I took a variety of different materials and threw them under my XTool D1 Diode Laser to see if I could cut, mark, or etch them. The settings I used are conveniently within the video.
If you have any suggestions for other materials you'd like to see please don't hesitate to let me know. If you'd like me to fiddle with the settings more and really try to force some of these to work, also let me know. Basically, let me know whatever you think
And finally, please subscribe. Watching that number go up really motivates me to continue doing whacky things like this. And, you'll be among the first to know when a new project lands!

The reason it will mark steel but not Aluminium is related to its ability to conduct heat, Steel (including stainless) is not a great conductor of heat so the heat remains concentrated where the laser hits, Aluminium is somewhere between 8 and 10 times better at conducting heat away

That's correct. The other half of it is the aluminum oxide. The wavelengths of the laser can't seem to make it through the oxide layer, which forms near instantly on bare aluminum surfaces.

You can engrave/mark clear acrylic there's lots of different ways to do it so just search it and see which works best for you...the popping was probably micro fractures a sign to turn your settings down 😉

I've messed with that head and dovetail a few times, mostly to check if the thumb screw has damaged the soft metal enough to cause an issue. Nothing has really helped too much and when I get the time I'm going to rework the whole thing.

Mine wouldn't tighten at all but had seen on another channel that it was a spring loaded knob . Hope you get it worked out, that would be really annoying

Ah yeah. Mine is an older design. There's no spring. It's just a screw with some knurling on the head and then threaded in. There's a guy online that sells a replacement/upgrade that I'm going to look into once I decide to upgrade to limit switches on the x and y axis.
