The man was so legitimately happy to be there at that Oyster bar. That's the reason we all loved him so much. Anyone can be a great writer and personality, but Tony lived it. He was authentic. I miss him.

@Lazar MMA alcohol is one of the most potent depression causing agents in the world, next to benzodiazepines, hence alcohol being able to induce suicide. We are just biological machines after all. I take your point though, yes there is a viscous cycle here.

I grew up one town over from his hometown, but found myself in San Francisco for my first job out of school. I went to Swan Oyster Depot my first and last day in that city. On my last day I thanked the guy behind the counter for the great food and mentioned I only discovered the place thanks to Tony Bourdain. The guy’s face immediately lit up to pure joy at the bare mention of his name and we just shot the shit for a few minutes before I headed on my way. It’s a sacred place if you ask me

It still breaks my heart every single day that that man is not with us anymore. He had such a love and zest for life that it was contagious. My love of food and travel. Became more apparent because of him. And yes living in San Francisco being a native San Franciscan. I can absolutely relay and he's right it has changed so much in the last 15-20 years that it's heartbreaking and I don't think that Anthony would recognize it. Now. But Swan Oyster Bar and Tonga room are definitely two of the places that are still intact still part of what I know as San Francisco and love about San Francisco.
