Yesterday, the power company in my area had to shut down the power for six hours due to construction (in fact, the power came back on in four hours). From that moment on, my 2019 MBP 16"/i9 had to be used in an extreme energy-saving way. I managed to get through those five hours by lowering the screen brightness, turning off the keyboard backlight completely, stopping meaningless internet activity, turning off a lot of background programs, and not playing music. I can't help but think that if I had been using the M1 or M2, I probably wouldn't have had to stress so much.

You are right. My 2012 intel with a brand new ifixit battery gets me about 5hrs of music with everything else off. The m1 pro can give me a useful 8hrs of mixed work or a few more hours of just music with all radios, backlights and background apps off. It's grief on the battery cycles though. Where I live we are up to 17hrs of power rationing per day and the charge cycles are piling up.

As a software engineer/IT professional, I have used Macs as much as possible for my professional needs. However, there are still some significant issues I face with my M1-based MBP that my previous Intel systems didn't have to deal with. For a long time, it was well known that the best Windows machine was a Mac - normally running on Bootcamp or even virtualized. OK, not always true but for my needs, it was great. All (or most) tools I needed were available for Mac and the few that were not, I could hop into Windows without issue. I could even run Linux -- all on the same system. With M1, it took over a year for many developer-centric tools to get ported over and many non-Apple tools still aren't supported - with some like VirtualBox, will never be supported. The kicker is that I really can't "just hop" into Windows anymore because there is no Bootcamp and virtualization only supports the ARM version of Windows (which really sucks). Yeah, I "could" run x86-64 emulation (qemu), but that is so painfully slow that it is not a viable option. What about Docker? Yeah, just in time for Docker to charge for Docker Desktop, it got ported over finally - except you have to use ARM versions of containers - while are fairly common, they aren't completely universal. Sure, I run into similar issues on my Pi, but that is a hobby/experimental/toy computer that is ultra cheap. I've had to make adjustments by switching to tools that work well on M1 (multipass vs vagrant) and keeping my PC for stuff that refuses to join the ARM revolution. With all that, I really do like my M1 MBP and I do see the power in the Apple Silicon system - but non-Apple software development is still somewhat lacking - even 2 years in. I expected some pain/waiting for the transition to happen, but at this point, I'm thinking everything that will make it over has already happened.

Maybe you have the knowledge but not the experience, but if you learned the hard during the previous architectures revolutions, you want to stick a couple of years with your old architecture because it would just disrupt your workflow with setups and waste of times, missing drivers, bugs and so on, the gain in speed is usually lost to adapting to the new ecosystem. And it will eventually make it there, first your leave the big boys do their own UAT at their own expenses, not on your time and professional output. So I'll get an M when that ecosystem is not a downgrade at more than 1 level, 1 screen really? I'll stick to my 16'' 2019, with 8cores and 32 gb I don't see the point of shelling so much money to then ending up back on the i9 because the difference is negligible, actually in some rendering programs like final cut M1 with 8-16gig of ram is a hog compared to an i9 with enough ram, apparently Ram still means something especially on a common one like ARM, not worth the hassle

We utilize Intel based iMacs (2020 27”) here in our recording studio. They are completely reliable, have no issues with all the hundreds of plugins we own, are very powerful and we have no issues tracking, mixing and mastering very large projects. One day, when our existing iMacs can no longer provide the power we need we will move on to Apple silicone computers…but we feel confident that we will be using our existing iMacs for at least a couple more years.

@Tech-geeky
@Tech-geeky 8 ай бұрын
That's what i'm getting at... plugin's will be less useful on M1 and therefor usually dictates the apps you can use as well. There is much better support there for Intel,. but may change, i don't see how... People that use plugin's that they no longer update, or your in the hands of developers for one reason, or another, chooses not to support M1 natively, allot of users will be running Rosetta 2 for (years) to come :) The number #1 reason is : not allot of support Developers go where the money is and there is much wider audience with Intel (PC or Intel Mac) than there are on M1/M2 chips... so, that dictates everything else. down the line. Performance and battery is really the only thing going for Apple silicon, but at what cost ?? People go there, then some back and say this doesn't work, and they "want it to work". Seems people jump the gun, which explains why there are soo many M1/M2 macs on the Apple Refurnished Store Apple knows there gonna be issues, and i guess there prepared to live with the consequences.

The M2 is not really a second gen product, it’s more like s upgrade like on older iPhones… The M2 is based on the same structure like the M1, you can say it’s just an overlocked M1 not really more… A real update would be the next chip which is then based on a new structure, this will maybe not bring really much more power but I think it will offers way more features…

There was quite a bit of hype around the ARM based Macs initially. All I can say is that I use a 2017 MacBook Pro (the middle model) and it still works great. True I did replace the battery and keyboard but other than that, it runs all of my software and quite a bit of that is Windows based. For folks running non-legacy software, the M1 Macs are great. For us IT consultants with one foot in the Windows world, the Intel Macs are much preferred.

I'm honestly very happy with my 16-core Mac Pro 2019. I knew this would be the right decision for me. Especially the fact that you can still upgrade it down the line. Truth be told, my GPU is the biggest bottleneck in my MP because i didn't really need a "beefy" GPU at the time as i'm working more with Logic Pro than i do with Final Cut Pro. However, even with simple things as having a lot of Chrome tabs open i can see the memory of my GPU go sky rocket! I already cleaned my Mac pro as well as i think that after a year it was time. Though there wasn't so many dust or anything so i was happy to see that my MP was pretty clean. For my new M1 Macbook Air though, i was really happy. I think Apple Silicon for laptop/iPad is absolutely the way to go. But i don't think it's really ready for heavy duty desktops. No, not even the Mac Studio. Which is a nice performer, but with the compatibility issues with some of the pro apps. I just don't think it's ready. Once the new Apple Silicon Mac Pro will be announced, that's when i believe we'll start to finally see the differences. I also hope that for the iPad pro, native pro apps like logic, Final Cut, etc... will finally be on the iPad Pro.

Great review, as usual. One qualifier: You *can* get multiple external displays for low-end Macs if you use DisplayLink connectors which can be had for as little as $100. So, you don't have to "spend another $2000" to get multiple external displays... you can do it for $100 - it's just not a native solution. Continued Success and I'm subscribed.

Yeah, I saw the title and I was like what is he talking about? It’s probably because around this time, AMD destroyed Intel with their Zen 3 chips so Intel fanboys were still seething over that. Simultaneously with Apple abandoning Intel because Intel Macs always performed like dogwater after a few updates. So Apple had enough and decided to essentially take the iPhone A14 and pump it with steroids and here we are. The M1 is literally almost triple the performance in multi-core and single core workloads against whatever the Intel offer was of that year. It was absolutely hysterical.

And I’ve realized that I can even play heavy games like Battlefield V with ultra details at 3k resolution for almost 100+ fps. I wasn’t expect such performance and stability with boot camp, really suprized. Only issue with gaming is the 60 hz imac display, fps games feels like laggy. But I got 34 inch 165 hz ultra wide as external monitor and gaming is damn smooth with it. Imac has saved me from building a separate pc as a casual gamer. I still use my 2019 Intel 13-inch MacBook Pro primarily for eGPU support and Bootcamp. Windows 11 22H2 works well and allows me to run my GUI Linux apps and Android apps alongside my Windows apps. I will never buy another MacBook due to the lack of intrinsic touch display and pen support. I did buy a M1 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2TB 5G with magic keyboard. But despite the fantastic hardware, iPad OS 16 turns it into a big white elephant, where I still need to carry around with it a Raspberry Pi 4 USB-C accessory to do all the computer things an iPad Pro can't do! The only thing Pro about the iPad Pro is its price! I recently bought a Microsoft Dev Kit 2023 when the Apple Mac Mini with M2 Pro processor failed to materialise this autumn. For £579 I got an incredibly quiet power efficient mini-PC with 32 GB RAM and 515 GB upgradable SSD. OK, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is no match for the M1 and M2 processors, but it still surprisingly good when running Windows arm64 binaries and performs just as well as the eighth gen Intel i7 processor in my MacBook Pro. I was surprised how many of the Windows's apps I use on a day to basis already have arm64 binaries, including Edge. And because Edge is based on Chrome, Edge installs and runs all my Google apps fine. And as with another Windows 11 computers, I can also run Linux GUI apps and Android apps. Even some of the emulators I use such as Dolphin and PPSSPP have arm64 binaries and run great. And with Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 and vcpkg now including arm64 support, you can recompile other source code and libraries into Windows arm64 binaries and DLLs. When I take this into account, plus spiralling costs, new high performance ARM processors in the pipeline for Windows laptops, and Apple's "Big Brother" mentality towards its customers, I find myself approaching a decision point. Do I stick with the Apple products and ecosystem, or transition away? Apple computing devices aren't going in the direction I want or need. Apple is still too focussed on getting its customers to buy lots of their hardware over providing a great software operating system wrap that allows them to fully maximise any one device's underlying performance and get excellent value for money, e.g. M series iPad Pros. I think the next 1 - 2 years could be testing time for Apple, and they may need to rethink their business model if they want to retain their customer base.

M1 is great but sucks at virtualization, Docker, and other OS support (Linux and Windows). As a software engineer, I get 3 hours of battery life when working on my MBP 14. I'm saddened that Apple are ignoring software engineers and refusing to modernize the developer experience on (and for) MacOS. As a gamer I get 4ish hours gaming over crossover. All in all, when push comes to shove, battery life is pretty similar to my Intel MacBook. Performance is better when running native workloads but overall it's been a net loss for my work and play

Yeah and dropping support for perfectly working Macs out there. In the WWDC 2023, after the announcement of MacOS Sonoma I was kinda disappointed at the fact that my maxed out 27 inch 2017 5K iMac isn't supported anymore. And I really don't think that hardware wise it's obsolete in 2023, I also had swapped it's spinning hard drive to a SSD but yeah apple being apple decided not to support it. And as for the MacBooks the oldest it supports are from 2018 so it means by next year it will be 2019 and after that boom! My maxed out 2019 16 inch MacBook pro will be a potato too :(

since early 2023, i have an 2018 mac mini with an i7 chip, an internal ssd with 1 terabyte and 32 gigabytes of ram. and for electronic musci production, this still works great and i don't see a point to switch to apple silicon. there are too many pieces of hard- and software i own being incompatible with silicon/arm. and there even are some plugins being incompatible with mac os, so having an option to use boot camp/windows is a must for my workflow (and there is also a saying "never change a running system". but i changed my system erly 2023 because my old system could not run anymore). currently, i am setting up an 16" macbook pro from 2019 with 32 gigabytes of ram, an ssd with 2 terabytes and an i9 chip for making music on the go. conclusing: i personally consider intel macs still better (as for now, one can never know what time is goin' to bring) (and no, it's not because i am an fanboy. i am saying that intel need to decrease the nanometres they produce their chips with). for just "consumers", an silicon chip might be all fine. but for people like me, using professional apps, i have following tip: just wait with buyin' a silicon-mac, even in 2023

Unified memory is extremely fast and efficient but has some drawbacks, and there is still merit in discreet memory. Modern Mac OS consumes about 4 GB of RAM on its own; if you have an 8 GB M1 chip, the computer's systems and components therefore have a much smaller share of the remaining RAM. While swap memory activity is fairly normal, my M1 Mac Mini engages in swap activity almost all the time with 8 GB. My 2012 MacBook Pro has 16 GB of RAM and a 1.5 GB Intel HD 4000 GPU. My 2013 Mac Pro has 16 GB of RAM and dual 2 GB AMD graphics cards. These computers almost never perform swap activity, as they have a huge amount of RAM dedicated to the CPU, and a big amount of memory unique to the GPUs.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5600x desktop and an M1 Pro 14 inch. The two processors are similar in benchmarking with the 5600x beating the M1 Pro by a bit. However, there is a huge difference in video editing and exporting. I use video studio on the desktop and scrolling though the video in the project line is trash. You have to sit there and let the software convert the video to lower resolution so you can scrub faster. However on the M1 Pro, no matter what software you use, scrubbing is instantaneous and smooth. It's amazing but I can't figure out why it's so good on the M1. The drive on the PC is an NVme so it's fast and the gpu is an rtx 3090. All of that power and floor space and this little laptop does video editing much better.

One of the programs that I use stopped working so I went to reinstall it on Ventura. Unfortunately it won't install. I did an upgrade install from Monterey to Ventura. So the program runs on Ventura but it won't install on it. This has happened in the past with this program and they eventually fix it but I would have to reinstall Monterey and all of my other software and either stay on Monterey or upgrade to Ventura and hope that the installation doesn't get hosed in the future. My solution was to just grab my Windows desktop to use next to my Mac Studio and that will be my solution until the software vendor fixes the installation problem. So sometimes you have an incompatibility problem cause by some component update - not really Apple's fault though. The Windows desktop is an i7-10700 with 128 GB of RAM and 3 TB SSD and a nice GPU so it's a nice system for being 3 years old but nowhere near as fast as the Mac Studio.

@@makegamemusic The date may be later than 2026. Both the intel macMini and Mac Pro are still being sold.

Your first one isn’t a hardware issue. It’s an artificial limitation imposed by configuration. You’re exactly right Apple wants more money for you using more than one monitor. It’s like Health, Watch and CarPlay not being on an iPad. It has nothing to do with hardware. If they were on the iPad I’d finally be rid of my Apple pocket brick (phone). I’d have no use for it. My watch would handle phone calls, and for everything else there’s FaceTime. I use an actual camera for video/photos.

Apple *became* this... True, its is like the Health system, but they've been in that business much longer, so we all got used to it.

I would NEVER use CleanMyMac. My dad had it on his machine and it was an absolute resource hog. And it was damn near impossible to delete the app from his machine.

just upgraded from an m1 to an m3 max and i can confirm that all of these problems with rosetta translation go away purely because of the raw power. I have the maxed out chip with 64gb of ram and absolutely nothing can make it choke it feels like lol

AutoCAD is bollox, they have a monopoly in the construction/design industry and I hate how little they care about their products. The fact that startups can make less buggy software is just ridiculous, CAD needs better competition

I use 2 external monitors in extended mode with M1 pro and it works flawlessly. One monitor connected to HDMI out and another using a type-c dock.

It would be great if you would highlight that Autodesk Maya still does not run on Apple Silicon after two years of waiting. The Mac VFX industry is being completely let down by Autodesk.
