I recently learn about Birgitta Helmersson's designs and then this video came up in my feed 😍 It was so much fun to follow the process of you making this dress! I have been curious about making & designing zero waste clothing for a while but it has been a bit overwhelming how to do it & know where to start. However, I recently tried out making a zero waste refashion which really pushed myself creatively as I had to reuse everything in the garment.

What I love about your work is that you finish the seams on your garments. It really bothers me when people don't finish the seams on clothing. Good job 😊. Thinking of doing that dress. I would make the bodice smaller though because I don't like it being that big. I either sew with organza ribbon on the seam or a strip of fusible interfacing to give the out pocket more structure and prevent gaposis.

Thanks so much for your comment! Yes I couldn't agree more! Even for me the one from 58" fabric was huge so I had to adjust the width. But other than that, I really love how this dress eventually looks like and how comfy it is! 😊 Using less wider fabric (depends on your body circumference) might help! (You will need some experiments before finding the right size for you though!)

I want to use French seams to be sure my linen doesn't fray. I'm having lots of trouble at the underarm's right angle even though I set in the sleeves using the method indicated by the pattern. Should I use a different seam finish along the tiny bodice side seam? Thank you for your instruction!
@SewingTherapy

Hi Sara. I was wondering how you finish your serge ends? I'm new to serving and have been trying to pull it back through. But do you use fray check or anything? I wish serging had a lock option 😂
@SewingTherapy
@SewingTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, most of serging stitches are locked by another sering stitch so you don't need to worry, but the hem! I usually just cut it short as the main stitch will lock it not to fray! If you like a professional look, leave the tail of serging stitches long and slip it into folded hem when you sew the last stitch. That's what I sometimes do! Hope this makes sense! 😊
@paulcarlachapman628

Hmmmm... I'm accustomed to curved seams, especially at necklines and sleeves, but this is definitely interesting. One thing I'm not understanding: what is the purpose of the facing near the hemline? I like the idea of no waste. Even when I cut my fabric closely there are always scraps.
@SewingTherapy
@SewingTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
I love the concept of this zero waste pattern so much and it's so easier to apply the pattern to any size of fabric remnants! There's no purpose for that facing other than reducing scraps. You can skip that part, of course! 😊

@@SewingTherapy Actually, I found a post on the pattern website that explained it. "I guess technically speaking you could say these don’t have a ‘purpose’ , but it actually depends on how you look at it. They are attached in such a way that you do end up covering a little of your side seam and it makes the garment look lovely and finished on the inside, and also it does add a little more weight here into the hem, as well a design detail with the triangular stitch line." 👍

hello Sara, question: when doing the gathers for the sleeve this is done inside the seam allowance right?
@SewingTherapy

Why you didn't put the measurements in the beggining and the length of the fabric we need ?

I mean I love everything Birgitta makes but without your video I would just left that pattern at side. Definitely no a very inclusive pattern as have no been numerology well explain apart of she taking you thought the process. I’m confused about of the right measurements for each piece of the dress? Thank you x

I don’t quite get the zero waste concept. That pattern looks like it uses a lot of fabric. So if you have to use more fabric, why is that better? Isn’t that wasteful? My grandmother would have though so.

We waste 15% of the fabric when we make a garment and the concept of Zero Waste garment is to reduce that ratio! You can apply this pattern to the smaller fabrics if it works for your size and preference. IMHO the pattern is genius!

Zero waste? Excessive use isn’t a virtue either.

How is this zero waste? You used an excessive amount of fabric for your size imo

You can use any size of rectangular piece even though the pattern suggest that much for the oversized look.
