I began the ThriveDX (HackerU 6 month bootcamp) course around June and through research and after many other people basically corroborating what you're saying, ive started the process of cancelling it. Maybe ill try my luck at Western Gov or software dev again, but i just wanted to thank you for opening my eyes

Computer parts are very valuable and then networks. If someone doesn’t understand basic networking then they will really struggle in this field. Network+ then CCNA is my recommended roadmap for someone new, with network+ you have a chance of getting help desk role then you can study for your CCNA. Don’t do any cybersecurity certs before these

This was pretty similar to my roadmap. 2018 a senior in high school I started off as a hardware computer technician did that for couple years then got a NOC T1 job at large ISP (glorified customer service). Took me about 4-5 years while going to university and getting certs to get into a soc analyst role. Journey was fun though, maybe it won’t take the average person that long but you’re correct sir cannot skip the basics

Your bar is definitely too high. Security research is insanely broad and you can't possibly know everything. The expectation is that obviously if you dont know something you should learn it for the future. I doubt most people probably know what a channel file is 😂. Also I'm 99% certain the researcher youre referring to is John Hammond
@honestduane
@honestduane 2 сағат бұрын
If my bar is too high it's because I've worked with some of the best people in the world at Microsoft and that was the bar that we all kept ourselves to. I love the idea of keeping things going in terms of constantly learning and constantly updating yourself, but honestly you should understand the entire process and you should totally understand how your software reaches customers, and if you don't have a basic knowledge of how that happens, then I wouldn't consider any dev to lack competence in the job :/ Its not hard to ask your team "how do customers get our code? How do we release to prod?" and honestly, I expect devs to be informed and be a part of that process, as a prerequisite to doing their job well.

i did security research for a while and i know the bucket is huge. There will always be gaps in a researcher's knowledge. It is a fundamental expectation that the researcher will be able to learn these gaps well enough to share and explain in their research. The reporting in tech does not require a level of expertise that is associated with a researcher. i don't know what a channel file is, but also i don't make tech reporting. i did research in obfuscated compilers, secure voting systems, static code analysis, and binary decompilation. I know that when I read something that I don't understand, I'm going to share about it that I need to hunker down and get intimate with the data.

Hey man, thanks for posting these golden nuggets of wisdom. I graduated HS in 2015 and got into college for CS. Fast forward to 2018 I dropped out because I was not an active learner and I solely depended on the teachers to teach me the material. Currently, I have some certs and work in IT. I've been debating on finishing my degree in CS and having watched this video just reaffirmed my notion to finish what I started. You've just gained a sub. Thank you once again.

I’m employed and have been a dev for 25+ years. I have to get out of my job due to stress and the market looks so bad it doesn’t seem worth it to stay in the field. 100s of applicants with lots of experienced people applying for jobs. Even if you have experience it seems there is very little chance to be hired. Time to freelance or start a KZfaq channel. I hate to say it, hope I’m wrong, but tech just looks like a really bad field right now. Either that or people are over blowing this. When I start looking I’ll find out.

I dont really agree with having to do some job first in order to succeed in cybersec. In my opinion you can do those paralely. Like you find something you want to do security in for example like learning to hack smb, so you go learn how it works and then you do security of smb and so on and so on. At least that's how I like to do it. Chopping it down to small pieces. But I am strong believer that you have to know how something works before you can do good job and do security around that thing. Definitely, without knowing how to move around terminal and not knowing anything other than turning computer on and off - you will be hopeless. But I don't think you have to have full career in something different than security and only joining after that. Again, knowing how things work is essential and without that you will do shitty job. Would love to hear other opinions though:)

Everything you said was true but cybersecurity should have a separate career path than IT or software development. I don’t think you should need to understand multiple programming languages to be a soc analyst 1. The career should start at substantially more IT fundamentals and packet analysis etc.

Good explanation. To me, it is really frustrating to see that politicians and regulators try to roll out these standards without any deeper understanding. I don't like the OAuth 2.0 approach; I think it is just stupid for three reasons, and I'd like to hear your points on that. 1) Centralized location that does the AUTH logic. Great place to attack, no? 2) Kinda unnecessary? I can use multi-factor authentication and I am going to be much safer, no? Especially when I have to use my phone, e.g., with biometrics... 3) Loss of control. I AM NOT AUTH. So how do I make sure that AUTH is according to MY standards? How do I make sure AUTH has my best interest in mind?
@honestduane
@honestduane 4 күн бұрын
Skill issue on your part, friend. Your "reasons" are exactly why its better. If you want auth control you can dictate how OAuth2 is done, its a protocol, not an implementation.

I tried skipping IT/SWE to go into DevOps, but never ended up getting any opportunities. Now after experience in Help Desk and becoming an IT Specialist/Sys Admin learning to admin and learning the computer system, kernel, command line and foundational Cloud and Programming knowledge I’m now well equipped and transitioning into a Cloud Engineer role. It took me over a year, but I’ve also been building computer and troubleshooting for fun for years. Definitely would’ve bombed my technical interviews if I never built that foundation.

A lot of this type of talk is very common in my field of product marketing. It isn't an entry level role. Most common for MBB consultants to transfer to PMM. Otherwise, many years of exp. But, despite all that I was still able to do it. Yes, very rare, you shouldnt bank on it, but its possible. If you cant put together a computer and get it on the network, it doesnt mean the field isnt for you. It just means you need to learn how to do it, just like anyone else.

I am curious about your attitude towards developers spending time on using bare-metal tools. Do you think it is valuable for a software developer to spend time on learning VIM and configuring Gentoo on your daily-driver devices, or you treat is as a waste of time? I am asking because I find it extremely developing to know things from absolute scratch, but it is discouraging when the tools used by modern developers are so sophisticated and skip those basics. I am also curious why do you use the common tools like Windows and VS Code, when you have so much experience. Is it because you find it a waste of time to configure things you do not currently need? Also, have you ever considered Computer Science Academia? In your opinion, is the private sector better for working in research topics in IT?
