This breakdown, by far, is the best I've seen on the internet. I have seen Wicked the musical several times now. I consider myself a huge fan, and anxiously await the November premiere of the Wicked film. But you brilliantly breakdown this official trailer frame by frame. You do not skimp on any detail. I think you’re right that it’s the hat after she’s been melted but just like the show, I think this happens at the very start of the movie. The audience sees the aftermath of the melting because everyone knows the story of The Wizard of Oz and what happens to the Wicked Witch. Then the story flashes back to tell the story of how we got there.

I’ve seen literally every first look trailer reaction that’s on KZfaq and yours is the best! Very great insight and details! P.S. spoilers are kind of the best especially since it’s a broadway musical oh and book lol so don’t hold out on them(spoilers)

i think if either of the og's are playing galinda's mom, it's probably kristin. it makes more sense for kristin to play her mom, despite kris being the og galinda. i don't see idina being a good fit for galinda's momma. also, kris mentioned forever ago she "visited" ari on set but was really secretive about the details she gave out so i feel like she's playing momma upland!

this made me even more excited 😩 tbh i don’t know much at all about the wizard of oz or wicked. i’ve been diving into the wicked soundtrack ever since i heard the leaks of ariana singing no one mourns the wicked (which is def the part i’m most looking forward to, wow that song/scene is great). thanks so much for this thorough video!

22:22 I suspect that this scene might be a figment of Galinda's imagination in the Dorm Scene when they're sharing secrets and Galinda tells Elphaba that she and Fiyero are going to be married and we're seeing how she envisions her wedding. But I might be wrong.

16:02 I think that shot of the hat casting a shadow on Elphaba's face (so we can't see her eyes, we're only seeing the lower half of her face) is a nod to the show's logo, with the brim of the hat covering her eyes and only the lower half of her face visible. 18:07 Huh. I thought that was Glinda whom she was talking to in that scene.

You said that at the beginning of the review that you felt the film was lacking time, but you never got into it, could you expand on that, what you mean? Great review btw and you find me agreeable to most of your feedback apart from most of the songs you found uninteresting. I am a huge fan of the 1961 film since it’s been part of my childhood and so are the songs. Yet I find the performance, singing by the cast (including Elgort) and orchestration by Gustavo Dudamel superior and harmonically more rich. I totally agree about Tony and Maria, they are the boring part of the story for me too and I found Ansel extremely flat and wooden in most of the scenes. Especially his reaction to Maria’s news was cartoonish at best. Having said that IMHO he is much better than Beymer’s continues dreamy wide-eyed, over the top joyful portrayal. And also Ansel sings way better. Rachel is also leaps and bounds better than Wood in this one as Maria, far more believable for the naive full of doubts but yet with fire within eager to break out the family and racial bonds and look out for something new in life teenager. Wood felt way too mature for the role. Also Wood’s singing was awful compared to Rachel who is incredible. Where Rachel lacked was at the ending. Wood’s emotional devastation over Tony’s death was far more believable and gut wrenching. I get that Spielberg rushed the ending in this version (the only major flaw to me). As far as the choreography goes, it’s unfair to compare the two versions because they are so different for a reason and the reason is the filmmaker’s and cinematographer’s vision for the new film. What really stood out in the new version was the cinematography choices. Spielberg and Kaminski (cinematographer) wanted to bring the audience to the dance floor hence the continuous moving camera, dollies, push ins through the dancers, crane shots etc. They wanted to make the audience part of the act and feel the energy and tension. The drawback with that technique is that it misses the choreography as a whole, it’s hard for the camera when it’s inside the dance to capture the group as a whole (although many of the crane shots achieved that). But it didn’t matter that much given that Justin Peck’s choreography was less synchronised ballet like and more carefree/freestyle (for lack of a better word). Spielberg envisioned a choreography for his version of WSS that is more bound to the real world as possible and less to the stage but without losing the elegance and artistry of a stage act. He felt that a less gymnastic/ballet style and more freestyle jazz dance act is what suited to blue collar street gang members more. It was an excellent choice I think. 

Wise went for the full stage-like approach with wide 70mm static outside looking in from a far shots with minimal movement and zoom ins. He wanted to place the audience on the theater seats and let them admire the choreography/artistry in its entirety and full force, like a perfectly conducted symphony orchestra performing in front of you. Robbins’s choreography was clinical, every single movement and every single dancer synchronised to perfection with ballet, liquid and flawless movement. That type of choreography DEMANDED wide group shots, it would have killed the vibe and purpose of Wise’s vision for the film had he followed Spielberg’s approach. 

I feel both filmmakers, and their teams, achieved what they had envisioned. It’s up to us, the audience, to interpret it that way and choose which adaptation suits us best. Or why not both depending on the mood. Also the idea to bring the number of America out on the streets with the participation of the people around the hoods was genius, it made the number look huge and rich with Colors and complexity like a city celebration. I didn’t want for the scene to end. A detailed that I haven’t seen anyone mentioning is the fact that in the new version you could also hear the sounds on the dance floor. The music was not overpowering the sound effects. Every shoe squeaking and shuffling, dress fabric sounds when moving, hand grabs etc, you truly felt like you were part of the dance number. Sorry for the essay. :-) Note: Btw, did you notice how the color pallete of the film changed during the end credits to match the 1961 film (vintage saturated red/orange against the brick wall buildings and staircases). I found that was a great touch.

Loved your analysis. I felt like Ansel and Rachel sold their relationship, but I agree-she carried it for sure. I also loved all of the supporting cast as well! Ariana Debose as Anita was ASTOUNDING. I hope she gets the Oscar! I also found it profound that Kushner added a new layer to Tony. Rather than forcing Maria to speak English for him like Officer Shrank constantly enforced with the Sharks etc, Tony went out of his way to educate himself and make an effort to learn Spanish to communicate with her.

Sorry, but you clearly do not know the play/story well--Maria HAS a solo--"I feel Pretty', and she sings the significant first part of 'Tonight", 'I have a Love", as well as her part of 'One Hand, One Heart",and stage versions often have her sing 'Somewhere'.She actually sings more than Tony. You also do not mention that none of the dialogue in this trailer (NOT ONE LINE) is from the play.

In the reimagination of WSS, I concerns about the depictions of Riff . In the original film and stage production Riff, was likeable, endearing, charismatic, charming and dynamic. He respected, admired and looked up to Tony who was than more than just his friend he was family his big brother . Riff's always had Tony's back come what may. And that's is what so endearing and why we cared about him In the new WSS, from what we've seen Riff is angry, reactionary, manipulative and xenophobic and his relationship with Tony strained . Riff has to be most likeable character in the film otherwise he's just a thug and why should we care about him ? WSS is a tragedy and for it to work you have to care about it's most tragic characters, Riff, Bernardo and Tony.

Seeing as you really know West Side Story, I have a speculative inquery: seeing as Spielberg has stated that this version will be closer to the original play, what do you think of the possiblity of him changing song order. In the 1961 film, the most obvious and effective reordering of songs was Cool and Officer Krupke. This change was so dramamtically effective that apparently many productions after the film kept Cool after the rumble. It just makes more dramatic sense. But I believe I Feel Pretty was also changed in the film to take place before the Quentet. While I have only seen one production of the play (over 30 years ago) I have seen clips that show Chino confronting Maria about the death of Bernardo right after I Feel Pretty. So that too would fall after the rumble. But in this trialer we see it take place at her job, so they probably kept the 1961 film placement. And lastly, there was one song and dance moment that was cut entirely from the 1961 film, and that is the Somewhere ballet sequence. What do you think of the possibility that Spielberg might put this back in. It is actually a beautiful segment of Bernstien's score and has a Spielbergian fantasy element to it. But who knows? Thanks for breaking down the trailer. :-)

Velma and Graziella are Jet's girls. I think you said Shark's girls by mistake. Graziella if Riff's girlfriend...and 'her and Velman ain't dumb!' ;-) I think in the play 'Cool' is sung by Riff before the rumble. The order of the songs was changed in the film and "Ice" sings Cool because Riff has already left the building. Since Spielberg has already stated this film was a rewrite of the original Laurents screen story, that little clip could well be Riff singing Cool.
