, I'll keep tuning in and I look forward to seeing how your channel develops.

I am very glad that you shared this project. I noticed your cabinet in another video and went looking for this video, so glad it exists! The cabinet looks great in the background of your videos. In a practical use sense, the large labels that are press-fit are great. I like that you kept what worked for you on the original cabinet and didn't just throw it all away. Also, numbering the back of the drawer fronts was definitely a big-brain move. I've been in that situation of trying to figure out the order of things later. Not a fun time.

@@ZackFreedman you should try buying reels and leaving them on the reel. Only cut the tape as you use the component. Should be able to find reels even for non SMD components

pretty funny about naming the chips. True story, when I was 18 I was a Radio Shack store manager (CB boom, I'm old!). A year later I realized how many SKUs I had memorized for all the common stuff we sold, such as audio cables were 12-xxxx, etc. I could name quite a few full SKUs when customers would come in for something!

I agree with you, the long print time is well worth it for the aesthetics of the units on the wall. I have the same units and am thinking I need to get the rainbow filament and print some out.

Maybe you’ll dream up a really nice sort of neopixel installation, that would very nicely augment your organizer project! Really good idea to use the video as a sort of project journal, where you could not only use the video to reveal this projects timeline, but then to have it serve as a master record later for not only yourself, but the rest of the World through its Wide Web. I could even feel the sort of eureka moments that you must have experienced as you came up with the friction fits and all the more subtle mechanical details that made it yours. Those drawers are super schnazzy! THANKS FOR SHARING!!

Out credits have me LOL-ing. I once took a test for an EE job where I was asked to build a small memory bus or something using "this list of 74xx ICs". No data sheets. No descriptions of each. This was in the days before cell-phones and google in yer pocket. I scrawled out a logic diagram and hoped they were into partial credit. They hired me anyway. Years later I remarked how unrealistic I thought it was to expect someone to have committed any of that to memory. Lead inganeer shook his head and muttered something about kids these days.. That cat really did know dozens of those P/Ns by heart.
