Because I'm a seasonal-y reader the Shady Hollow series feels fallish- a good September mood read? Save the Alaska cyber crimes on for winter maybe? Worlds Fair series in Seattle seems late summerish too. Have you ever read Freddy the Detective series by Walter Brooks. Its older American middle grade but has subtle character studies that are HILARIOUS and plenty sophosticated. Most of the characters are anthropomorphic farm animals on Mr. Bean's...because- this gives you an excuse to start and maybe buy a new series! Lol😅

@ChautonaHavig
@ChautonaHavig 2 күн бұрын
I think you'd get a good feel for them if you checked out R. M. Ruiz at becauseficitonpodcast.com We have talked a lot about her books and you get a feel. It's positive cousin interactions (not perfect but for the most part they enjoy each other) as they go on these missions given them by God. Normally, I'd be bothered by God "giving a mission" outside the Word but since we're dealing with other fictional things (monsters etc) it just seems to me like showing kids how God, in His Word, has given us a mission, the "blessed object" is Armor of God, and the monsters are Satan and his minions--a way to see spiritual warfare in a way that clicks with kids. :)

For War and Peace, you should have said 'It's a complicated novel that has the Napoleonic Wars as a backdrop to events seen in the novel'. I only read War and Peace in French, but it's complicated. It's got a plot within a plot that is within a subplot that is one of a dozen other subplots that make up the major plot.

@@ChautonaHavig I feel that historical novels like this are better appreciated when you understand the historical events that inspired the book. Tolstoy's novel is more of a chore not because of it's length, but the detail to history, along with the complexities of a country at war and the characters and their separate stories doesn't exactly help matters. While I was reading War & Peace, I was doing a unit about the Napoleonic Wars and understanding more about Napoleon. It's definitely a book that you really have got to have a basic understanding of the history in order to appreciate. I read this book in French so it was separated into three separate tomes. Maybe this is the reason I loved it so much because the French publisher made it more manageable whereas the English is nearly 1,300 pages!

@@Eevie361 I don't remember being nearly as intimidated by the size as a kid as I do today. Probably because that's all I had to do all day. And I do remember asking my dad a LOT about the Napoleonic Wars now that you mention it. I think I learned more about those than I got from the book just because I asked. And interestingly enough, I remember that Dad compared and contrasted the Napoleonic Wars of the time with the War of 1812 in America. I just don't remember what those comparisons and contrasts were. LOL

Ah, Dracula is one of my favourite classics. It's definitely a staple of vampire literature. It's the classic story of good versus evil, in my opinion. It's really good and because it's told from the journals, letters, and newspaper clippings of other characters- it's not a unreliable narrator. It's absolutely brilliant.

Frankenstein is an amazing book. Highly recommend it. There's a funny little story with the origins of this book and it had been written when the author was a teenager at the time she wrote and published it. Frankenstein was actually written as part of a little competition she and other authors had between one another to see who could write the best horror story. It's more about a scientist who decided to play God and create life of his own accord and the fallout of that. It's a good book. Highly recommend reading. I also have read The Last Man by the author as well. It's a good example of early dystopian literature. It's actually a book set in the 21st century and not too many people know about it because people choose to remember Mary Shelley with Frankenstein.
