Thanks for being very thorough. One thing I do want to bring up, is this: We don't always remove the engine from the car. So turning the crank to bring back to top dead center would probably have to be done by turning the flywheel. Remove the starter and access it from there. With a large prytool it can be done and may take a few tries, it will get done. Appreciate you taking the time. Carlos

It would probably be a good idea to heat the drill bit you used with a torch to take the heat tempering out of it to make it tougher to break before you installed it.

Thanks for the video. I bought the replacement OCV seal from Twisted Tuning. However, my old OCV seal torn apart. The outer ring stuck on the valve cover. Any suggestion to get that sucker out?
@baxrok2.4 ай бұрын
Use a thin screwdriver, punch, or pick to knock it out from the inside. Or, bend down the edges from the top so you can grab it with pliers to pull it out. Be careful not to damage the valvecover to prevent leaks. You can do it!
@rj89544 ай бұрын
@@baxrok2. Knocking from the inside with a thin screwdriver worked beautifully! Thank you! In your video you also mentioned you see some oil on the middle valve cover bolts. Did you end up replacing those or simply changing the valve cover gasket resolved that problem for you as well?
@baxrok2.4 ай бұрын
@@rj8954 Just the gasket. I don't recall if it fixed the problem or not, it was quite a while ago.

this series is the best thing ever. i am on my way to part 4. i do have a question to anyone who may know. i am seeing statements that the Mazda 2.5 is an interference engine. from the videos it appears to not be. does anyone know for sure who has done this? also if it is not an interference engine and you loose a timing chain is it catastrophic?
@baxrok2.4 ай бұрын
This is an interference engine. I show it directly from the Mazda document in one of the videos.
@brenthann26234 ай бұрын
@@baxrok2. final question, how were you able to spin the crank over if the engine is interference. It seems like the pistons would contact valves on the intake or exhaust strokes?
@baxrok2.4 ай бұрын
@@brenthann2623 Well, that's exactly what timing is all about. If the timing is right, things don't hit each other!
@brenthann26234 ай бұрын
@@baxrok2. im sorry i was unclear. i was asking about you showing the crank being rotated while you had the timing plate in the cam shafts. you rotated the crank 360 to TDC and my confusion was thinking the pistons should have hit whatever valves were open when the crank turned.
@baxrok2.4 ай бұрын
@@brenthann2623 If the timing plate is holding the cams, that means that the crankshaft isn't locked down. That means that the crank can rotate, the chain won't move, but the crank and pistons will move. Once the timing plate is in the cams, they absolutely can not move and are in the right position to allow the pistons and crank to go 360.

Does the VVT actuator need to be aligned a certain way? There are so many videos out there where they mark the VVT actuator before removing it, to ensure it goes back in the same position on the cam. What is the significance of that? Also, should the VVT actuator be locked with pin when timing? Or floating?
@baxrok2.5 ай бұрын
Yes, the actuator needs to be in the right position because as it advances and retards the timing the cam lobes need to be in the right or expected spot relative to the actuators position. I don't have any experience with the VVT actuator. I never needed to mess with it at all. Also, when I did the timing, I didn't have to touch it. I don't know if it was locked or floating, whatever state or position that it was in at the time, was how I left it.

Presentation well understood. I am currently having timing issue with my Atenza. Had a damaged crankshaft pulley and one of my friends took the pulley out without setting it on TDC. Unfortunately, I wasn't unable to find a replacement pulley so i decided to weld the two pieces together. After all that, i had it fitted back on and started having problem starting.

So if the engine is still in the car.......how can I rotate the crankshaft to ensure the crank is still at TDC? The engine Im working on is in a 2015 Ford Fusion. Note: The oassenger axle does not have to be removed to install the timing peg.

Remove the starter and turn the flywheel to rotate the crankshaft.

Is it a fair statement to say that unless you take off the timing chain, you don't have to worry about bending the valves with the pistons while you go through the timing process with the 3 tools?
@baxrok2.7 ай бұрын
Unless the engine has jumped timing, I'd say yes. Even if you do remove the chain, just turning the crank by hand isn't going to bend a valve IMO. (Unless you go full gorilla and force it.) A piston might touch a valve as you're turning by hand but you'll know it right away.
