The twisted ones is not folk. It is not horror. And it is not good. Any atmosphere the author could have created is obliterated by the constant, inane, juvenile "wit". Truly one of the worst written novels I've ever read. The "author" is no doubt laughing all the way to the bank. Read the source material she pilfered, Arthur Machen's White People, instead. Or the more contemporary Starve Acre whose author can actually write.

Hello, thanks for your comment and recommendations. I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy "The Twisted Ones". It's not my favorite T Kingfisher novel but I do actually quite like how she includes a bit of humor in her stories. I'm fairly new to the horror genre, and folk horror subgenre, so I'm looking forward to reading more and figuring out what works for my reading taste.

The Galaxy and the Ground Within is so good! Such a good closer to that series, if it must be the end. If you haven't read them, the Monk & Robot books are a good pivot for a similar, but different, cozy feels by Becky Chambers. I may even love them even more, despite how short they are. The concept of drawing magic in Witch Hat Atelier sounds amazing, I struggle with manga and anime though, simply because so many series never know when to end, but I may look into. Hope your holiday was wonderful, it looks it!

I have to confess that the only Becky Chambers book I've read didn't do much for me at all, but I love Wylder's Hall. Salem's Lot is my favourite Stephen King book, although I confess I haven't read all that many of his... for reasons that are about to become plain. I actually love the novella length, and tend to avoid epic fantasy, and very long books. It may be an age thing. I can read ten good novellas to any one of Brandon Sanderson's, and I only have so much reading time left. 🙂 Another novella I highly recommend, if you want to read something by an author who really gets grief, is Sorrowmouth by Simon Avery.

Hello 😊 I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy Becky Chambers. She writes quite "cosy" sci-fi which I know isn't for everyone. I am looking forward to reading more King. I think my main issue with Salem's Lot was the pacing. Also, I knew it was a vampire story so any element of surprise was lost. Thank you for the novella recommendation! I think short books can really pack a punch when they are done well.

@@bibbidibobbidibooks In a way, I think Becky Chambers hit my partner, and I much the same way as J.K. Rowling, in that we've been reading SF/Fantasy since the 1960s. Rowling got hugely lucky in that she got picked up by the media, and introduced to thousands of people who hadn't been fantasy readers before. To them, Harry Potter was new, and exciting. To us old folks there wasn't an original idea in the books, and it read like mish-mash of ideas that were done better by much better writers decades before. In Chamber's case, it was the fact thar people all over BookTube were raving about her wonderful characterisation, where we just saw stock character types that we'd seen over, and over before. It's not that either of them are bad writers, albeit Rowling has since revealed herself to be problematical in her beliefs, but they just don't quite match up to the hype. There are better books out there. Give Louise Carey's Inscape trilogy a look. Though, it would be unfair of me not to mention that Carey's distopian series is anything but cosy.

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. I love T Kingfisher as well and have enjoyed all those books you mentioned of hers. I really need to get to her most recent one- which I think is "Thornhedge" "Juniper and Thorn" sounds fantastic. I also really enjoy dark fairytale stories, and that sounds like it fits the bill! I've actually got "The Library at Mount Char" on my shelves and am planning to pick it up in Autumn. It sounds like we have similar reading taste! 📚🥰
