I love how Bourdain was never a snob. He’d eat at the highest end restaurants and he’d eat at Waffle House...zero judgement

What I loved most about Anthony Bourdain: he could be at a Michelin rated restaurant in Europe, a hut in Vietnam, or a suburban greasy spoon…but he approached every experience with the same respect, interest, passion, and appreciation.

When traveling on business, I had a bout of insomnia and decided to walk in an unfamiliar city. The only dining option open at the time was a Waffle House. There I saw a profound example of humanity. There was a waitress working the graveyard shift who had ability to provide childcare. She toiled away whilst here small child sat quietly in a corner booth with a coloring book. All the other employees took turns to look in on the her kid. Everyone working there was close. Her working a shift was either out of the need for a paycheck and/or deep sense of obligation to her colleagues. Regardless, it touch me deeply to see this little community of caring people. I tipped well and went back to my room and slept like a baby.

You know if Waffle House is closed during any kind of national disaster you get the hell out of that area

No matter what culture you belong to, sometimes you just can't beat good old cheap, inviting food like this. Here in America it's Waffle House, Soul Food, BBQ, or your favorite local diner. In Mexico it could be a tamale, street taco, or torta place. In an Asian country it could be a cheap dumpling or soup restaurant, etc., but there is always a wonderful, welcoming taste that appeals to just about everyone.

What’s awesome about Bourdain was how he appreciated food for how human of a thing it is, not for any of the restaurant’s ratings or nebulous signifiers like “authentic”. Waffle House is clearly something many people feel they have a connection to and there is joy in this shared feeling of it being a sanctuary destination for people when out late doing whatever.

I see this as the finest example of the brilliance of Anthony Bourdain. Scoring that music for this scene is the stuff of legends. RIP , Tony. You hit this one out of the park for me.

Two of my favorite chefs. I like Sean Brock, I like his understanding of, historical and cultural, and respect of Low Country cuisine, from a place my father grew up. I was gifted the opportunity to dine at Husk a few years ago for my birthday, wonderful present from the wife. I love Anthony Bourdain. He is a poet and spoke meaning into the sometimes meaningless places of a kitchen. The dishwashers, the line cooks, burning yourself, getting yelled at, your legs hurts, your arms hurt, you do too many drugs after work, you drink too much to wash it away with your proverbial fellow comrades in arms, you live another day to tell the tales. Contemplative, world-weary in his later days. Came so far from where he started, always learning. Troubled. His sudden death, without explanation from him, I still haven't gotten over it. He was a celebrity who didn't want to be one. He enjoyed the simple but good, the warmth of dishes best made by someone's grandmother. I don't think there will be another Bourdain, they don't make those anymore.

The thing I like about Waffle House is there’s no judgment. My friends and I stopped by Waffle House coming back from a competition and we were in sports coat, slacks and dress shirts. We walked and and took a seat and it was almost empty and the waitress says where we were looking like a million bucks and we explained our competition. She asked us if we won and unfortunately we got 3rd place but she still gave us all a free waffle of our choice. A homeless man who has nothing but a tank top and shorts on and the president of the US can walk in their and still receive the same hospitality

This was exactly why Bourdain made his mark in the culinary world. Here was a man that had travelled the globe and sampled some of the finest cuisine known to man. And yet, he was more than willing to eat at a down-home blue collar eatery. It was that contagious love for food that made a mark on his audience.

I'm heartbroken. I have my job in a kitchen because of this guy. I'm in a good place with a good paying job because of him. Yes Chef Thank you Chef Rest in peace chef.

I was moving house, and my journey had brought me from Alabama to Mississippi. This Northern Yankee had only heard of the Waffle House in jokes and speech that wasn’t exactly reverential. I stepped in, looking like a total virgin, hoping I wouldn’t get shot or at least robbed. I came out a changed man for the better after tasting those waffles and hash browns.

He was such a calming presence and he never took himself too seriously, rest easy Anthony!

I love that when he said tasting menu, star with the pecan waffle, the theme song for Chef's Table starts to play, lol well played CNN.

This was one of my favorite episodes. He didn't care if he ate at a 3 star Michelin restaurant, had noodles with the President, or ate a tasting menu at the waffle house with a fellow chef. Discovered him way too late. As a tribute and toast to Tony I did a "BOURDAIN DAY 2021 Tribute Tour" in London this year, full 40 minute episode on my channel. Less a "where he went/what he did" in London, more exploring and trying NEW things. Paying my respects and hoping to honour his memory by entertaining not only myself, but other fans. Fellow travellers, this is what you need.

It will soon be 5 years since Anthony left us and I still get choked up. Although this was a short video, it still got me teary eyed. Even though I never knew nor met him, it still feels like the loss of a close friend to me. When I make it over the rainbow, maybe I'll bump into him and see what kind of conversation pops up. You are sorely missed mon ami.

What’s hilarious about Anthony’s last comment is that at the Culinary Institute of America (the school he graduated from) we recently took down a building sized banner of Thomas Keller (head chef of the French laundry) and replaced it with a commemorative banner for Anthony Bourdain. We also dedicated the main hall of the culinary building to him.

How the fck can you miss someone you've never meet in your life? Yet, I do miss Mr. Bourdain. While working as host at a popular downtown Chicago restaurant, I read Kitchen Confidential and it inspired me to attend culinary college. Some of the work values highlighted in that book I unknowingly adopted as my own, having read it five times. Watching him travel the world, exploring not only the food of foreign people but their culture and their hearts helped me see him as a humanitarian. Humanitarian? Fck yes! He introduce us to soooooo many different countries and their everyday people, while high lighting how food is the common thread that connects us all together. Dam I miss that dude!!!!!

The beauty of Waffle House is that for a lot of the tables the waitstaff doesn’t even have to leave the kitchen/prep area to take your order. They even deliver your food over a short walk next to the table.

I love the video. On my first trip stateside, I was tired and hungry, and I was welcomed with generosity and open arms. It was also my first "diner" experience (not sure if its considered a diner, though.) The staff became family in my short time there, taking great delight in valiantly trying to teach me how to order like a local. Still as vivid as yesterday, more than a decade hence. :)

I miss you Anthony. Your orator skills inspire me, including your insatiable desire to seek foods across the planet and closer to home. Never forgotten.

Anthony Bourdain is a big reason why I started caring about WHAT I was eating. His shows were always on as soon as I got home from middle school, No Reservations, and Parts Unknown were always my go to shows. He always had fun, he always respected his guests as much as their opinions differed, and was always appreciative of the food he was presented with. This man, is a role model, hands down.

To give you an idea about how iconic Waffle House is, they finally had to start selling their coffee mugs because so many people were stealing them from their locations. People talk about the obsession with In-N-Out, Waffle House inspires similar feelings. I know people that live where there isn't a Waffle House that if they are traveling anywhere near one, they'll go out of their way to go to it. I have some friends in California that usually head East once a year to visit family in Kentucky and most of their meals are at Waffle House. I have some Canadian friends that traveled to Myrtle Beach several years ago and ate at least one meal a day at Waffle House. If I were to move from the South, I would have to say that other than my local craft breweries, the only thing I would truly miss would be Waffle House (assuming I moved to a part of the country in which the chain does not have locations).

My grandmother still laughs about me proclaiming Waffle House to be the best food I've ever tasted, with much emotion, as a kid. It was Christmas, no where else was open and we'd been driving for hours looking for a place.

I remember watching an episode of Anthony, at first ,then i watched some more episodes. And now i miss them, it aint the same.

I went back home for Mardi Gras weekend in Eunice La and got chance to meet Anthony , doing a segment for CNN that was from a promise he made from the Travel Channel show . He seemed genuine and sincere , natural charisma for people and our different cultures . God Bless this man … true original RIP .

Lived in Georgia for almost 4 years during my time in the military. Back in California now. Two things I miss the most from back there are the gas prices and Waffle House. Place was always there for me if I was starving at 2am with nothing to eat in the fridge.

First ever book i bought was year 2000, and it was kitchen confidential... i was mesmorized by it. Everywhere i travel, i do my regular "has Anthony Bourdain been there?"-- and i visit all those places. If its good for him, then its good for me. I have traced his steps in New York, Los Angeles, Rome, Sicily, London, Prague, Stockholm and Istanbul. He has given me such memories. He has shown me what to look for when traveling, what places to visit. I have went from goint to restaurants to searching out these lokal hole in the wall places in back alleys. I wont say "reast in peace" since he never rested, he had a mind that was constantly travelling. Mr Bourdain, thank you for the memories and food... hope to break bread with you where ever you are.

I always tell them I want my hashbrowns " flipped flopped swept and mopped " and when they laugh and say " what?" I just tell them to order their favorite dish and I will see if they have good taste. Actually, I tell a lot of places to make me something they would make for themselves. It's always something new and I have never been disappointed.

I could listen to him talk about anything, described in great detail... Literally anything. He had a way with words.
