I've owned the Zoom H6 for a few years and used it extensively to record live. However, it has another powerful feature that to date, I haven't tried: overdub mode. I explore using overdub mode to create a layered demo, covering the basic procedure to overdub, as well as a few less-intuitive tricks I found along the way.

Thanks for the video Cody very informative. How did you get the echo effect on the vocals? Was this done through the H6? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for watching! My final mix was done in Reaper, and it was at the DAW stage that I added the delay to the vocal. THe H6 does allow you to mix down any project to a stereo WAV or mp3, but doesn't have onboard effects beyond compression/limiting that I could find. If I were limited to only using the H6 with no DAW, I'd burn the effects in performance.

Very helpful video! I am thinking about importing external stereo file with a piece of a song demo onto H6 and overdub to it several vocal takes over and over in a loop-like mode, and then exporting the recorded takes onto a DAW for processing and mixing. The reason of that is to be able to record many takes of vocal ideas at any time, in any location, as the ideas come, and then comp them in a DAW. Is it possible to record in overdub mode several takes, on one or different tracks, without deleting the previously recorded takes? I could not find any answer to that question anywhere...... BTE, Reaper is my DAW of choice for many years after dumping Pro Tools.

... oh, I figured it out: it keeps the previous takes automatically. :)

Hi Cody, thanks so much. This is actually very cool because I don't like to use DAWs. Sorry for the naive question, as I am still new to this, but if one wanted to record 3 external synths (like an OP-1, OP-Z and another source), can one connect them all into the H6 and hear them simultaneously and also do a single live recording with all of them? Is this what they call multitrack recording? This is essentially the benefit and key strength of the H6? Thanks for your help
@CodyWeathers
@CodyWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay responding. It's a very interesting question. On the one hand, if what you were describing was a true live situation, you absolutely could record three inputs at once into the H6 (see my other Zoom H^ video for more details on these types of recording kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9Sdg6iQv7GdcXU.html ). But it begs a subtle question that I don't know the answer to for certain: if you wanted to record multiple inputs at once into the Zoom H6 and use solely the Zoom's input monitoring, how smooth would that experience be? I will have to put that to the test and report back to you, though I suspect it would work, I also can foresee wanting to control the monitor mix, and needing to explore how that might be done.

@@CodyWeathers Hi Cody, thanks for the reply. Yes I've seen that video of yours and it is quite convincing. Yes, I guess the input monitoring would crucial to ensure all layers of the tracks are aligned. I am guessing since the H6 is doing the monitoring for all the inputs, it should be smooth? Anyways, thanks for all your thoughts on this

@@CodyWeathers if you had an external mixer, and you monitor through the H6 zoom headphones this could work. I have a mixer as part of my live set up, so this could work for me. But thanks for the initial getting started with the multi tracking. Really helpful. No, I don't think you're crazy !

I apologize over dub is at 7:08. I had a hard time finding it. Simply under the title Project menu which can be seen at the top of LED screen. NOTE there are 10 TITLES one can scroll thru at top of LED screen. Again thanks for getting out this info. Now I may delve deeper into it. This is quite impressive what this ZOOM is able to do.

@CodyWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
You make a good point: that menu is very dense in a ticker-tape format. I get it: they were cramming a lot of features onto a VERY small screen, but it warrants mention.

Do you know if it is possible to import a track into the H6?
@CodyWeathers
@CodyWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. First instinct is no, since the playback interface expects a certain naming convention, but maybe if you tricked out the convention you could. I'll have to experiment with that.

Thanks to your video, I was able to learn the H6’s overdub capabilities easily. The xy mics are superb. I wish the unit was a little more flexible with input routing.. despite this, it performs flawlessly for my needs. Cheers

You really helped me out here. BTW is that an Epiphone violin bass?/ They weigh a ton. Plus I disliked the Horner sold it cheap. Sorry about my flurry of topics. I have ADHD . Also very impressed at your KZfaq production !
@CodyWeathers
@CodyWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That bass is actually a vintage MIJ Crestwood, fully hollow, very light. I also own an Epiphone Viola bass, which is the main bass I play in demos (short scale basses suit my small hands). I'm not a bassist by trade, and I'm not typically wearing the thing on my shoulder for hours on end, so I hadn't really thought about the weight, but you're right: the Epiphone is a little on the heavy side. Here's a comparison of the basses I did a while back: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nauIgpWZuaqxemg.html

As an aside, for the demo of this song, I was trying to use some of my vintage gear where possible: Slingerland drums, "Avedis" Zildjians, MIJ Teisco Tulip guitar. Here's a demo of the Tulip in isolation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e86efth1sLStiWg.html

So, I'd worked out how to overdub and then watched this video, which is great. But have I missed something? You can have six inputs, but you seem to be talking about recording more than six instruments and having more than six instruments in the final mix - is that right?
@CodyWeathers
@CodyWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. In addition to using it in the straightforward, prescribed manner, I set out to also test a hack I conceived of to use the "takes" feature that would normally preserve multiple attempts of the same element (e.g., vocal take 1, vocal take 2, etc...) to instead give me some extra fring real estate to record additional elements I didn't necessarily need to hear as part of the core mix. Because I ultimately planned to pull all of the wav files out and mix them in an external DAW, that made a certain amount of sense. I discuss my plan starting at 1:16 through about 4:00 as part of the recording plan. Ultimately it was successful (doumbek and keyboard are on the same track as separate takes), so definitely a technique you could use if the need arose.

So why are other reviews saying that the H6 can't overdub? I'm thinking of getting one, I'm excited...however one issue I'm reading about is the noise floor or peps are commenting about "buzzing", while others say it's a grounding issue is all or that it occurs when using the usb as for power (not battery) Thoughts, please!
@CodyWeathers
@CodyWeathers Жыл бұрын
I exclusively used the USB for power while recording and experienced no buzzing or other grounding issues. I'm not sure why reviews would say it *doesn't* overdub. I will say the menus aren't 100% intuitive, but everything is discoverable. Good luck with it!

@CodyWeathers It can overdub, but if you want to add into what has already been recorded instead of simply overwriting it, you can't use the channels you want to keep. There is a supposed way around that where you copy the original into other channels and then overdub.
