Kirby Star Allies is basically a combination of the GameCube Kirby prototype (which was supposed to be the next game before Squeak Squad (and Super Star Ultra, sort of) filled that gap) and a continuation of Kirby Planet Robobot. I like the game and what it offers (having playable Helpers and new remade levels from the classic games), but it could’ve been longer and taken further with the whole “fanservice” thing. We should’ve had more bosses and helpers from past games (seriously, where are Drawcia and (an actual fight from) Galacta Knight, Poppy Bros. Sr, Wheelie, Capsule J, and Phan Phan?) and a mode where you can play a mish-mash of FULL remakes of classic levels where you can play as the characters they originated from!

Making a cohesive Sonic movie* adaptation thats also 1:1 with the games--or any other part of the series--is simply impossible. The lore of the games and its many, MANY alternate spinoffs have very inconsistent internal rules/tone/aesthetics due to its "Lets chase cool trends but try to be taken seriously at the same time" approach. The only truly consistent thing in most of them is the basic Sonic and Eggman dynamic. This is especially the case with the series before the series got run into the ground around the mid 2000's. Ken Penders said it best: Sega dug themselves into a corner because they only cared about Sonic's image. The story and whether it made any sense or not was always treated as an afterthought. They've tried changing course with recent games by hiring Ian Flynn and a lore manager, but I think its too little too late to course correct by now. The total lack of consistency in Sonic's lore is more or less what defines the series whole image now. So I cant really get upset over the fact that a live action Sonic movie changes a lot of stuff to work better as a self-contained movie. * I dont count the Sonic OVA as a movie because that was a two-part pilot for an aborted anime series. It captures the spirit of the games aesthetics well, but even that made DRASTIC changes to the lore in order to potentially work as a series. For comparison, Marios almost never had that issue with adaptations because Nintendo has a very clear and consistent idea about what Mario is--its a timeless toy like fantasy with NO pretense of reality. The stakes are almost always low, the tone is consistently lighthearted and playful, aesthetic changes are subtle and restrained and still cohesive with each other despite the change in graphics over time, and anything resembling continuity is basically just easter eggs for long time fans, and the series handles adding contemporary elements carefully so that it doesn't dilute the timelessness. With few exceptions (the live action Mario movie, Super Paper Mario, SMG1) they NEVER budge on that. Sonic, in comparison, is all over the place in its identity. The series simply cannot make up its mind what its supposed to be. Like say, would a Mario game have EVER had an entire plot built around the fact that a main characters child friend got murdered due to a corrupt government? One that was NEVER even hinted at existing in prior Sonic entries, which otherwise had very surreal fantasy plots at best? Thats the big problem with Sonic for me--it wants to be this fun cartoon fantasy, but it also wants to "take it's cake and eat it too" and be cool and taken seriously by having stories with real tension and stakes. It tries to split the difference between the two, but the shifts into darker elements are jarring and clash badly with the series tone. You cant change the established or implied rules of a world just because you want to tell different stories with it. Sonic's world rides off surrealism, which means ANYTHING can happen in it--sentient robots, storybooks come to life, aliens, monsters, etc. But that also makes it very hard to establish tension because there are very few if any hard rules about what CANT happen in it, so nothing is truly at stake. Some characters like Tikal's ghost and the Chaos Emeralds reviving Sonic in Sonic 2006 show that even death can be more of a short term inconvenience than anything else in Sonic's world (unless you're Maria or a dire villain like Black Doom or Erazor Djinn anyway). Nothing lost, nothing gained. So whenever it tries to be serious and have actual story stakes, it doesn't work because it's either so realistic that it badly clashes with the inherently weird nature of Sonic's world (Sonic 2006 is the worst example of this), or it's SO over the top with it that it's impossible to take it seriously (Shadow The Hedgehog). The closest Marios ever gotten to being that dark was Super Paper Mario's story, but even thats a spinoff and was offset by various wacky fantasy elements that kept the tone stable and the stakes from being raised so high that it unwittingly deflates the tension. But it's no accident that they backpedaled in tone afterward. P.S. I'm not a fan of Penders or his Archie Sonic stories. But I do think he has a point that it was Sega's fault for the utter lack of consistency throughout the entire Sonic franchise due to their lackadaisical approach to managing it before trying to reign its lore in.
