I have a similar Zenith that my grandparents bought new. My mom told me the whole family was glued to it all day on December 7th, 1941, listening to news about the pearl harbor attack. I inherited the radio in 1984, to my surprise it worked very well. Last time I turned it on was around 1995, again it worked well, but I could see that the insulation was disintegrating from the wires, and decided not risk the set by turning it on again. Your is beautiful! And sounds great. Congratulations on owning such a beauty. I appreciated your story, and share the same.

Thank you! A few weeks ago I purchased a Zenith 8-S-563.. The cabinet has been restored and is beautiful. I had the components restored and it sounds great. I love the feel of the dial tuner.

Wow, that's gorgeous. I have a similar-size radio, but lower spec than your radio, Zenith 5-S-151, from 1937. My grandfather bought it new, and I have had it since the mid-60's. It had some repairs in the 60's and the latest was in 1973, and it still works. Unfortunately, for many years when it was unused, it sat in an attic near a window, and the cabinet is sun damaged, and I had to replace the grill cloth in the 70's. I can remember sometimes listening to shortwave with the lights off, just looking at that dial and listening.

Yes sir. My favorite was a Sears silvertone.constantly on the run to fair radio in Lima Ohio for tubes. Swept pourches, mowed lawns, and shovelled snow. That was the place to be after school. 73 de kv4li

I have had one of these radios for about 45 years now. Couldn't wait to plug it in when I got home and of course a shorted filter blew out the 6X5. After replacing the filters I used it for a couple of decades. Haven't powered it up in a long time and am not looking forward to replacing all the bad wiring. Nice video.

I have one of these that has been restored and plays. I originally bought it because it looks like you could talk to Venus on it :-) Recently I picked up a chairside with the same chassis and dial, going to try to get it restored electronically...

My folks had a earlier model. (I think) I remember the box antenna and the controls, I seemed on theirs when you changed the bands the whole register would change depending on what band you tuned in. I used to listen to it all the time until the line cord went bad. I changed it but it still didn't work.

I just bought one of these. I want to get it back working again. It's a very clean and well taken care of radio set, but like yours, the wires are losing their insulation on mine as well.

I remember our family owned a large console such as this and on the dial face was "TV picture". I couldn't figure out HOW pictures were going to be displayed on that dial face (but soon found out when TV came out)!

Thanks for clarifying the "M" on the resistors. The schematics threw me off when I saw the "M" printed but the value of the resistor was something else.

This isn’t a shutter dial. A shutter dial actually has full face plates that change for each band.

I don't understand how the presets work. You push the button but there tuning capacitor plates remain in the same position. I've seen other radios that have preset buttons that move the tuning capacitor.
@jefftranter4 жыл бұрын
The presets use separate tuning circuits from the main tuning capacitor and they use individual inductors (coils) that are adjusted for each present.

@@jefftranter is that why it says "Automatic Tuning"?

@@kylefafnis Yes, I assume so.

Can you provide a detailed explanation of how you installed a Circuit breaker to protect the power transformer? i have this same radio and would like to prevent that from happening, Thank you!
@jefftranter4 жыл бұрын
Basically just break the AC line between the power switch and the power transformer primary and connect a circuit breaker in series. A 2 or 3 Amp breaker should be suitable. You could also use a fuse with an in-line fuse holder, 2 or 3 Amp slow blo. I would normally use a fuse but I happenned to have a circuit breaker handy and it fit in an existing hole in the chassis.

You are different, because you make zoom shots and slow display and talk on all the parts, so the followers can track every segment in the vintage radio, good luck. but what is the difference between the zienth s - 8 - 536 and s - 12 - 471 and both produced on 1940 , thanks
@jefftranter2 жыл бұрын
The 12-S-471 is a similar console to the 8-S-563, but it is a higher end radio with 12 tubes rather than eight, a "magic eye" tuning indicator, and other features.

@@jefftranter thanks Jeff, please I need to know who is the owner of the youtube channel radio 415 and why he is blocking the comments ! Any way I liked your accurate zoom slow way of photographing and explaining every part of your vintage sets , but the wooden console we saw needs more better refurbishment to be shiney and new. Generally, I am a new subscribe now, good luck

Do you still have this radio? I have one that has not played in the past 50 years. I want it working, and I can probably do the work. I will say no more until I hear from you. Cheers

+maplewoodsp Yes, I still have this radio.

+Jeff Tranter a resistor burned 50 years ago. My dad and I pulled it from the chassis, and I have no idea where it was located. I was a photographer for Howard SAMs. So I like Photofact. Did you take any pictures under the chassis? I had a picture from a ham operator. I had printed it and placed inside the radio cabinet. I moved the radio from my family home recently and found that picture missing. I should have gotten this radio working many years ago, but it is not too late. It was a powerful receiver and had very good sound. I know many shortwave stations I listened to have ceased broadcast. Zenith and RCA were incredible radio companies. Zenith televisions not so much.

+maplewoodsp Email me at tranter@pobox.com and I'll send you some info. It may take me a day or two before I can open up the chassis and take some pictures.
