Jim, you are so right. Inland, the sky is usually blue but the winds more variable.At the coast, the wind is better but the gloom is always an issue, especially as we approach summer in this hemisphere. Ì trust we all get more flying time in the upcoming months.

Hi David. The orange glider is a joy to fly. It is balanced front to back and side to side in flight. Bidirectional turns and long glides are smooth and predictable. In the right wind, it practically hovers. I have tried to work with a rigged EPP foam glider rigged for panying control, but so far, Ive been frustrated. A foam glider will get airborne and go high. I can not get the line wound fast enough to make controlled turns when I want to. If the line gets stuck on the stick and wheel, the glider bonks the ground hard...and I do the walk of shame.

What would your suggestion be to learn on and where to purchase?

Jim, Gomberg did us a real service at the time by licensing so many of those innovative kite designs. He was the beginning and end of the golden years of kiting. Cherie and I hope to stretch some more ripstop as our summer proceeds. There will not be anything organized like a festival until August, so we will hold forth on our own till then. Meanwhile, keep your videos coming.

David, yes, it is an art form that I absolutely love. The eagle is balanced front to back and side to side meaning it is unstable everywhere. It needs a little bit of wind and a whole lot of practice. 6 months to learn, 3 years to get good. It likes 3mph and 9mph is too much. Cherie does a masterful job tracking the bird. Happy boy!

@@PanyingPilot sadly we don't have many calm days in the UK. What span is that eagle? Perhaps if I had a time machine I could learn.

The eagle would be a source of frustration, I fear in turbulence. I know. The wingspan is 1.2 meters. My largest is 1.3. Our smallest, Cheries trick style eagle is 80 cm wingspan.

Good question. I'll answer with a brain dump. (1) Sampo barrel swivels (2) linked swivels 2 or more( 3) inspect the swivel and attach it so that the swivels solid body faces you and your line, the thinner pin end attaches to the kite thus preventing line to wrap the pin and jam it(4) experiment with a tied leader line or a fixed split ring from the kite to the swivel. This puts the swivel away from the kite, but on the flight line.(5) experiment with a experiment with a tail on the kite in order to control side to side wobbling. This will make the angle the swivel turns at more consistent (6) having additional half inch split rings and split ring pliers is deucedly handy. (7) have more than one size swivel.

@@SitocawithSorento my method is to make a 4 inch knotted loop of line. I pass this through a small hole drilled across the center spar at the tip of the kite. I then cinch the looped line on the spar so it does not fall off or come apart. At the other end of the loop, I larkshead a small Sampo swivel through a ring attached to the swivel (think standard off the shelf fishing tackle for small fish). The assembly should dangle from the tip of the box kite. Finally, the Sampo swivel is clipped onto the end of the flight line. The flight line does not twist and the kite spins freely. The secret is in the looped line between the swivel and the kite. It permits changes in angle and tension in the kite and swivel without jamming. It may also twist, but eventually it will be pulled straight.

@@PanyingPilot From what i deduce, the swivel clip should be clipped to the flying line instead of the loop line which is attached to the centre spare, am I right?

Jim, we were surprised, then reminded it was Easter break week for the kids. Too, there were a lot of retired folks taking long walks. I must credit my experience that the eagle and glider didn't drop in expectedly on day trippers. Our camp on the dune was perfect for flying the big stuff. Finally, when we were about to leave for home, the Barbie kites were coming out and running amok as they do. Time for us to retire the good stuff and call it done. Nick, it pulled like a Mac truck! Cherie and I will need to finesse the takedown. I have a method, but when I went back to adjust the sand anchor, the figure 8 ring became unavailable. That thousand pound Climax line segment doubled and clipped in between bol and anchor really gives a lot of rise. We will have to chat qbout next month.
