It seems that all of the cows enjoyed Rascals singing as they entered the barn. Esther, however didn't seem to want to give much of her feed to the poor dog. Oh well.

My first flight was in a Ford Tri-Motor back in the mid 1960's as part of a YMCA trip. It was Island Airlines, which had flights from Port Clinton Ohio to Put-In-Bay Island and the surrounding islands in Lake Erie. I believe they were the last commercial airline to use the Tri-Motor, closing its doors in 1985. They carried passengers, the mail, and supplies to the islands year round.

I love all you include in the videos. I remember giving the cows the boluses with the big "pill gun". Keith is too funny the way he doesn't smile while rattling off the words so quickly. When I was little, we had all the Surge bucket milkers with the surcingle straps over the cows back. Then switched to a pipeline.

I remember training calves to drink milk from a bucket. You would get them sucking on your fingers and then force their head down in the bucket of milk while still sucking on your fingers. Once they got a good taste of the milk, they became very enthusiastic about drinking the milk without your fingers. We'd have several calves in a pen (not a good practice) and they would be like a bunch of pigs trying to get to the buckets. One of the problems we had in the early stages of training was that the calves were too stupid to realize that they could not breathe under water, actually under milk. They would be blowing bubbles through their nose in the milk while drinking and lift up their heads out of the milk, choking and coughing. If a calf did not become an enthusiastic milk drinker, it usually meant it was sick. We trained the calves to drink out of buckets because it was quicker than waiting around for them to suck their meal through a nipple. After they quickly gulped down their meal, they would go to sucking on each others ears as well as other body parts, in a futile attempt to find a little more milk from somewhere. I think the nipple bottles are really a better, more natural way to feed the calves, although it takes longer. Once they get the idea and get with the program, you can hang the bottle on a gate or fence in one of those wire holders and not have to wait around holding the bottle while the calf procrastinates about drinking all her milk.

Do you give all of your cows calcium when they calve as a preventative measure? Or just the ones who have had symtoms in the past? Would a calcium additive to the feed ration of your pre-fresh cows be feasable?
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Сағат бұрын
We give to just about everyone as a preventative. The only exceptions would be the first-calf heifers, and even some of those have gotten boluses at freshening. All of them will suffer calcium deficiency at calving, but it's the ones at second, third, fourth, etc calves that will potentially really suffer. They do get a bit of calcium in their diets during the dry period. We have heard both ---- not too much calcium before calving and a little extra before calving.

True or False , grown cows do not have top front teeth and when feeding on grass they rip the grass not bite the grass. heard this on another farm channel and since we have never been around cows i do not know what true and whats BS. show me their mouth of a grown cow. oh yea are baby calf born with or without front teeth.

True. Cows don't have top teeth. Maybe that would be an interesting video for the farmer to make. He could show us how to determine a cow's age according to her teeth.

Mom and calf looked great! Why is it that a lot of animals won't go where you want them to? You were doing great and Lydia (hope I spelled that correctly) shows she knows what not to do, by skirting close to the barn when she came out. I have never been able to teach my husband how to help out (and that is only with cats, although they are a lot like Esther in some ways). He always moves the wrong way or makes noise just when he should be quiet, but at least he tries. We are going on 46 years now, so I think I'll keep him. Hope all is going well with mom and her newborn. Thanks for the video. Will be interested in name you give this one.

I love the gentle cows that I have created within our beef herd, but 😅 those docile girls are not easily driven a few of my girls will barely flinch forward even after applying electricity *I try to remember to keep a pocket full of protein cubes Cow Cakes.. Even if I don't give them any, they Smell them on me, know treats are handy, and they'll follow me anywhere😂 ...Immediately Post partum though, all bets are off 🤣 It's SILLY TIME!

You know it! Wacky hormones. We had a fresh heifer a few weeks ago that unfortunately didn't get trained to the atmosphere of the barn before she had her calf. It took her a few days to stay in the pasture with the cows where she belonged. She kept breaking out and coming back down to the barn. She settled down and has become one of the best heifers at finding her spot in the barn. Some of the more "experienced" (ahem, Elizabeth!) is still struggling after months...

The robots in all 6 feeder barns stopped working, along with their showers. Long Canada Day weekend here but animals need attention holiday or no holiday got the service crew fly in late afternoon Sunday. July marks 2 years since we started having nanny sows, now we have 2 barns and almost 400 sows that are semi retired and now are nanny's , now all runts born are taken and put into nanny sows which feed them with gallons of milk. our birth to weaning loss number went from 9% to now under 1% and we leave only 8 piglets for every sow that gives birth. We told grandfather and our father years and years back that we should try this but just like Mr Keith the were set in their ways and would not change. All issues now fixed but not sure if we will have all trucks filled this week. The Robots sort the hogs that are ready for market, a micro chip in their ear tells the robots who is ready. Another thing much improved was having micro chips in every pig on our farm, well weaned. we saved the life of thousands. every morning i get a print out or a red warning flash of very sick pigs. without this chances are the pig may die.

That was a great gift. Flying is something else. We had a friend that became a pilot and we got to go up with her in a small plane. That was before google earth and we got to see our house from above for the first time. There's a small airport near here that has air shows every so often. My husband said that they had a Tri-Motor Ford there when we went to it one time. Wonder if they come to Michigan?. Have also had a ride in a helicopter and that was a once in a lifetime for me too. Thanks for the ride and good luck to Wilson on getting his training.
