Nevertheless, there are always benefits to the life of your compressor, its protection against power anomalies, the strain on your generator, and the number of other loads that can already be running when your compressor goes to startup, all by adding an EasyStart.

Hello and thanks for your question and for your purchase.. The EasyStart will optimize the compressor's starting amps during learning and will also record several other parametrics. Yes, as you are suspecting these are somewhat dependent on the run capacitor and its present condition. The good news is that if the run capacitor were to later fail, the EasyStart would detect this and start shutting down the compressor during steady-state running or even starting conditions. Typically it would be recorded as an "Overcurrent" fault. This is because a failed or failing run capacitor will cause BOTH the starting amps and steady-state running amps to increase. In some cases, these currents could increase quite dramatically, depending on the compressor's motor design. So, it's up to you if you want to replace your run capacitor now before EasyStart installation. There is some benefit to changing the run cap up front if you suspect is it failing since it can cause the compressor to draw more current while running and therefore waste more electricity. If you instead choose to wait until it fails and replace it down the road, we would recommend ReLearning the EasyStart, which is easily done from the Bluetooth app. Don't ReLearn unnecessarily though, unless you do change the run cap (later on) or if you are instructed to do so by customer support at a future time.

I don't get it. That high amperage he showed is just a spike. It's called "inrush current" and it occurs when any electrical device is turned on. It lasts a fraction of a second. This guy had to invent a special tool just to measure it. If & when I buy a whole house generator it will be the biggest I can afford and I don't see what good this device would do.
@MicroairNet
@MicroairNet 28 күн бұрын
Hello. The inrush current is exactly what the device is measuring. There are commercially-available clamp-on ammeters that can read inrush, but only a few are accurate. The lab device used in this video was custom built for our product development and design verification and it has the highest accuracy. It is therefore showing the real inrush amps. If you purchase a generator that is oversized and can handle the inrush that your A/C compressor requires, then no you will not need an EasyStart to be able to operate your A/C on generator. EasyStart allows generators that do NOT have enough capacity to start the A/C. So, adding EasyStart in these situations allow the A/C to start and run when it otherwise would not have worked. So in conclusion, if you don't need EasyStart, good for you. But also realize that 1) many others have found that oversizing their generator costs more than the cost of the EasyStart, so EasyStart can actually save on the generator investment, and 2) many people already have a generator that is undersized, so adding EasyStart allows them to use the A/C without having to replace the generator with a larger one.
@ramtek2702
@ramtek2702 28 күн бұрын
@@MicroairNet I'm sure everything you said is true however I consider it false economics since nobody in their right minds would size their generator for ONLY the AC. There will always be other devices to run simultaneously and so REQUIRE a larger generator. My advice to those already owning a small generator would be to use the cost of your device toward the purchase of a larger generator which is the true solution to their problem. BTW, using that "home brew" ammeter smacks of cheating. There's no way of actually know what the device is measuring except your word.

Would it work with a well pump?
@MicroairNet
@MicroairNet Ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for your question. Yes, for 3-wire well pumps (i.e. the type where 3 wires go down to the motor in the well), EasyStart can be applied. It's not a guarantee it will work, but several people have succeeded in doing so. Most Franklin well pump systems - which are very common in the USA - seem to work in this application. Most are CSIR type motors, and they typically require the EasyStart ASY-368-X48-BLUE or ASY-368-X72-BLUE, even when they are only 120VAC. Please also realize that because of limited resources now that it is high season, Micro-Air tech support cannot provide you detailed support for a specialty application like this. So, unless you are tech savvy enough to work out the wiring and installation on your own and at your own risk, Micro-Air does not recommend that you purchase an EasyStart for such an application.

@MicroAir does this device reduce electricity usage in total? For example: if a compressor uses 80 LRA to start, does this device basically send the compressor four jolts of 20 amps? Which equals 80 amps anyway? Second question, does this device reduce running electricity usage? Third question, why do you still need a capacitor? Fourth question, my capacitor is slightly outside it's ÷-5%,should I replace the capacitor when installing this device?
@MicroairNet
@MicroairNet 2 ай бұрын
Hello Jason. No, the EasyStart does not reduce electricity usage. Although the startup current will be reduced by 65-75%, the duration of the startup is so short, the total energy with respect to your monthly electricity bill - even with ~3 starts per hour - is almost immeasurable. Next, the EasyStart startup sequence does not "send jolts". It is very much the opposite. Instead, via some very complex and sophisticated electronics, EasyStart gently applies a gradual ramp of voltage and current to the run and start windings separately, monitoring the current and the compressor rotation all along the way. Once the compressor begins to rotate - which EasyStart detects real-time - the voltage is gently ramped the rest of the way to full power, then the electronic devices that performed the ramp are bypassed with a high-current relay. This sequence takes about 1 to 1.5 seconds. Lastly, if your run capacitor is slightly below its -5% tolerance, you do not need to replace it. Typically, a compressor will not suffer significantly increased running amps unless the run capacitor is more than 15% low. Same goes for the fan portion of the run capacitor. But, you can replace your run capacitor any time you wish.

@MicroairNet 4 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your EasyStart purchase. The orange wire does connect to the "HERM" terminal of the run capacitor, if it has 3 terminal clusters. If your run cap only has 2 terminal clusters, then you must use the wiring diagram for your system to figure out which terminal cluster is connected to the start winding of your compressor. Once you determine that (and the wire color for the start winding connection), you will then connect the orange wire to the SAME terminal cluster that also connects to the start winding. This is also true for the 3-terminal-cluster run caps since the HERM terminal also connects to the compressor's start winding. If you continue to have difficulty, please submit a trouble ticket to the Micro-Air support team at www.micro-air.com/contact_microair.htm. Thank you again for your business.

The app will then fill in the ID to the box and save it for you so it shows every time you open the app. The 3 ID boxes are so you can save up to 3 different EasyStart IDs, if you happened to own more than one. Please realize as well that the EasyStart must be energized in order for the Bluetooth to work. @MicroairNet
@MicroairNet 4 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for your question. What you are stating is actually not true. The EasyStart does not reduce the running/steady-state current of the compressor. All EasyStart does is throttle and gently apply the current and voltage applied during the brief 1-1.5 second startup in order to soft start it, accelerate it more slowly at first, in order to eliminate the normal in-rush current. Once this startup process is completed in less than 2 seconds, the EasyStart bypasses itself with internal high-current relays that re-connects the compressor directly to the input power, allowing it to run normally and consume the same running current.

@MicroairNet
@MicroairNet 4 ай бұрын
EasyStart would reduce your 109 LRA to about 35A (65-75% reduction). EasyStart can handle desert conditions, and has proven itself over and over under such conditions. It has even been used in A/C systems that are installed in military shelters in desert conditions. If you can enclose it in the systems electric box, that would certainly help relieve the extremes of a rooftop installation. If not, then EasyStart's IP65 and UV-resistant enclosure can handle the exposure. If you cannot fit it into the system's electric box, placing it underneath in a shadowed area never hurts.

This looks like a great device which I would like to install. I haven’t however been able to find any information on what happens if the EasyStart module should fail from some internal control problem? Electrical devices as we all know do fail, so I would like to learn what to expect when or if it does, which is usually not at the most opportune time. Will the A/C continue to operate under normal start up power, or not run at all? I have had a Generac load shed device fail and it prevented the A/C from running even with the main power on, resulting in an off hours call to get it back running. If the EasyStart fails, does it have an automatic/manual bypass built in, or would you have to rewire the A/C to get it operational until a replacement can be supplied?
@MicroairNet
@MicroairNet 5 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your question. As is the case for any soft starter, EasyStart is wired into the compressor wiring in such a way that if it were to malfunction, it would simply and safely inhibit compressor operation. EasyStart has the highest reliability in the industry after over 12 years refinement and maturity, so failures such as this are highly unlikely and extremely rare. In the few cases where there have been malfunctions, customers realize this because their indoor unit is running and blowing room-temperature air, the outdoor unit condenser fan is running, but the compressor is not after an extended period of time (i.e. after > 5 minutes). Unwiring the EasyStart is simple since 3 of the 4 connections are "added on" to existing locations and can simply be unplugged. The 4th connection involving the EasyStart's brown wire spliced to the compressor's run winding simply needs to be unspliced and the run winding connection needs to be reconnected to where it was prior to EasyStart installation.

Hi and thanks for your question. You can conduct the 5 learning starts either way. If you are not in a rush to operate your A/C on a generator or an inverter, just let the normal cycling via the thermostat do the learning for you. If you want to complete it more quickly, then you can deliberately turn the thermostat off and on or use the manual-button on the contactor. Please realize though that if you attempt to restart the compressor via the manual-button on the contactor before it has been off for at least 3 minutes, EasyStart will flash the green "NORMAL" LED (3-times) until the balance of that 3-minute delay expires. Since getting an energy monitor I've noticed that the air handler for my heat pump goes from 500 watts to 10kw for a couple minutes every couple hours when heating. The rest of the time my whole house including the 3 ton heat pump usually draws under 7kw. I'm wondering if the heat strips would need to be disabled for the defrost cycle if on generator power without a 10kw+ genset and if that would mean physically disconnecting them or if there is a setting with the easy air or something else that could manage it.

I looked into it more and found that removing and capping the white thermostat wire from the heat pump defrost board enables the defrost cycle to run without triggering the heat strips, so no more 10kw energy requirement popping up that would prevent my generator from being able to run the heat pump. I haven't noticed any comfort issues without the heat strips during defrost but it would be easy to reconnect the white wire if needed.

I was recommended this by an HVAC company because my compressor draw amps at start are a tad high. Would this help with the life of the compressor?

Hello and thank you for your question. Yes, using EasyStart eliminates both the mechanical and electrical stress of "hard" starting. It also dramatically quiets the startup audibly. Therefore, common sense dictates that the life of the compressor will be extended by repeatedly soft starting with EasyStart instead of hard starting without it. Thank you again for your interest. We have a 15%-off holiday sale going on up to the 31st, so take advantage if you would like.

Would these work with a (true) 5HP air compressor? My inverters will handle it, but I don’t like slamming them. My alternative is to find a 3-phase motor and use a VFD.

Hello and thanks for your question. A 5HP motor is supported, but "frame" motors that are used in large centrifugal pumps, air compressors, dive compressors, and other machinery are VERY difficult to wire with the EasyStart. This is because these types of motors don't "present" their individual winding wiring (start, run, common) as readily as does a regular HVAC compressor motor. Wiring an EasyStart into a frame motor has been done with success multiple times in the past, but not without an enormous amount of upfront engineering work and the actual detailed wiring diagram from the motor manufacturer (e.g. Baldor, Leeson, etc.) Micro-Air did this type of work in the distant past for some OEMs that were incorporating EasyStart into their appliance/machine designs. As a result, Micro-Air no longer supports these applications for individual customers and discourages anyone from trying to do it on their own since we cannot support it nor can we afford to honor the warranty or any liabilities. You'd be doing it on your own and at your own risk if you chose to attempt it. Sorry, but that's the reality. Thank you anyway for your interest.

Two additional recommendations. Scroll compressor slurp up an initial larger amount of oil on initial startup. You should allow compressor to run a minute or two to disperse the oil initially sucked up into compressor head. Several short start-run cycles can log too much oil in compressor head causing oil slugging on compressor. When mounting EasyStart in electrical compartment it is a good idea to check the sheet metal screw clearance on back side of sheet metal. Driving a too long sheet metal screw into condenser coil will give you a very bad day causing a refrigerant leak in condenser.

I installed both of these today on my 4ton and 2ton compressors and let me say, they work and do exactly what they say they do. The 4Ton Unit went from around 95-100 amps on start down to 39.4. The 2ton went from 58 to 24.3, absolutely amazing. The compressors are quieter, and start more gently. I can easily start both on my 24kw whole home generator now without any bogging down or lights flickering. This product is well made, and does what it is advertised to do. Took me 2 hours to install both, I have a bad back so I took about 45 mins worth of breaks, if I was myself from 30 years ago this would have been a 30 minute job to install 2. Very easy to install and well worth the money spent.

Just installed mine and the LRA was 77. After 5 starts it's 23 amps. A 70% drop in current on a 3 ton ac. Running current is 7 amps. Hopefully it'll drop the electric bill a little. I installed it so I can run my home ac using two EcoFlow Delta Pro's.

Just ordered two of these for my 2 and 4 ton AC units so i can take the strain off of my Generac 24kw whole home generator. The 4 ton is old and pulls 117 amps during start and the generator runs it, but it bogs down hard. These should eliminate the bogging and the lights dimming on generator.
