Ok 😁 Spent 3 full days testing and working on this video. Here's my full In-Depth Review and Everything You Need to Know about Apple's Blackmagic eGPU! Hope you guys enjoy the video! Great review!! Unfortunately I already have 2 eGFX Breakaway Box 650 eGPUs and they damn ugly, lol !! however I have them running my Radeon Pro WX9100 cards. On another note I've just ordered my new MacBook Pro and have gone for the 2.2 6core this time, but with the video and ram both upgraded and specified only 512gb ssd .. and forgot that I got a discount when ordered on my business a/c !! result there, I think.

Using the eGPU to drive the MacBook's own display is a waste of time -- the TB3 bandwidth will be chewed up by the outgoing and incoming data streams so the graphics performance takes a massive performance hit, obviously. eGPUs are designed to drive external displays with the TB3 cable from the notebook carrying the graphics data in one direction only.

There is a new setting that you need to make in Mojave that causes your MacBook to favor the eGPU. Here is how to set it up. 1- Make sure you are connected to your eGPU 2 - Go to finder 3 - Go to Applications folder 4 - Right mouse button on the application and select "Get Info" 5 - Select the box next to "Favor eGPU"

Kino Zomby Makes a lot of sense. It’s smaller, quieter and a lot better built. If you want a swappable eGPU, buy another enclosure - there’s plenty available!

The whole point of eGPU is that you can keep upgrading it as your needs change. Might as well buy an iMac Pro. cost of MBP and egpu is similar to iMac Pro

Nightowl358 Sadly this isn’t just a MacBook thing. If you’ve been following eGPUs, you’ll know that the main issue with them throughout has been outrageous pricing. The inflation on graphics cards just made it worse. Apple’s product is no exception.

you can buy a 580 for $300, so then why is the encloser more expensive than the card itself? you could literally buy 2 of these cards and put them in crossfire and still have $100 left

When using the eGPU for gaming, it has to be done with an external monitor because the eGPU isn't connected to the internal display like the internal GPU. So anything that has to display what the GPU has processed, an external monitor will be needed.

+Shawn Xu - Final cut pro DOES IN FACT use the GPU, HOWEVER, the last time I looked there's no GPU selection to change which GPU to use in a system and it defaults to gpu0 (which is the one in the laptop/computer).... An eGPU would be gpu1,2,3,n ....

Can you force the "non-supported" apps to run on the eGPU with the internal display? I know it's possible with Windows, at least if you are using an Nvidia card.

Final Cut Pro X currently supports eGPU in two areas. The first is VR, allowing you to connect an HTC VIVE headset to the video output of eGPU. This means you can edit 360° video and watch in real time through a VR headset on Thunderbolt 3 Mac computers - like the MacBook Pro - which wasn’t possible before. The other area is when using a secondary display. You can connect a second monitor to the video output of eGPU, freeing up the internal GPU for graphics tasks like rendering.

Thank you for this video. Very useful. I have a question if you have tested following config: MacBook Pro 13 (or 15) connected to eGPU, from eGPU we connect to LG 4K monitor no.1, from monitor no.1 we connect to LG 4K monitor no. 2 - plus Belki Ethernet to USB-C adaptor connected to LG 4K monitor no. 1. I am thinking about such config. I will mainly use this for office work. Please share such info if you have tested so.

When I discovered that this BlackMagic eGPU is not upgradeable, I immediately have no interest whatsoever in purchasing it. The whole point of an eGPU enclosure is to do what Apple doesn't let you do - upgrade! Thank you for the video. Very very good. *thumbs up*

I’ve bought a Sonnet TB3 eGPU with a GTX1080ti from Bizon-Tech for my 2014 MacBook Pro with TB2, I always have to have a TV attached to the cards HDMI port for it to work. I get around 25fps in X-Plane11. Bizon do sell this little HDMI dongle so once attached, it fools the card into thinking an external monitor is attached so I’ll be trying that out. The unit doesn’t work out of the box for TB2 devices and requires a bit of work all software wise, instructions very easy to carry out, if stuck then Bizon provides email support until you’re up and running guaranteed. I’ve been through that process with them and they’re absolutely super when it comes to support.

Can you take ioregistry shot when you use this sir? Thank you! I want take a look how apple handles when this external gpu is used to hw acceleration when unplugged to any displays. P.S. for gaming if no metal you are stuck very old OpenGL which sucks in performance if apps or games tries use all new stuff. Thx apple.

Quick Stupid Question - Will the Black Magic eGPU be worth it to give life back to the old 2015 MacBook pro 15inch? Apparently you can use the TB3 TO TB2 CABLE and be able to go into terminal and disable the security setting that stop the use of external eGPU's to your apple mac?

Just now switching to a eGPU for my mac mini 2018 and so happy this works with both windows and mac os running off a mac. Now that they are a bit more affordable and can upgrade to the pro one.

I think you might want to test your benchmarks again since Apple's last update from yesterday. It affects all the 2018 Macbook pros (including the 13 inch models). You might see that performance has improved.

That has no impact on the eGPU’s. That fixes the voltage regulator controller issue that caused the CPU to receive more power than it needed and hence throttle that much.

Oh yes, I understand. But I'm talking about your benchmarks that exclude the eGPU such as your export time etc. Your 45 min result could be better due to the update to the VRM/thermal management. I should've specified. Great video! I agree with you about avoiding the purchase of the Blackmagic eGPU, I could see the price being justified IF it were upgradeable.

Hi Daniel, that was indeed an in depth review of the eGPU and a really good one. However I have one suggestion that I would be very curious to see the result of it: On my MacBook Pro Mid 2014, I’m using an app called “gfxCardStatus” which not only tells me which GPU of the two is used (integrated or the nVidia) but it can also force Mac OS X to use any of the two. So would you mind trying that app instead of attaching a 5k display to the eGPU in order to force the Mac OS X to use it and see if that actually works as a solution? Would the app even have it in its list in the first place to select it? Keep up the high quality of your videos and greetings from Melbourne, Australia! :-)

I think the BlackMagic eGPU works properly with Davinci Resolve. So it is not just the benchmarking apps that support this eGPU. It's obvious that Resolve and the eGPU work since they both come from BlackMagic. Any change of a review of Davinci on you 13" with the Blackmagic eGPU?

thanks for the video. you mentioned this is only worth it for the 13" MacBook pro. I was interested in getting this GPU to use with 15" i9 and using it for the LG 34WK95U 34" 21:9 UltraWide 5K Nano IPS Monitor. photo and video editing. no video games. my intension is to set up for desktop at home. the razer core is $300 US and the ASUS radeon RX Vega 64 is $590 and that set up cant run thunderbolt to the monitor. your thoughts?

Too late... I had a bunch of Apple Reward points and nothing else to spend them on... and got a business discount... do I see some difference??? Yes! It looks cool next to my NAS and MacBook Pro desk docket... My question (a year later) Does FCPX 10.4.7 running in Catalina make better use of the eGPU when rendering? I dunno. How should I test it??

Thank you Daniel, very interesting. My only concern is how loud the razer core egpu is compared to the BlackMagic. The Razer core does not seem to have any USB connections unlike the Blackmagic. Do you think the Blackmagic egpu will work on native windows laptops? Are certain graphics cards required for use in the razer core if they are to work on MacOS? Ideally, I want a future proof (ish) egpu that supports both windows and mac laptops. Thanks again, was waiting for this one!

Thanks Daniel, this is very enlightening, you make understanding this stuff way easier for people like me that don't get this technology stuff so easily. Having that in mind I would like for you to give me some advice. The thing is that I'm a designer who focusses on interior design, and I work with 3D programs and rendering, and at home I have a late 21inch 2013 iMac, the "cheaper" end model and I can't run any of those programs with it. I recently learned about the eGPU and thought it would be a good idea to get one so that I wouldn't have to change my iMac, but nowhere in videos or internet sites do people mention how it would help with design programs, and I guess it is similar to gaming but I'm not sure. As I told you I'm not good at understanding very deeply on this subject, all I get is an idea of what I need, so if you could help me in any way I would be very thankful. Greetings from Colombia.

Brilliant job. Well done. Apple’s been dropping the ball with gamers big time. I’m still getting the Black Magic for aesthetic reasons, but I’m going to wait until they upgrade the card AND RESPONSIBLY ENABLE IT. Fortunately, like the throttling issue on the new i9 MacBook, this is almost certainly a software issue.

In Canada, can buy the Razer Core X eGPU box for $490, and a 580 card for about $300. So that's several hundred less AND upgradable.

Side note: You should probably use the display outputs on the eGPU for games. Your machine will prioritize the GPU which is assigned to your main display, especially on windows.

Very in depth video! In all honesty, I would have leaned more towards the Razer Core regardless if I didn't already have a built PC that I did a couple years ago. The idea of not being able to swap cards is an automatic do not buy right from the get go.. Terrible decision.

I need help. I'm not a computer expert. I'm a photographer and I own an iMac 27" 5K for Photoshop and Lightroom. May I connect the Razer Core X to my iMac to improve the performance??? Do I need an external screen with this eGPU or it is enough my iMac? Thanks in advance whoever answers my question.
