Nice collection of scopes. There is only one problem with those high end scopes and that is when you buy one and get used to it there is no way of getting back on cheeper scopes.

On my first hunting rifle I had old Tasco 3-9x40 (made in Japan in '80), then I upgrade it whit Burris Six X 2-12x40 and that was a big difference in sharpness of the image. On my second rifle I use for foxing I put Schmidt&Bender Zenith 3-12x50 and that is significant difference. Like you say almost like night vision. One more very important thing is proper selection of scope mounts and proper mounting of tham.

Replacement of extractor was the smallest problem, replacement done in 2 min and a few minutes more for fileing so it can work correctly. Maybe you did not notice folders above photos. Indeed a collection of top tier optics. Originally I was drawn to the Schmidt & Bender PS II but was absolutely blindsided by the light transmission quality of the Steiner military 4-12 X 50 so that’s what I’m using on the.30 caliber. I was so impressed by its overall quality that I purchased one of their P4Xi scopes in 1-4 X 24 for the 5.56 and .308 gas guns. I must say that though the old adage is true(“but once-cry once”) the lasting satisfaction of having a top tier optic atop ones rifle make the purchase that much sweeter. Cheers

I can definately vouch for the Zeiss conquest line. I own a 3-9x40 conquest (assembled in USA) and I did own a Conquest DL 3-12x50 illuminated (updated version of Duralyt) for a time. Both are great. The duralyt/DL is just incredible. You can easily shoot at high magnification up to and beyond the end of legal shooting hours for hunting. Although I think most fully multi-coated scopes these days can achieve that. I recommend Meopta also. They built the conquest line for Zeiss, and continue to offer basically the same line as the 'MeoPro'. They are just a spectacular value, especially if you can find them on sale in the $400 range. Noticeably better than the Leupold vx-3i IMO, albeit for slightly more money. If you're worried about weight without sacrificing optical quality, then I don't think you can beat the Leupold vx-3i series, unless you wanna pony up 2x the coin for Swarovski z3. Just one idiots 2c. Cheers.

Great video! I've seen so many people buy somewhat pricey rifles and then go cheap on glass... My wife has a Kahles on her Steyr and she loves it. I tend to stay with Leupold scopes on my Winchesters because of their warranty and customer service, excellent! I'm in agreement that the German/Austrian scopes are a step above the majority of others but you'll need to open your wallet or be patient and grab one when it pops up at a great price. Good glass is well worth the money, you can't hit what you can't see clearly.

Nice collection of scopes you have there! My favorites in my collection are my Kahles Helia CSX 3-12x56, Helia 5 2.4-12x56, Swarovski Z6i G2 2.5-15x56 and the Zeiss Victory HT 3-12x56, because they are great for low-light conditions. The best on the market, Schmidt & Bender Polar has the best light transmission on the market, with 96%. Victory HT 3-12x56 is at 95%, the Kahles Helia CSX/CBX 93,9%! The Swarovski is about the same! It really is great to see an American citizen to find the greatness and beauty (except the price) of European scopes!

For an R8 there would be the option of getting a Zeiss with IC (Illumination Control) that couples the reticle illumination to the cocking lever of the gun. Optically speaking: You can't go wrong with a good Zeiss, Swarovski or Schmidt&Bender.

The thing is a lot of the glass that most major optics manufacturers use comes from Asia this is especially true with Zeiss and Leupold. Lower end zeiss scopes like the conquest series the new V4's and Zeiss Terra series use Japanese Glass. NightForce scopes are actually made in Japan but their quality control is done here in the US. There are only a handful of companies that actually produce their own glass, Schmidt and Bender is one of them. IOR Valdada does use German Schott glass. Grinding and polishing glass is extremely expensive to do. That's why most optics manufacturers out source their glass from Asia. When you buy a higher end scope you are mainly paying for that quality control. Higher end manufacturers severely vett their glass and contract them to use their own coatings. Out sourcing keeps costs down but you still are getting quality products.
@paulsimmons5726
@paulsimmons5726 6 жыл бұрын
Eggomania86 - Schmidt and Bender scopes are simply unbelievable, however, they don't produce an entry level series. The closest thing to an entry level they sell is their fixed power scopes but those are all over a Grand! Yep, quality cost you, one way or the other.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 6 жыл бұрын
This is all excellent information and news to me. I'm from the past and thought when it says "Made in Germany" - everything - the entire scope and all components - are made in Germany. Oh well. Live and learn. I like the Schmidt & Benders a lot and they should make more second focal plane models. I have not seen an IOR Valdada - I will look for one.
@Eggomania86
@Eggomania86 6 жыл бұрын
Schmidt and Bender scopes are awesome. I like the pm ii models they are pricey. You definitely get what you pay for. I compete in long range matches. I work for a living, it took me a year of putting away money working OT and a tax return to purchase one it's a $3200 scope. My saying is buy once cry once. As far as companies using Japanese glass there is nothing wrong with them. I run an SWFA SS 3-15x42 ffp on my hunting rifle.My preference is first focal plane, that's because no matter what magnification you are set on your recticle is always going to be true. For instance, if you are on 3× or 15x one mil is always going to be one mil. The only downside when hunting is the recticle zooms in and out in relation to the target. This is important because you can use it for range estimations and when using your recticle for hold over memorizing the sub tensions isn't critical. I found that the SWFA scopes as far as optical clarity are on par with leupold mk4's. I later found out that they get their glass at the same place. I never dealt with Nightforce. You will see a Leupold scope say machined designed and Assembled in the USA. Glass is imported. I think the Zeiss conquest V4 scopes do say designed in Germany made in Japan. Schmidt and Bender do use the German glass. It's companies like Zeiss and possibly Swarovsky do use asian glass for their entry level scopes. Leupold is more honest about it.
@AntonGudenus
@AntonGudenus 6 жыл бұрын
Swarovski doesn't really have an "entry-level" (the cheapest new scope you can get from them is $1500). They mainly use Schott glass from Germany and glass from their own production for their optical products. To put it into perspective: the 35 year old Swarovski Habicht 6x42 on my "guest-gun" has better overall optical quality than the new Leupold VX6 2-12x42 on my main gun. The only reason I didn't buy a Swaro, Zeiss Victory, or S&B for that one too was price. The new Terra range from Zeiss though is highly dubious. Seems they are selling out their good name with cheap glass and manufacturing...

I like the video. The Leupold vx2 and vx3 are great scopes. Great for the money. I would like a fair comparison in price range for Leupold. The European scopes are high end and expensive. Meaning you’ll get better glass typically. The Vx2 and Vx3 I wouldn’t consider high end. So I’m sure a high end Leupold with equal value of the European scopes chosen can easily match with clarity and light gathering

Zeiss, they own the only private crystal quartz mine. All others are lead crystal, and inferior. Now I only have two zeiss, a USA conquest 3-9x40 rapid z 600, and a recently acquired HD5 3-15x42 German made, rapid z 800 reticle. Love the rapid z reticles, they need to bring them back, quick, usefully accurate and visually appealing.

I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to work in the outfitting/guide industry for a few seasons. Foreign hunters tend to place expensive high end scopes atop their expensive high end rifles. I have seen how most of those named here stack up in the field, in sunrise and sunset situations. The best color diff. and brightness AND reliability was...Swarovski. The Zeiss were nice to look through, certainly, in good light, but the reports I overheard were that after appx 1000 rounds atop a magnum rifle, the Zeiss turned into a baby rattle. A fact most of the German hunters despised. at last light, I compared a 3x18x56 (30mm tube) swaro to a Bushnell elite 3200 3x9x40, the Swarovski provided a 20 minute extension of usable hunting light.I hunt with the 3200 elite to this day, as I have not yet purchased that winning lottery ticket.

Very interesting and illuminating : ) I emerged from the cave a few years ago and still carry my Lee Speed or equivalent. I guess flipping up the ivory bead is a good idea in the leopard tree. Still, I realize you know tons more than I do and scopes are real and make the difference when the light crawls away. So Swarovski is the ticket. I have S&B - seems good as well. I like the Elite choice - an excellent scope. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'll email Zeiss and ask them if they could use more glue and threading : )

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you for your reply. I am also not far removed from my hole in the ground, you could ask anyone who knows me, they will confirm! I have NO experience with Schmidt and Bender, or Kahles, or Sheppard, etc, they are way out of my price league. funny thing about that, When I was an assistant guide, I had a $269.oo "Centurion" P-14 which was chambered in 300 win mag by that company. It featured a 24" barrel, light profile, at that time I had a Tasco titan 3x9x40 30mm tube scope, it retailed about $450.oo cdn. it was the best I could afford. My setup cost less than 1/10th my hunter's option (not including his scope) My setup would group sub moa 100 yds with the handloads I had developed. The snobbery in hunting camp was dispelled when I demonstrated this in a gravel pit, using a pickup fender for a rest. I would never describe myself as an expert, that may be your affinity. I am a guy who enjoys your informative youtube video's, I also enjoy iron sighted rifles, at 57 yrs old I can still run them in good light. The history on those Titan scopes is a sorry tale. Mine failed after about 1200 rounds. I contacted Bushnell after they bought Tasco, and they replaced my TITAN with a 2.5x16x42 elite 6500 with a duplex reticle. That is not as lucky as winning a lottery, but very fortunate nonetheless! I hope you never have trouble with your ZEISS like I described. They will warranty repair, but it is an inconvenience. Quality optics are a pleasure, and that extra image clarity or color quality or whatever they call it adds to the hunt. stay humble! Phil Hewkin.

Thanks for the scope video. Much appreciated. One thing I’ve never focused on much, until recently, is the different types of rifling. I know marlin has their micro-groove, which is different, but I haven’t studied the other profiles much. I have an FX airgun that is smooth for most of the barrel with a twist only on the last couple inches near the muzzle (extremely accurate by the way). Maybe you could do a video explaining some of the different profiles and the supposed advantages/disadvantages of each (standard/5R/Polygon/ratchet/etc). Thanks
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 6 жыл бұрын
Great idea. I will. The FX method you describe is similar to some of the British Paradox guns - which were rifled only for the last few inches of the barrel. I'll ask the camera people to figure out how to film the bores - I have all the different types of rifling.

@duggydo 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It always seemed to me that there must be a better way to achieve spin stabilization and reduce friction by gradually increasing spin rate as the bullet moved closer to the muzzle. Maybe there is, but I have just recently started researching the different rifling types and methods. I look forward to your video on it my friend!

I totally agree that Meopta ZD and Meostars are the best and brightest. I own an older 3-12x50mm ZD Tactic FFP 30mm tube, and two 4-16x44mm AO SFP 30mm Mil-Dot reticles. The FFP ZD Tactic has a Mil-Dot reticle with just the tiny centre cross illuminated plus a set of ranging lines based on a height of 1.8m which is about a regular man's height. All of these scopes feature 0.05 mils per click fine adjustments. The Mil-Dot reticles in the 4-16x44mm Meostars are nice and big and the dots are actually diamonds which makes it easy to use a half dot hold for example. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with Meopta.

I studied and searched to find low dollar scopes that work. I shoot ground squirrels with both air rifles and long range powder burners .204 Ruger's. Squirrels blend in to the terrain you have to pick them out I can shoot 500 yards a nicer scope would be nice. Scoping a dozen rifles gets expensive. I use power full tactical scopes 6x24x44 or 50mm this helps a lot. Pick a good rifle and a good scope they go together.

Kind of a disparate group of scopes from early 2000 era. There is a lot more involved in good optics than coatings - though those are important for contrast and transmission, but not for resolution or optical distortions. Since then, there have been many changes to the scope market. However, I will say the newer ones optically aren't noticeably better than those of a few years ago. My older 3-12x56 Zeiss Diavari optically looks just as good as their new (and very expensive) 2.5-20 x 60 Victory V8 series. And the new Leupold VX-6HD scopes optically don't look much better then the older Bushnell Elite 6500, or the older Vari-x IIIs when I put them side by side. Even so, one should be prepared to spend a minimum of about $800 to $1,000 on a rifle scope. And never put a cheap scope on any rifle (other than a rimfire possibly). Basically, it makes sense to put an expensive scope on a cheap rifle, but not the other way around. Another thing few hunters pay much attention to are binoculars. However, we should because we spend oodles more time looking through binoculars than rifle scopes, unless we're only shooting targets. Whereas poor image quality will make us leave mediocre binoculars at home after one or 2 uses, quality field glasses will always be at our side. You can get by with skimping somewhat on the price of a rifle scope, but not binoculars. You need to spend a minimum of just over $1,000 US to get quality binoculars. The Zeiss Conquest and the new Nikon HG series represent the minimum acceptable level of quality, in my opinion. But better if you can get one from the Swarovski EL, Zeiss SF or the Niikon EDG series. You will never regret the money spent or leave home without them. Incidentally, the 2 top scopes (FOR THAT PERIOD) - according to the SWF Optics Talk forums - was the Zeiss 3-12x56 Diavari and the Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50. Me and another guy spent an hour looking through both scopes from my balcony in low light. Not sure what to say: I thought optically the Zeiss had the edge; however, the other guy, who was younger and likely had better eyes, thought the Schmidt & Bender had the edge. Anyhow, both were really magnificent scopes.

Thanks Will - You know more than I do - appreciate that you took the time. Of all my scopes the brightest according to my weak testing are the old Kahles line with steel tubes. I don't know what combination of glass and/or coatings resulted in that brightness but they are incredible in low light and even in daylight the "look" of the image is, to me different. Probably my imagination. Back in the real world, I find the S&B superb and 1-2% behind - the Zeiss.

Proper lens glass is i believe, difficult to make and is therefore expensive. The same with the coatings. With scopes, as with everything else in life, you get what you pay for. Both are excellent - the Z6 is hard to beat. The Leupold VX5 HD is a great value. Any equivalent Zeiss is ideal. Sorry to not be specific : all three are excellent scope manufacturers; Leupold tends to be the best value. All have fine glass, are clear and sharp with edge to edge clarity and superb light transmission and colors are easily distinguished. Hope this helps a little. USOG

@@sarahconner9433 most likely a .270 but still debating on whether to go 6.5 creedmore for less kick or 7mm mag to reach out further. I'd say 600 yards max probably.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I found a store and looked at them all in the store and none seemed to resolve my biggest concern with cheaper scopes. They had fast focus eyepieces which usually allow movement of the reticles in every scope I've tested with wiggle. I ended up grabbing an SWFA Ultralite which is not as good optically but not bad & is super light with a nice reticle and has a locking eyepiece that doesn't ever really need to be adjusted once set.

All Nightforce’s I’ve seen are USA. Huskemaw’s are made in Japan though. I had a Blue Diamond sitting for two years cause I wrestled with the idea of a scope that is not America or German mounted on one of my rifles. I finally mounted it on a 330 Dakota and I shot 2 spring bears with it in Alberta (2019). One black and one chocolate.

To be honest none of Duralyt or Conquest is made in Germany. The Zeiss Conquest V6 is made in Germany though. If you want an amazing Zeiss scope go for a old Zeiss Diavari V or Zeiss V8. A 40 year old Zeiss is much clearer than a Duralyt. You know you've got the real deal if the Zeiss scopes are marked with "T*" I bought my 15 year old Zeiss Diavari V T* 3-12x56 for $1000 last year. Zeiss V8s costs around $2000-2500.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I think Zeiss wants to get a foot into the American market. For instance Leopold, Vortex, Bushnells are not that pricey. I think they want to compete with scopes in that price range.
