Does anyone else think that the current protests in Israel is sort of about these new geopolitical alignments? I think the elites must know something really bad is coming so they want to have as much control of the courts to pass martial laws. Netanyahu is a war time leader, not peace time. I would like to hear other opinions on this.

No I don’t think so. From all the articles I have read state the judicial overhaul bill passed by Netanyahu was created by him to future corruption charges he might be indicted for. I think if Netanyahu knew about future of region he would Allie Israel with Arab nations to stop Turkiye controlling the region instead of causing unrest in Israel.

Since you are in the country, and your mind might be there already, I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about New Zealand, AUKUS tier 2, the strong trade ties with China, and lack of FTA with the USA, the defense forces focus on disaster relief / lack of military power [although the NZSAS are pretty badass] vs the country's geographic isolation, and any missed opportunities that country could be focusing on? PS: be a little careful. I'm aware that you spent a lot of time here when you were younger and so understand what tends to offend us, and you saw what happened to Posie Parker this week when she tried to do just that :p

I don't see Bulgaria ever ditching NATO in favour of a Turkish defense alliance of some sort. Why? First of all, we have the US on our side if anything happens, and second, Bulgarians generally don't view Turkey favourably due to the near 500-year-long Ottoman occupation of Bulgaria. There are Bulgarians that view Russia favourably and would much rather be allied with Russia than with anyone else, but they are a loud minority. Bulgarian politics is rather simple: politicians are in it to steal money and any rational politician knows that the West (the EU to be more exact) has more money to be stolen from, compared to Russia, to Turkey, to anyone, so they ain't lettin' the Golden Goose get away from them by shifting the country's geopolitical allegiance.

I actually think Peter is holding to his "Russia's war to lose" assessment until the Ukes put together the several combat battalions they intend to launch in their counter offensive this summer. If the Ukes punch through and make it to the Azov Sea, then his opinion will change as to who’s likely to win. If the Ukes fail to break out then he'll conclude that Russia will be able to hold the territory it currently controls indefinitely. Everything depends on whether western armaments will truly have a great effect in this new type of war and if the Ukes can execute a combined arms attack.

Yes but what are the facts on the ground in relation to their conquest of Ukraine? Despite their idiotic way of managing their invasion, Russia is still in Ukraine. As Zeihan has said the Russians will throw millions into the grinder so that Ukraine will be strained to train enough troops to fight to replace the dead. You can't fall into the trap of thinking Russian incompetence means the war is over. The Taliban kept the Russians and Americans at bay for decades and Russia has far more to lose than Afghanistan did in geopolitical and economic terms. The Russians are definitely hurting but they aren't done. Also even if Ukraine did push Russia back into Russia, do you actually believe the Russians will stop and say"Oh we're back in our territory guess we lost". They'll regroup and invade again and again and again. You would have to take the war into Russia and of course escalate matters. Short of sending in NATO troops, the Russians will stay entrenched in Ukraine for decades if they are allowed. The war has just gotten started and there's a reason Poland is readying for a fight not out of precaution but out of experience because they know the Russians have a good chance of wearing down the Ukrainians and gunning after them as well. I think it be best you get off the kumbaya train and see that this war is not as over and done as many people like yourself imagine it to be. Russia is going to pick off as many countries as it can and in my opinion Poland is on that list. I think Russia is stupid enough to attack NATO Poland and Poland seems to think so too. Russia isn't afraid of taking us down with them and people tend to forget that little fact.

Turkey is a *MUSLIM* country. They do not weight their strategic interests as we others do. Large parts of inner-Asia speaks a Turkish dialect. They primarily wants to spread Turkish flavored Islam. The Kingdom was never intended to be an earthly one. The expectations and desire for recognizably imperial trappings have been with us since the dying embers of Ancient Rome hijacked Jesus in order to reinvigorate itself.
