For the topic of sunscreen: One thing most people forget are their lips. Usually don't get sunburned, but longterm exposure ,during long rides especially, can lead to damage (constantly cracked lips etc.) and significantly increase risk of skin-cancer. There are lipbalms with spf which I recommend.

Make sure you check the weather before heading out for a long ride. Also make sure you have a back up plan in case of extreme or dangerous weather, I got out of a severe thunderstorm that hit my area because I had someone I could call to pick me and my bike up. Be safe out there

Question 🙋♂️ For the 30/30s or 40/20s etc. is it better to: A) Target the effort that one can sustain over the duration of all repeats, e.g. hit 500W for every one of 10x 30s repeats or B) Go as hard as one can for every single burst risking that the first effort will be done at e.g. 700W but the last one at only 400W?
@tristantakevideo3 күн бұрын
Good question. I always suggest aiming for the same number for all of them, so 500w if that’s what you think is sustainable, and if you’re still feeling good by the last few, you can lift it for those. You’re better off completing the session as planned rather than completely blowing your doors and limping home having only finished 70% of the intervals. Hope that helps 🙏🏼

Yeah, only if you want a super, super hard workout. Don't repeat this too often as it's extremely difficult.

Thank you very much for posting this great video about training. For those of us who don’t have a power meter but rather use a HR monitor, how can we follow the FTP instructions? For example: how do you convert 115% of your FTP into HR figures (aprox) or perceived offort? many thanks, again 🙏🏼, cheers from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

Great information. Thank you very much. Can you explain in more detail the periodisation graph at 23:25 (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nteKeNln3rPLYac.html) ? I see the values grow, but by how much exactly (percentage of current ftp) ?

Learning no hands is actually really nice as I feel it makes you WAY more in tune with the balance of your bike and how to control your bike better even when holding the handlebars (riding no hands is pretty simple, sit up and put all your weight on your saddle, like all of it, that will be your stability as well as the nose of the saddle between your legs, you turn no hands by leaning using your sit bones be careful doing this though and take wider arcs than normal so you don't have to lean as much, only do it once you are confident in just riding no hands on a straight. Also pedaling helps keep you stable, easier gears are preferred, keep it light but smooth too light and you will be unstable, I know it may feel weird at first trying to pedal no hands, just keep at it).. On top of everything else he said in the video!

The bike is quite cool. But decathlon needs to have a lot better service. Only a few service points in Germany. To get your fork in the right length you need to get the bike to your local shop and they sent it to the service point. Way too complicated.

The light switches should be on the inside so the person in the room can control the lights. Anyways, hello just tuning in a year late to watch this video, I am thinking of doing my first big gravel 90km ride in a few months in NSW Aust, the Dirty Detour, so watching so many videos to get tips and tricks. So hello, my name is Chelsea and I wanted to say just watched a few of your videos and I am enjoying them. Cheers Chels c:

I never stand when climbing a hill... is that something I should be doing? It seems counterproductive since you say we shouldn't "surge" and we should keep a consistent power level. Standing shoots up the power level and wastes effort.

Tristan, not sure if you will see this months later. John mentioned that he'd usually decrease volume while intensity increases. Can that be applied to this routine in a beneficial way? I'm only doing 6-8 hrs a week right now. And at this low of volume is no intensity necessary in a recovery week? I've seen some folks say do half volume and half intensity duration regardless of routine. Others like John suggest easier riding first 4 or 5 days then start to ramp up. A bit confused there. Would be awesome to hear him discuss more about periodization and recovery.

I don't understand what "relax your shoulders and elbows" means. To me, this always results in less weight on hands - and thus my lower back has to support my torso more. This results in nasty lower back pains after just 3-4 hours of riding (and I ride marathons, so I need to go for 8+ hours a day..)

One think I would recommend (supplementing the bike fitting) is a good bike saddle. Most standard saddles are ergonomically subpar - too narrow, no pressure relief in the perineal area (numbness, anyone?), too hard (or too soft),...

Bigger chain ring is not just about bigger speed. It is also about that you can use bigger ring in back for the same speeds which is more efficient..
