Most people in the 3D printing or hobby machining world probably don't have use for an actual sketch. It's very useful when trying to communicate a part to another party though, obviously. Plus how cool is it to have a folder full of sketches of things you've made?

for 1/8" try this: 0 flute, 10k RPM, 65 IPM, 0.005 DOC for 1/4" try this: 0 flute, 10k RPM, 65 IPM, 0.01 DOC ramp up the IPM and test up to 80+ instead of going with a more aggressive DOC. S3 isn't very rigid from my experience it doesn't like taking large DOC, especially on a 1/8" end mill.

Do you have a video of the CAM steps for your scales?
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios 5 ай бұрын
I don't. It would have been a really long video though. There was a bunch of iterations. Basically, a surface pass for overall height. Then a 2D contour halfway down. Then bores and counter bores. Then edge chamfer, then a final 2D contour to cut them out. Most everything was 90ipm at 15k rpm and a 0.020" stepdown

I've made knives before. When I make the miniatures, I have to kind of disconnect from that and realize real world design considerations don't matter. I've got a new video being edited right now that kind of drives that point home as it's a very impractical project.

The reason it will mark steel but not Aluminium is related to its ability to conduct heat, Steel (including stainless) is not a great conductor of heat so the heat remains concentrated where the laser hits, Aluminium is somewhere between 8 and 10 times better at conducting heat away
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios Жыл бұрын
That's correct. The other half of it is the aluminum oxide. The wavelengths of the laser can't seem to make it through the oxide layer, which forms near instantly on bare aluminum surfaces.

Ah yeah. Mine is an older design. There's no spring. It's just a screw with some knurling on the head and then threaded in. There's a guy online that sells a replacement/upgrade that I'm going to look into once I decide to upgrade to limit switches on the x and y axis.

I have been noticing a lot of videos only use LightBurn with a XTool laser engraver. Is it better than the XTool software and worth spending the money for the software?
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios Жыл бұрын
Better is subjective. The XTool software is fine to get started with and has no problems with simple projects. The moment any kind of complexity is added, Lightburn starts to shine. It's initially harder to set up and it can be overwhelming but the amount of features give you the ability to do just about anything you can come up with. Whether it's worth it or not depends on what you plan to do with your machine.

I've honestly been wanting to get into trying to make a set of scales for my Civivi Elementum, but didn't know where to start or if the Shapeoko would be a good tool for it. Thanks for the video! Now to either find a SVG of the scales or just make one myself!
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios Жыл бұрын
Shapeoko can definitely handle it depending on which material you intend to use. It required quite a bit of trial and error to get the speeds and feeds dialed in for G10. I even made an aluminum set (which is another video on my channel) which turned out okay and would've been perfect if I'd had another piece of material to experiment with. As for an SVG, take a picture of the current scales and trace them. If you include a scale in your picture, you can get them pretty darn close to actual size from there and then scale your SVG to fit, if that makes sense.
@CreatedWorkshop
@CreatedWorkshop Жыл бұрын
@@spacegoonstudios All great ideas! I'd use wood (I love the way wood scales work) so my speeds and feeds should already be dialed in there, and I'll just have to figure out the toolpathing! Thanks for the tips! I've got Fusion like you used, though I hate doing toolpathing in fusion😂 I'll probably work out the design within Fusion and then move over to whatever CAD/CAM program I'm using at the time (I switch often...I need to just find one and stick to it)

@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios Жыл бұрын
Some people do cut them by hand. In order to produce as many as we needed, it had to be done this way. The main advantage is that each set is identical though, which means that a replacement set in another color will fit the blade just the same as the original set. Check out Makers Knives on Instagram to see the finished product.

how is it machining g10 with this cnc?
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios Жыл бұрын
It's very doable. Lots of trial and error involved though, as far as feeds and speeds are concerned. And, it is very hard on the tools so you have to replace them fairly often. Whatever you get into, just make sure your dust collection is on point. You don't want to breathe G10.

Take a look at O-flute end mills (single flute) for cutting aluminum. Better chip load control with router cnc, combo that with your VFD spindle, you could do really well. I use O-flutes (1/8", 1/4", 2.5mm) with my 1-1/2hp DeWalt router and have been successful with 6061 up to 3/8 thick so far running contours, adaptive, and bores.
@spacegoonstudios
@spacegoonstudios 2 жыл бұрын
I've seen mention of 0-flute. I'll have to give one a try the next time I get my hangs on a slab of aluminum. I think my problem was that when I told Fusion to ramp... it did the whole pass ramping instead of entering with a ramp to 0.010" and staying at that depth. So by the time I finished a contour pass, it was probably trying to take a 60 thou chip.
