I went to a local major in VA and the smell was so bad that they sent out a PSA saying they were going to be conducting "sniff checks" at the door. LOL

It's an interesting phenomenom; not only you get the generic allergic-to-soap-unwashed but add adrenaline from a high-octane fighting game competition and you get a bunch of people to _really fucking reeking_

I remember going to a tourney when I was 14. And I was in absolute DISBELIEF at how DISGUSTING IT WAS. I've smelled Pre-K rooms that smell nicer than that venue. I will never ever go to a tournament again after that. Good lord

I went to a Magic the Gathering tournament a couple years ago held at a local public library, and they had to shut the event down early due to the overwhelming smell and the number of complaints from other visitors. I went to a pretty big regional in my country once and at some point I saw some lady walk in with a camera, presumably vlogging, and she said “it smells like I need an oxygen tank”

Haven’t been to a smash tournament, but I went to my first comic con in August last year. And it was actually pretty clean. The only time anyone started to smell bad is when we went outside for food because it’s Arizona so we immediately started cooking ourselves. But other than that it was pretty nice. And it was mostly women wearing HEAVY perfume. Like I wasn’t trying to sniff people, but seriously we would be walking through a crowd and you walk by a group of girls and just get a strong clean smell. It was the exact opposite of a smash tournament but just as strong lmao. There was also a smash mini tournament set up on one end of the convention hall and this one dude I played against was actually super nice and smelled super fresh. When we finished, he wanted to shake my hand so I did, and he pulled me in for a hug. Pretty cool dude.

I went to a local tournament after my friends egged me on to compete as I was pretty decent. Unfortunately both magic the gathering and smash tournament were held at the same time so walking into the store was like entering a sauna of thick stench. People passing by smelling like armpit and moldy gym clothes made it impossible to concentrate. It made me realize they just don't wash or it's a tactic to throw off your opponents

I’ve mostly only been to locals and thankfully it’s usually not even noticeable. It takes just one or two really bad smelling people to make the whole room reek. Played against someone like that once and it’s not only nasty but super distracting.

Bro I used to go to this weekly tournament in Orlando FL that took place on Wednesdays in a buffalo wild wings (shout out to CFL scene) and bro… tell me how the FUCK could smash players make an OPEN WINGS RESTAURANT SMELL LIKE DOG SHIT BODY ODOR?? Yes, a live open restaurant. We played on this one section near the entrance meanwhile the rest of the restaurant was fully open serving food. Crazy.

Lots (not all) of competitive gamers/nerds are socially awkward and/or introverted, they often avoid leaving their house and dont prioritize showering and washing their clothes. But an event like this gets them all in one place. We all know these types, they often smell like shit.

I have competed in two tournaments so far. Came in 3rd in my the first tourney and 2nd in the second tourney. To be honest I can't say that I have ever noticed any odor at smash tournaments, but then again I'm a nurse so poor hygiene is probably not even going to register when compared to necrotic flesh and stage 4 wound infections.

Went to GOML 2019 and it was fine. Definitely helped that the ceiling was like 50 feet high and it was in a huge convention centre. Also helped that I didn’t have to play against anyone. But the overall crowd was fine.

Okay he said that a lot of the players are older but at least in Ult, there's more young players than ever and teenage boys tend to be some of the smelliest individuals, so there's that too

The few local tournaments I’ve been to haven’t been that bad. There was one time where they ordered McDonald’s and the food ended up stinking up the place. They were no longer allowed to eat food at that venue. Funnily enough Reptile conventions and expos with literal animals have been some of the least smelliest gatherings I’ve been to

I've always thought this but have never been to a tournament to prove it. However, I have been to a con where some kid in a Call of Duty ghillie suit wore it for two days straight. You could smell the kid from 20 ft away while he sat alone playing cod.

I went to a melee tournament once with my big brother (i only went to Smash ultimate tournaments before, this was just for fun) and we had some nasty fellas there. For context: It was in a church and lot of them traveled there a long time, so they arrived the night before and stayed over night, so it was understandable, that they had no way to shower. Some of them, however, clearly didn't shower for _longer than that..._ . One of them constantly sat next to me, walked barefoot and kept digging between his toes _RIGHT NEXT TO ME_ , it was absolutely nasty...

This is part of why I only went to a smash tournament once lol. But I get that playing fighting games can also make you sweaty. But even so, I'm too introverted to consume such smell.

Never have gone to a major Smash Tourney, or I think any locals around my area. Thank goodness, I can't believe Smash players won't take 10 minutes off one day to take at least one shower. I've only been going to my college tourney and the scene is really small like 15 people, so I never smelled anything rank. Now I'm kind of scared of trying to visit an actual major event, or a nearby local event.

Our anime convention in Montreal doesn't smell bad. I dunno, maybe we're just in the habit of practicing basic hygiene up here.
