Ciao guys! In today's video I'll share a video review of the fantastic Zeiss Distagon 21mm F2.8 ZE/ZF that I love to use with my mirrorless cameras (Lumix S1/S5, Sony A7IV) and some run and gun cinema cameras like the Pocket 6k, Red Komodo and Sony FX6.
In my opinion this is the most cinematic ultra wide angle lens you can find in the used market! It has a beautiful rendering of the images, with a very smooth bokeh and lovely ultra wide prospective. This lens can be considered as a vintage lens, because zeiss, sadly, doesn't produce the classic lineup anymore. But they are still producing it in the Milvus lineup, in case you need to buy it with the weather sealing protection.

This is a VERY special lens to me that I actually never owned. I was a die hard Canon shooter and ONLY had Canon glass. In late 2013 I borrowed this lens from a buddy. I was DEEPLY impressed with the results SO much I came home and turned in my 50mm 1.2 85mm 1.2 and bought Distagon but I did the 18mm since my buddy already had the 21. So this lens set the standard, next Christmas will mark 10 years with a nice line of Distagons over straight up Canon lenses.

I have the same Zeiss ZF set, except of the 85 mm. And I am very satisfied with all of them. The 21 mm is fantastic, I can recommend.

It looks very good Luca. My first ever Zeiss Classic lens, gets delivered today. I bought the 50mm f/1.4 to start with. It'll be coupled with the FTZ adapter for the Nikon Zf. My Zf is taking a little while to come, because I ordered a special colour. My next purchase, give or take a couple of months, will be a combined Zeiss Classic set. I'll pick-up the 80mm f/1.4, with the 18mm f/3.5. The 18mm is getting very expensive, here in Belgium, it is already more 1200€, which is remarkable that these older (new) lenses have retained their value sooooo well. Wow! I am amazed by that. I can't wait to feel the 50mm, when it comes. That must be an experience indeed.

Have this lens and love it, but as you mention sometimes I find it hard to know when to use it. It can be too stylised a look for your average low budget commercial/promo shoot when on a full frame camera. The footage looks lovely though.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this lens. I have it as part of my Zeiss Classic set, and while everything you’ve said here is true, Luca, I’ve also found the lens to be quite physically demanding to use. I recently shot a daylong commercial product shoot where I needed this lens on a gimbal the whole day. It will balance on my C70 and RS2 (barely, in vertical mode), but it was so heavy to shoot on all day! I could barely stand up by the end. Took me a couple days to recover. I’ve been considering picking up the 18mm f/3.5 just because it’s smaller and lighter. That experience has also driven me back to my Contax-Zeiss set, which is of course much easier to maneuver. Still, the image quality out of this 21mm is fantastic.

Hi Mark! Yeah the 21mm is big and heavy, but in reality it has the same weight distribution like the Zeiss ZF 25/35/50mm f2 and the 85mm f1.4...so you can easily swap the lenses without rebalancing the gimbal! I love this set of lenses and the 21mm is the most cinematic one from the set! Cheers!

@@LucaBono.Studio I should probably have said I’m using the ZE versions, rather than ZF, which are all a bit heavier. I would’ve loved to go with ZF, but I just can’t get used to Nikon’s backward focus direction. I’ve got the 21, the 25/2, the 35/2, and the 50/1.4. Of those, I even notice a fairly sizable weight difference between the 21 and the 25. The 21 ZE is just a beast.

@@theothermarkwilliams Ah ok! I'm ok with the Nikon backward rotation, but I understand that it can be annoying. Aren't you going to add a short telephoto lens in the kit?

@@LucaBono.Studio I would very much like to, but man, I have bought waaaaaay more lenses in 2022 than I had planned on! Plus, I'm filming mostly on a Super35 sensor (C70), so even the 50/1.4 ZE really has the FOV of a 70mm, so *almost* in short telephoto range. Still, I'd like to get the 85/1.4 and maybe the 18/3.5. But I've bought a bunch of Contax Zeiss this year, too, including the 35-70mm and the 80-200mm. I am just in awe of those lenses. They are mind-bogglingly good. Luca, I also wanted to say how much I've been enjoying your content this year. I really, really appreciate the style of your videos on YT: You never overhype anything, and your image quality and artistry is extraordinary. Kudos to you, my man. You deserve a lot more subscribers.

Sorry for the late response, but I don't get notifications if someone is writing a reply. Yeah, if you're filming with the C70 the 21mm and 50mm are enough! The 85mm is fantastic, I'm going to upload a video about it soon, but it's not a must have with s35 cameras...it's a bit too long. I never tried the 18mm f3.5 but the 21mm and 15mm are superior lenses...so you can probably skip that lens too. So, you can stop buying lenses for this year ahahah! Thanks for the kind words, mate. Is there much of a difference between these and the Loxia 21mm?. If so, which would your advise to take for filmmaking ?

I don't know. I never used the Loxia 21mm, but from what I see online the loxia seems like a solid lens (but limited to E-Mount cameras)

Yeah, it should be able to do it...probably with a bit more of vignetting
