I am in the same boat as you were. Used to shoot film, then switched to digital and now want to go analog once more. Knowing what you know now, would you switch to the 645 first and then the 67, or go straight to the 67? I am looking at both cameras just like you once did! Refreshing videos, useful content and beautifully composed images, unlike most amateur videos on KZfaq. Just subscribed!

I associate color images with commercial work - black and white images with artwork.

I can’t help thinking that you like walls or glass behind and near your subjects. Something seemed a little flat in the Chicago images. The LA pictures have we more vibrancy. Maybe it’s the psychological difference in attitude of the two places. LA is a creative hub - Chicago is more of a commerce hub.

I almost exclusively shoot in black and white with my Mamiya 645. I enjoy how emotions are portrayed and conveyed in black and white photos, whether it’s a landscape, cityscape, or, most importantly, a portrait. It feels genuine and timeless to me. I’m loving your content and your page so far! Keep up the great work 😊

Why not plug the sync cable into your Profoto trigger? No need for the pocket wizards at all.

How do you what power level the light should have when shooting with film? With digital, we can see the images right away, but not with film.

Sam, so pleased that you've taken a shine to one of the best all-manual SLR's in the world - I own several bodies from the F series, but the FM & FM2 (n) are sublime. One point upon we will disagree; personally the old gentleman would have looked far better in monochrome - as well that the woman in the hat was shot in B & W; it's interesting, the propensity of so many photographers to use colour negative (or positive) film over monochromatic, whilst not surporising, is my antithesis. Less than one third of the World's population see only in B & W - the rest of us see polychromatically - an everyday perception that we tend to overlook (& take for granted); this is why tonal rendition from say, a roll of Ilford FP4 or HP5 to name but two, is so dynamic - look at how punchy shades of grey are as opposed to a multicoloured contemporary. Ultimately, the film stock you use is a personal choice - so I won't force your hand to use more of what I consider my favourite...take it easy, Best, Andrew 🙂

They torture tested these designs. They will out live the human race. Sorry you got fooled by the plasticky minolta X-700s. Minolta and Canon were competing over the most user friendly camera when Nikon was building a straightforward series of semi pro with the dependability of an F3. I love my Canon A-1 and it will always be my first camera. It's still ticking healthily, but my FM3a will go to the grave with me. Next I'm looking at an FM2n because the LEDs are a life saver. I also get the AE lock button on my FM3a so not having LEDs aren't the end of the world if I keep it in Aperture Priority. It works with a SB-800 flash too perfectly. You now need the DC 105mm f/2 now. Best lens in the world for film.

My wife is from Wuxi China and my first time visiting her hometown, we visited her old home which was also being torn down for a high rise. We were young and I never noticed that the photos I took at the time were very different from what I take now. I missed a lot of moments, such as her visiting her old home, but I am grateful I can go back, look at my photos from that trip and mentally recall these scenes. I can remember the way she felt that day, the food we ate, and our lives at the time. Great video, and great work!

Sounds like you like color. No need to shoot B&W. I like both but feel it is easier to develop and scan B&W than color.

I like trying out different cameras but prices being what they are I'm in the camp of match good optics with your film. I love my Holgas but film is too expensive to experiment. If you like the TLR experience then it is worth lookingat the Rolliflex.

@02:00 you say the Profoto flash needs to be brand specific for the trigger. This is ONLY true for the TTL remote but that is because the pin connectors are different for sony, nikon, canon etc (hardly protofoto fault). If you buy the plain Profoto Air Remote it is universal (works with all brands) and has PC sync cord. No one uses TTL at this level anyway... I use the profoto remote for Mamiya, hasselblad, leica etc and it is wireless because the remote attaches to the camera and the hot/cold shoe which triggers strobe. RZ67 & hasselblad have pc sync port and you plug a small cord into the Air Remote (has a pc sync port). You need the right attachments for Leica film cameras and Mr Leica on his youtube channel explains it, but any Impact cold shoe adapter with pc cable works (b&h). Sam, you bought the right profoto strobe but wrong remote trigger.

Look at yourself in your bw video! The contrast between your dark hair and pale smooth skin attracts my view and also the eyes and the lips gain attention. I think in color it would look more “average”. ❤🎉 Great video. 👏

My Minolta x700 was a $20 flea market find! It was in new condition and only needed a battery change! I recently got the scans back from my first roll of film. The pictures it produced were amazing! I used a Minolta 50mm 1.4 lens. My first roll of film was Kodak pro image 100.

Hi from Ireland , you are really comparing apples to oranges - holiday photos and you went with a plan to the book fair was it . Anyway the camera can make a difference too even to people posing they see a big old medium format or a canon 1v they feel important , and take you seriously . You slow down with the larger format and it costs more so maybe more considered . I think going with a plan even if it its to have no plan is important , the latter is prescribed when you are taking your work too seriously . Holiday snaps are just memories just because you are a photographer you are expecting magic too .

I understand you. I upgraded my 35mm cameras by getting APO lenses for them. Zeiss Otus 55 and 100. Then I also got apo lenses for my Leica. After that, I gave up medium format cuz those lenses are just so great. I sold all my medium format cameras 3 years ago. I only shoot film, no digital.

Keep it up. monochrome takes time to learn. Keep at it you will appreciate it over time. It took me a while. For your next challenge, try shooting slide film. Do NOT overexpose. For more saturation 1/3 underexposure at best. Over exposure flattens it out and makes it look bland. Your exposure has to be dead on. Good luck and keep up the good work. BTW congradulations on the 67II. I bought one brand new years ago. Great camera.

I think that you are correct that the film images we grew up have a deep psychological connection to our past. Thank you for creating and sharing about your childhood and birthplace in China. If you haven’t seen the film Fiddler on the Roof, you might like to watch it. It’s about generational change and cultural traditions. There is another great Swedish pair of films called The Emigrants and The New Land you might appreciate. Also check out the photographs by Zaharia Cusnir recently found in Moldova. He worked with an old Russian medium format the camera.

Check out; “What Shape Frame Dartmouth Math”. It’s a page on the Dartmouth College Mathematics Department site about picture composition and the format of images. Using Black and White vs Color is interesting. With all if the geometry in the environment humans inhabit; it helps to think about color, form and space when making pictures. Great video. Thank you for creating and posting this.

hi, I really did not understood, why you adjusted the aperture of the Hasselblad back and forth in order to have a brighter image on the viewfinder? You can set it slower but you will still see the fmax on your viewfinder. Am i missing something? Nice shooting by the way and for the HP500 is that much overexposing not a problem.
