Yeah......I had to chuckle at your video, but do agree with you. When you first start mixing, we all had tendencies to "follow the rules of others", or rather, the majority rules folks. I still sometimes get confused at the "difference in terms" between Gain Staging and Static Mix. I've already gotten to the point where I "start mixing" after I have two tracks in my session! I mix and master my own songs. I also have Studio One pro (I have version 6 downloaded but still use 5), and I have used the Mixtool in the same way you showed. I also "cut up" my tracks into the song sections, so if I need a Rhythm Gtr a bit louder on a Bridge or Chorus, I adjust it in the section and not with a fader, affecting the whole track. I find that works best for me. PLUS when i occasionally create a Mixdown mp3, Studio One will alert me if I am clipping along the way. Andrew had a great line.....if it's too loud, turn the overall volume down! I have Andrew's Omni Channel Strip, and use it on the Drums Bus. I have EZDrummer and those grooves are so well recorded, I do not separate the components into separate tracks, so I use this plugin on the drums bus. Works great for me. Plus I can adjust drums' volume if I want in the mastering Project Page, using Izotope's ReBalance plugin, also for vocals and bass. I write country and CCM music, so I generally don't do or need Punch! Just good track balance.

Gain staging refers to the process of managing audio levels at each stage of the signal path to ensure optimal sound quality and prevent distortion or noise. That's essentially what Andrew describes in the interview. Granted, gain staging has become simplified with digital processing, but it’s still important when dealing with nonlinear processors. The reason your mix sounded different-aside from the fact that it was lower in volume and we often perceive louder as better (if you had level-matched the results, the differences would have been much harder to hear)-is that by lowering the level going into your mix bus chain, you changed the way your nonlinear processors, like compression or saturation, were affecting the signal. Technically, if you had compensated those levels within your mix bus processing, your mix would have sounded exactly the same. Ironically, that’s one of the principles of gain staging. 😄

Great Tips. Thanks a lot. I have a question for you. I was looking for a Filter to decide what MIDI Events will be copied from one Track to another. For example, I want to switch off the copy of Program Change or Control Change events (such as Sustain Pedal) and so on. Is there any Filter like that? If yes where is it? Many thanks in advance. Best regards. Paolo

It is fine for a seasoned engineer like Scheps to throw caution to the wind because he understands what is salvageable/reversible and what isn’t. The amount of young kids I meet trying to get into the studios I work at who see stuff like this and think they already know everything and/or think “none of that stuff really matters just go with feel” and then fuck things up irreversibly is mindblowing. Secondly, Finneas ain’t a mix engineer, or even an engineer at all, so who cares what his advice on that is? Songwriting maybe? But they’ve had two flops now since Billie’s second record - and everything he does without her sucks.
@ProducingInTheBox
@ProducingInTheBox 7 күн бұрын
3 things. 1: Digitally, nothing is irreversible. 2: We should absolutely allow young artists to mess things up. It’s all a part of learning. Unless they’re breaking equipment, let some songs get ruined. My biggest lessons were learned during these times. 3: I said his best music production advice. He’s responsible for billions and billions of streams and billions are not related to Billie at all. BUT. He engineered Grammy award winning albums from his home studio… so he’s absolutely worth listening to at some point for me. I like the way his stuff sounds. But if you don’t, that’s okay! Music is an art. By definition, not everyone should love it!

@@ProducingInTheBox Young kids thinking they know better while begging for internships is kind of a problem. They’re terrible studio employees because they’re not there to learn and grow, they just want the clout of working at a studio so they can posture as a producer. People like Scheps and all other professionals at his calibre worked hard for 10+ years as unrecognised assistants, students, uncredited producers to get the place they’re at and their experience allows them to break the rules in an informed way. So while to Andrew “not gain staging” may mean not painstakingly calibrating your inputs/outputs to be hitting at the perfect prescribed levels… to a beginner that ends up translating to every fader at -40dB with 10 mastering plugins putting gain back at the end - and they’ve interpreted his advice as “yeah fuck it, it doesn’t even matter!” It’s stupid to put advice like that out of context like that here.

As he describes it more and more he sounds more like he is completely biased and is finding every reason to glorify this DAW. The whole purchasing scheme sounds like a scammy vibe. This is not a video about a real opinion or candid opinion. Its a very very biased review.
@ProducingInTheBox
@ProducingInTheBox 7 күн бұрын
I pay for this daw with my own money. I use a LOT of other DAWs. I may be a bit biased because of how much I love this daw. But I will say, giving people more options to buy, as long as they don’t take options away, is always a good thing. I don’t see how getting a perpetual license for 1/3rd the price is a scam. But you do you man.

Most people wouldn't be able use a professional DAW like S1 without a subscription model though. You think buying a software outright for 350-400 dollars is normal for everyone? You could literally buy many useful hardware stuff for 400 dollars. Why do you want add-ons with your pro license? You have the software that's it. You didn't pay for add-ons. Did you?

The thresholds on the plugins aren't set for the new level. You can reduce level and compensate thresholds to get the same sound and the difference is just level. That's what thresholds are for; or am I missing something? Just curious not trolling. Like your content.
@ProducingInTheBox
@ProducingInTheBox 8 күн бұрын
You’re right! This concept also applies to multiple different plugins that don’t have thresholds! Also going into a compressor harder will sound different than just adjusting the threshold! Thank you for this comment!

24-bit 48kHz works great. Helps with CPU load, records the entire range of hearing and then some (22.05kHz), and has a really low noise floor, much lower than the -60dBFS of 16-bit.

The freaking unholy use of Autotune actually makes it really hard to hear much difference in compression. That being said, you can mix just anything with the stock plugins in Studio One. And the Fat channel is really good.

My main problem is finding a producer who actually listens to what I'm telling them when I ask for a revision. Idk if it's the program or what, but when I get done early with my studio session I like to take a hour with the producer to mix and master a song, but it seems everytime whoever bounces my song to me there's always something missing, like a missing a echo effect here or a missing dub. It drives me nuts!

From now on I am going to comment on an S1 video everytime the sack of shit crashes on me. Don't waste your money. An absolute buggy bag of tug. This crash I had just saved 10 mins before, did a shit load of tweaking 4 synths I had spent the past hour setting up as a base for, for sound design. Tweaked them all to get sounds spot on and it crashed. Literally the most important 10 minutes that I put a shit ton of effort in to to sculpt the sounds - gone. What is the arrangement? None, no stress on it, no midi, no audio, an empty page. Just 4 empty instrument tracks, no mixer effects, nothing. I could have opened over 30 of that VST in Reason and it wouldn't have crashed. I got S1 5 as a free upgrade because I bought S1 4 at the end of its life. 5 was unusable it crashed so often. All of my software is legal, this isn't any try before you buy shit causing a crash. All my plugins, DAW's, everything legit. So obviously with v5 being so bad I rolled back to v4. V4 still crashes all the time. If you don't hit save every minute, you're at risk of losing stuff. I tried v5 again after years thinking they probably fixed it by now but no. It's a mess still. What do we have now? V6. They left v4 a mess, v5 a big steaming mess and instead of fixing those they made v6. Not a chance in hell I am upgrading with them and I need some functions that aren't in the other versions. Now I need to find £300 so I can crossgrade to Cubase. So to save £200 I bought S1 at £300 instead of Cubase at £500, when I get money to crossgrade it's gonna have cost me £600. Should have just bought Cubase in the first place. Don't waste your money on Studio One. Pre Sonus do not give a shit about you. Go with a company that isn't going to sell you wank DAW. Presonus are dirty cash grabbing, rip off bastards.
