Grenadine is traditionally made from pomegranates, and in modern times, black currants may be used as a base for the flavor. While it may taste somewhat like cherry candies, it is not cherry flavored.

The grenadine products that have a cherry flavor have it because its cheaper to make grenadine out of cherries. Because most of of the cherry ones don't specify, making your own grenadine is so worth it.

I once made grenadine at home using legit pomegranate juice. (Combine equal parts by weight pomegranate juice and sugar in a pot, and simmer until sugar is completely dissolved.) Although it turned out darker than the store-bought grenadine, it was by no means inferior.
@InfernalBanana3 жыл бұрын
Grenadine: from “granada”, or pomegranate. It’s a pomegranate syrup, not cherry, though maraschino cherries have lead to the common misconception. It’s typically pure pomegranate juice, sugar, some pomegranate molasses, and a few drops of orange flower water.
@That_Guy423 жыл бұрын
You are correct, but cheap grenadine usually is some cheap alternative to actual pomegranate. With this drink I think it's probably totally fine to use some cheap knock-off cherry based grenadine.

im all for variations on classics, but using pineapple juice AND maraschino liqueur AND strawberry jam AND pineapple rum AND wray & nephew makes this a completely different cocktail. there isnt even grapefruit juice, cinnamon syrup, absinthe, or angostura bitters, all of which are integral components and are what makes a zombie taste like a zombie. pretty much the only similarity here is the mint bouquet garnish. dont get me wrong, this is probably a great drink, but not a zombie

Where I'm from there are only 2 variations of the recipe, though there are many different recipes for a zombie and I'm not sure any of them can claim to be the right recipe. None of the ingredients you said were missing are even in our local version. Ours is the 4 rums 1 ounce each, light, dark, coconut, spiced and then orange juice and a splash of pineapple juice. The only variation here is some places add grenadine and others don't. I feel the grenadine makes it start to taste too much like rum punch or a mai tai. Mint, bitters, absinthe and cinnamon aren't even in any of the other recipes I've tried. Where are you from? I'd like to try your local version some time!

While I have to agree with everyone that Don the Beachcomber is spinning in his grave after watching this video, I do think it’s fair enough to call this drink a zombie variation - given the decades that bartenders didn’t really know what a zombie was, there is a long history of mucking about with the recipe and calling any strong rum drink like this a “zombie.” That being said, I wish they had mentioned the 1934 recipe and established it as a baseline for Trevor’s version.

God i almost lost it when they said that rum is closer to vodka. Like please taste that W&N and then some whiskey new make and tell me which is closer to vodka lol. This is not a zombie, straight up. I'm sure it's good but it's not a zombie. And the Pineapple rum is not the same base as the OFTD, it's their Dark rum which is from Trinidad. And the OFTD is not only from barbados as mentioned last episode, but also has jamaican and demerara rum. There's so many books and videos at this point showing you how to make an original 1934 Zombie or any of Don's variations. There's no reason they should be calling this a Don's zombie.
