hmmm I have never heard of it used before and have no experience with it. You might try asking one of the online bird groups. It would not be a natural choice for the types of finches I keep, even the cavity nesters

You may have better options there but I am quite sure they can’t ship live larvae overseas. the company is Arbico Organics in US. You can always ask.

Thank you for all your informativ videos about finches and as your aviary was build up. I always start my day with a cup of coffee an one or two videos from Echos channel, lerning about a lot about the finches and the aviary or watching your birds while they bathing, its always a pleasure for me , before I start my day with husband and my 96-years old Mum, she ist staying with me and my husbands an our dogs, too. I I know there is a lot of work behind each video! As a young woman in former times I have had african finches still in the cage, now, beyond my 60s, you have given me the courage and passion to realize my long held wish again. I have now Gouldian finches and would like to have some more other finches with them.With the help of your many good suggestions, I m curretly planning to redesign our hen house in the medium term so that my birds can live in it. I wish you continued strength, creativity`, healthy and all the best. Thank you, you are great and a strong woman. Best wishes Kristin from Germany

90% fake. there are good lists of plants online that are safe for birds.

you have the aviary of my dreams! I adopted a bonded pair of fancy pigeons about 4 years ago and they are my indoor feathered babies, I never seperate them due to the stress that it may cause. Are Finches the same as far as being bonded to one mate? Also, what nesting materials do you give them, I'm asking because I still havent found a material that my pigeons "love".

thank you very much. Some finch species are the same but not all. In most species, the female does the choosing. They typically can adapt to another partner especially if they can not hear their original partner. I cut up burlap into about 7 inch lengths.

Nice capture on his song! Back in my finch days, the fire finch pair built a rather extraordinary (sorta) hanging nest. He was a fierce defender of the nest. All other finches were WAY too interested in his nest. When the clutch failed, the pair flew out and the nest was torn apart by the other finches in just a few moments. I had a memory of tossing a small cotton ball into the aviary and that male grabbing it - “screaming with delight” - and flying around with that ball until it fluffed to about 3 times his size. It was hilarious! Thx for another great video!

why do we have to ring the bird? I have so many birds with different color ring. It does not say anything to me.

color rings help the breeder to track individual birds and correlate with breeding records for healthy genetics. Numbered rings help track birds generally for identifying captive bred vs. wild caught birds, again for healthy populations. If you are not a breeder, they would still help you identify individual birds to be able to know who gets along, who should not be allowed to breed, who is the bird who looks unwell etc.

I can’t speak to Budgies unfortunately as they are better chewers than finches. A budgie group on facebook could answer definitively.

I did not see them eating any. There are a lot concentrated in the compost bin and I never caught them in there foraging. however the flies go everywhere in the aviary so possibly they were getting them elsewhere. they did eat mini mealworms readily.

I don’t think chicks would beg from foster parents after fledging. It is very hard to hand feed at that age too. I could remove the eggs or very young chicks to foster, but then I don’t learn anything about how to take care of parents properly so they will take care of chicks. It is a tradeoff.

Dear Echo's Aviary ; what a lovely and Lively place to have different kinds of aviary's with beautiful finches in them 💫 I loved the way you filmed the couple of gold frosted finches and their breeding behaviour 🕊 💬 I must say you got quite Lucky that they even wanted to breed because i had them once to and they just wouldn't breed 🤔 probably i thought due to the other type of finches but what i d8dn't knew at that time but thanks to you that mysterie of the past has been solved because i heard you talkie about that they are indeed quite tenacious for their size. And now i know that it must have been the couple of gold frosted finches who probably were responsable for throwing out eggs out of the other finches nests. And now as i look back in retrospect they must have tried to steel the other finches their nest to breed in. But their tenacity got so worse that i had to place them in another smaller aviary but they still never got to breed. But as i have been watching your video you have more aviary's in a quite a big room. For now i have really enjoyed this video and i'm going to watch more of your video's but than with other type of finces in them. Only thing i disliked was the fact that instead of real trees there are fake trees in there, i think they would appreciate actual trees way more and also i didn't see nesting accomodations for them, other than that this beautifully done ❤

thank you. late summer is not the breeding season for my species, hence the reason no nesting materials. There are many videos about breeding in the aviary if you are curious. The artificial foliage is a deliberate choice because for where I live, I could either optimize the environment for growing plants or for keeping birds. Over the years I have tried both and I can not tell any difference in how the birds interact with the fake foliage (perching, copulating, foraging for bugs, futzing, nest building, hiding, resting, breeding success etc.).

please help?!?! i have a question about hand rearing finch?!? when the baby finch is born but the mother throws them away my friend doesn’t know what to do but he went and bought a brinsea tlc30 brooder…his babies doing fine but when they are like 6-10 days old they started to be really dried and dying?!? what’s the right temperature and humidity for them?!? i’m asking for him cause he can’t read or write.. he has a learning disability thank you in advance!? should the humidity be higher for older chicks or lower?!? please help?!

they need high humidity as new chicks. put a container of water in brooder. do not spill water on chicks. roll up a paper towel and put it in container so it wicks out water. replace water when empty. watch chick skin to tell you when hydrated. be sure older chicks can not get to water and drown if they are old enough to move around.

@@Echosaviary in the brinsea i do have a bucket of water which i put a screen over the water container so babies can’t fall into the water… the chicks are good healthy temper set to from day 1 to 6 days at 36.8 humidity at 50-58 … it’s all ok until the chicks started to have pin feathers or 6-10 days old when they started to be dried up… i had the temperature at 35 C and humidity at 50-58… at this age they all started to be dried up

What type of of grass is that? Also how do you deal with lots of pooping? I’m trying to help my disabled budgie.

that is artificial turf. check out options at home depot etc. it may have some advantages foe you. the liquid portion of poop tends to drain down the “grass” leaving the poop to dry quickly. make two sets (at least) of mats so they can be changed out often. the edges of mats need to be sealed after cutting or they unravel. Most important finches do not chew the way budgies do! I would guess they are not suitable.

thank you! That is a product called available insectivores dust from Eutrolabs. It makes up for the nutrient deficiencies in larvae (and has added bonus that it separates the larvae into individuals instead of clumping when frozen. I dust it on live insects as well like mealies (which is the intended purpose).

I don’t actually know. It is a wild grass (possibly escapee and not native). I can tell you that I feed orchard grass and several grass mixes from American Meadows (SW grass mix has some species similar to where most of my bird species come from). I also feed half-ripe panicum species and crab grass is a favorite too.

I'm feeding a baby house finch that's nest was attacked by a crow. This bird survived and is ok but the other baby birds are dead. This is day 6 and baby bird is doing well. I am feeding him every hour or two for 15 hours a day and keeping him warm and clean in a little box inside a small cage. I think he is about 17 days old today. People on FB say I should take it to a bird rehabber. I read if this bird gets imprinted on me I can't release but must keep as a pet. HOW do the bird rehabbers prevent baby birds from getting imprinted on THEM?

I can’t answer your question for anyone else but I did volunteer at the Raptor lab at the University of Minnesota for many years working in the rehab area and one of my jobs was to hand feed wild baby birds brought to the lab in similar circumstances. We took no precautions against imprinting. It was never a problem to transition them back into the wild once independent. Even the captive birds I hand feed, easily transition back to a feral state when kept with other birds.

@@Echosaviary thanks for your reply....so the bird I am hand feeding is just by himself...so you think I can release him when he is able to eat on his own ? Will he think he is a bird and be able to find other birds? I think today he is 18 days old. How long until he can eat on his own?

@@shelleycharlesworth5177 sorry for late reply, at about 30 days the chick will be eating and drinking on his own. If you or any neighbors feed the birds, then release nearby and they will follow the lead of the birds at the feeders to get them started.
