Learn how to heave to to keep your position. Should be easy to find instructions on line. Basically, you do a halfway come about and allow the headsail to back and have the main go slack. Position the tiller to keep that position. You will pretty much stay put. A necessary skill.

Nice boat! I'm an inland sailor and bought my first sailboat(23' Columbia) 3 years ago. I love the amount of space it takes up in ones brain. I highly reccomend investing in an autotiller.(mine is st1000) You don't know how much you need it until you get it. Not being chained to that stick has made my experience WAY more enjoyable. Best $500 you could spend.

When backing with rudder hard over you restrict water to prop . Putting in gear does help

Now I'm jealous. Pull your main up so that that it's tight. Maybe pull down at the gooseneck. You'll get better performance. One question. What is that line at the end of your boom that looks like it's tied to the rail? Probably better to tie it off on the boom. You're a star. One thing I've heard as a suggestion (which I've never done) would be to try to crew on a boat in a race. You would learn a lot and be able to ask stupid questions. Most people love to show off their knowlege.

Hey thank you for sharing! I definitely want to try and crew on a race boat that would be a lot of fun. That line from end of boom to the railing is just something that keeps the boom from flopping around in the slip. I’m pretty sure that is not correct to have it like that when under sail so I’m not really sure why I keep it like that when under way. I need to sort out what to properly do with my main sail when under way to maximize performance.

I believe you will want to find an anchor shackle with a pin size that just fits the hole in your anchor stock. This arrangement allows the chain to pivot on the shackle when the boat swings on anchor. The wear will then be on the last chain link and the shackle, not on your anchor stock.

Right after the tiller broke off, it seems to do a complete 180. All the (5) nuts are back on the port side. What's confusing is What was holding the (upside down) tiller high enough to clear the seats, if the tiller bracket hinge bolt hole was on the forward side? I would think the hinge bolt hole would need to be Aft in order for the tiller to stay high enough to clear the seats. I am definitely overthinking this! lol Thanks Matt For some reason I thought you were keeping her in Ventura. I have a close friend with an old Columbia 29 in this (CI) Peninsula marina, but he's hauled out up at Derecktor this week.

Main sail raised in calm waters, also invest in a tiller pilot. You will get the hang of things. Everyone starts out somewhere. I started on a catalina 25 at 15 years old. Just turned 42 and I am on a Tayana 52 now with my wife and 3 kids full time.

Yes, a tiller pilot is nearly a must-have for solo sailing. Especially for staying in irons while you raise sails. I've had great luck with a Simrad TP10 on my Precision 23, and Mac 25 before that.

Ahoy, good to see ya out there, trying to get back ourselves, but slips nowadays here in Ventura area. Not if just when. Get them sea legs back. I would hoist the main facing directly into the wind in the harbor as im going out. Then, like others say, you will be more stable and won't feel that swell. But also, that's where you find yourself and how your boat handles and yourself as well. I would go out on most daysy just for that purpose. But not unsafe of my abilities. You're on the right course...Good winds to ya. Slainté

G'day from Australia. I live on a Columbia 27 foot sailing boat which i am refitting. You should wait when its a light breeze of around 5/6 knots. Buy an areometer to measure the wind speed. Do not go out in 12 + winds for now. Gerard on board, SV GEMSTAR.

Midwest boy here too, grew up between Oklahoma and KC. Wound up living in South Louisiana, joining a Yacht Club, buying and refitting a derelict 76 Irwin 37CC. I’m an Comms/Marine Electronics Tech so on the 1st day on the boat I got the macerating toilet working and water running. Since then I have also refitted a Gemini Catamaran. I bought 3 books to gain knowledge- 1. Know Your Boat by David Kroenke. 2. The 12v Doctor Practical Handbook by Edgar J Beyn and Boat Owners Handbook by John Vigor. Get some tools and get started, I look forward to watching your videos.

So, not sure what the deal is with your rudder. But I have a 1975 I30 so it should be the same boat. When I had first bought it and had it on the hard a cool guy came by to chit chat as sailors are apt to do. He told me he has the same boat for a while. Told me a tidbit of information that was an absolute gem. This is what he said: this boat has what is called a “spade rudder”. It is completely independent of the keel. He told me that his boat had a tiller for steering. Mine had a wheel and pedestal. I found a tiller on board. He told me that one of the best features of the boat was the tiller and rudder can be inverted 180 degrees .. actually rotated 360 degrees if it’s on a tiller .. but rotated 180 when going in reverse. Doing this allowed the helmsman to maneuver the boat in reverse with basically surgical precision. I reversed out of many very dicey situations with ease after I removed the pedestal and installed the tiller. It also opened up the cockpit space wise and using an autopilot was much easier and cheaper. So.. good for thought.
@midwestsailor
@midwestsailor Ай бұрын
Yeah absolutely! Im learning that it is actually very easy to maneuver. And after a long trip I went on recently I very much want to look at getting an autopilot for my tiller. Thanks for sharing :)

I can't speak exactly what's going on with your rudder. However, I would suggest NEVER drilling on the cockpit sole, without something to stop that bit from going through. You have enough holes in the boat. Otherwise keep working it. So having had an older boat, concentrate on the following in this order. Structural (address rot, leaks, and ANY potential for sinking, including through hulls), mechanical, standing rigging running rigging, and THEN aesthetics. Everyone wants to polish and make look nice first. Remember, if you are cleaning or waxing or compounding, take FIVE BIG STEPS away from the boat. If you can't see it, no one else can either.
