Zinfandel - All About the Red Zinfandel Wine Grape, White Zinfandel, and Old Vine Zinfandel

Күн бұрынZinfandel (red and white) gave California it’s claim to wine fame, and was the most popular grape planted in California until Cabernet took over in the 90s. Zinfandel is easy to love; it’s fruity, spicy, bold and assertive, and easy to drink! It also is the same grape as the infamous White Zinfandel, and although it’s defiantly not my favorite wine, we’ll break down why White Zinfandel may have actually saved red Zinfandel! Plus, what is "old vine"" Zinfandel?

Don't know about the vine age, but "Gnarly Head"'s Old Vine Zinfandel is one of my favorite wines!

My dad loves them and the Old Ghost Old Vine Zinfandel. Actually he just really loves old vine Zinfandel.

How funny. White Zinfandel didnt get me into wine, but regular Zinfandel did. The Prisoner was my gateway wine.

Chris G Nice! I remember when the Prisoner first came out: it was a phenomenon. I’ve never seen a wine catch fire like that!

@@visforvino Lighting in a bottle! It was a combination of good wine and good marketing with it's unique label. I think since Costellation brands bought it the quality has dropped nonetheless it has a unique place in Zinfandel history is you ask me.

WSET loves white Zinfandel. You also have to take into account that Zinfandel ripens unevenly so you can get jammy fruit and nice fresh fruit at the same time.

As a Zinfindel grower, I can say the honest reason Zinfindel is used for Rose's is the uneven ripening. Harvesting a red from Zinfindel is difficult to make high quality.

Yep. It is indeed a Croatian wine grape. Before grape geneticists cracked the code people thought Zinfandel was an American wine grape. However DNA analysis by UCDavis scientists showed that Zinfandel is actually Plavic Mali under a different name. In any case Zinfandel has really found its home away from home in America.

Ok, all of these claims about the differences of red wines are often exaggerated. The differences are there but they are not significant enough. I tried red Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon side by side. Somewhat different intensity of smell but in the end the taste is almost identical.

Depends on where it’s from. If they’re both from new world, warm climate, yes, they’ll be similar. But Bordeaux Cabernet (old world cool climate) vs new world Zinfandel would be wildly different. Also, Cabernet and Zinfandel are both dark fruits and full body and oaked. If you compared Zinfandel to Pinot Noir (light body, less oak, red fruits) again, wildly different.
