I just received my Full Frame ZYoptics Zhongyi Mitakon 20mm f/2.0 4.5X Super Macro Lens, so here is my unboxing and a test shot. So far, I'm pretty impressed. I still need to do a bunch of testing to see what the optimal settings are to get a sharp image... but first impressions are pretty positive.

Canon WAY back in the day had high-magnification macro lenses that were quite small like the front element that had an aperture control on the front. It looked much like a microscope element. It only worked with extension tubes. This looks like a similar design, but with the extension tube and mount included. I've used it with an adapter for my DSLR and tubes, and had to use it on a rail and using focus stacking. It's was cool. This looks like a great alternative since those are hard to find and require adapters for modern lenses.

I'm guessing that diffraction at f16 is what is to blame for the relatively soft image when zoomed in at 100%, but because you're getting so much detail, it cleans up with a bit of sharpening. Plus, since the lens has such an amazing macro reproduction, one is unlikely to crop the images much, meaning you'll never have to really show anyone your photos on the web at 100%. I'd be curious to see if you've found this to be true since you've posted this video. Thanks for making it!

He missed the focus. Add that to the fact that he doesn't know how to use the focus ring on a macro lens (you don't), leads me to believe he's not using a focusing rail.

It seems diffraction creeps in quite early, at f8 it is vert soft compared to 2.8 or 5.6

So, this is basically a reversed lense? I'm guessing that's the reason why the front element is so small
@ako9212
@ako9212 4 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Flores V. Yeah. I know this comment is 2 years old but I find it impressive that Mitakon was able to take a simple concept and make an affordable lens based on the idea of reverse lens mount rings, so you don’t have to risk damaging the rear element on your nice lenses but still get crazy results.

Do you have any stacked images to shage? DOF gets smaller and smaller as magnification increases (I often shoot with microscope objectives and often dealing with microns of focus). Increasing f-stop to compensate is going to give you softening, aberration, etc. Shoot wide open and stack :)
@dugggins
@dugggins 6 жыл бұрын
Wide open is F2, that's a LOT of stacking. You'd need a machine to do that.

Extreme macro lenses are something that have interested me for a while although being a Sony a-mount user, the amount of options are limited really (especially when just considering "out of the box" ready-use lenses and the accessories that are available. Can anyone confirm if this lens can focus to infinity or if its just a dedicated ultra close-focus 4x macro lens?

I have this lens and know that f16 causes horrible diffraction. f2.8 is about the largest f stop that can be used without diffraction, and about 16 micron movement increments for focus stacking.

No, this is a strict macro lens. It doesn't have a focus ring. Maximum distance for objects are some centimeters.

Thanks for answering this question which after hearing about this lens today was something I was going to ask myself. It would be nice to be able to use the lens for something else other than ultra-macro but its a speciality piece I guess, as much as the old Minolta 1x-3x was (which was more like a microscope for lab use).

Where does one get subjects to shoot with this lens, like the spider you used in the video? Lenses like this can be cool, but live spiders (or other bugs) won't generally let you get that close to focus.
@mike0rr
@mike0rr 6 жыл бұрын
Spiders usually will, you just have to play with them a bit. Bees and what not have always been pretty rough for me outside of a lucky shot.
@dugggins

Some bugs will just sit there, but a lot of people use dead bugs for super and ultra macro.
@mike0rr
@mike0rr 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think its typical for people to use dead bugs. There's a lot of weird things that happen with dead ones. Like this spiders eyes are very odd looking. Noticed this when I shot one of my own spiders that had died. Dead bugs also tend to get very dirty and dusty pretty quick. I have heard that some people will put bugs in the refrigerator for a few minuets to slow them down but really, it's just best to get the right lens for the right bug. I get pretty close to most bugs with my 100mm Tokina.
@fretless05
@fretless05 6 жыл бұрын
I've seen pictures at high magnification that xsay they're stacked images using dozens of shots. I can't believe most bugs would let you set up a focus rail and take 50 shots of it without moving. I have some luck with stacking shots of inanimate objects, but can't figure out how they get such great shots of insects.
@mike0rr
@mike0rr 6 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised. Some of the best shots I've seen are spiders out in the wild. You don't need as many stacks as you would think either.

if you are professional you should understand that on f16 the quality of image is complete rubbish as there is a huge difraction, if the lens has such an option try maybe f7.1 or similar...sharpness will be 3x better. And then you can do some focus stacking in Zerene..
@dugggins
@dugggins 6 жыл бұрын
F16 is very common for Macro. F7.1 is such a shallow sliver on most objects, it's useless. You know how bokeh works? You get really close to the lens, you get bokeh, even at higher apertures. This lens, you're centimeters from the object. It has an extremely shallow depth of field. Also, as a professional, you should know that lenses are sharp at different apertures, and there are a lot of lenses that are very sharp at f16.
