I have been thru Big Stone Gap so many times thru the years. It's been a long time now. We were going over the mountain into Southeastern KY. The towns of Pound, Norton and Wise, etc. are as familiar as our towns of Jenkins Whitesburg and Neon. You should go over the hill and visit our towns. Also trying to recover from the loss of coal mining.

The worst part of this hike is up the dam. I especially like hiking this in the early mornings, just around dawn.

Great Abingdon vid, interviewing three people who moved in with serious money. A few omissions: 1) Only go there if you don't need a job. 2) If you ain''t white, you better know where you're allowed to be. 3) If you ain't far right, stay quiet. 4) Don't live there if you need even slightly special medical care. 5) Make sure you got a thief-resistant house. Drugs are huge. 6) Expect Boss Hawg politics.

From an actual Abingdon resident: 1) I know several people who moved here for jobs. 2) That's ridiculus, not worth my time 3) Sure, take that advice 4) I mean, you can get to many specialists with a quick trip to Bristol, Kingsport or Johnson City. 5) Crime rate is actually very low in Abingdon 6) What does that even mean?

agree with this except Abingdon swings very left in politics

@@snogboxes Yeah, you’re right I guess. It definitely does. I’ve personally never really needed any serious medical care, but everything I’ve heard about Ballad is negative.

Jack Mack likes to toot his own "Im the man" horn. My wife's Grandpa is 91. He was raised there. His Dad spent his entire life driving a mule through the mines. That is the history and the spirit that built Big Stone Gap. All of that was gone when Mr Mack arrived. It is great that he honors the history by playing all of the parts though. Id like to see the play.

This is where we went every Summer when I was a kid. To see Grandma in Long Holler. These are the places I've been to see over and over again when traveling with my sisters. It is always like going back in time, and always a bitter sweet experience. I love Scot Co. Virginia! Never been to Creation Kingdom, though, so now that's on my list for sure!

The views were better before some assholes burned down the original watch tower. It was about 3 times the size of the tower they rebuilt. The 2 men were from Coeburn. 1 was sentenced to 3 years in prison & the other 5 years in prison (he didn't cooperate), & both were ordered to pay a fine of $523,851. It was a historical monument. Also, if you're ever in the area around the 4th of July, Flag Rock is the absolute best place for the fireworks. They set them off from the football field down below, so they pretty much go off right in front of your face. You could sit down & stare straight ahead & see every single firework. It's well known, tho... So get there early. And yes, I'll probably keep commenting as I watch. It's weird seeing your small town that you figure nobody really knows about being covered on KZfaq.

It is so surreal watching this place I've lived all of my life on KZfaq. Kinda gives me a new appreciation for it. Kinda like the movie Big Stone Gap. I know a few of the extras they used in that movie. In the scene where theyre in the teuck talking to someone, the black guy in the middle with glasses is Brandon B. I won't put his last name out of respect for his privacy, but he's a good guy. I don't think he had a single line, but he did get a fairly decent amount of screen time.

Home "Sweet" Home. Don't get me wrong. The mountains are beautiful & the history is pretty rich for America, but ehen youve lived in this one small town your entire life? Yeah, that grass on the other side starts to look greener & greener as time goes on. I find it impressive that this little coal mining town is still running fairly strong considering the mining is more or less gone from the region. Most ppl I know from here can trace their family lineage to... Well... Right here. Lol. I, for example, am a Melungeon. They were black, so they hid out in the Appalachian Mountains, or if their skin was light enough, they would hide out in Native American tribes. If you ever see a Native American with a beard in an old photo, that's not Native American. Lol. Melungeons were free born for around 300 years before being brought to America as indentured servants & then freed upon completion of their work. However, since they were black, it didn't matter where they came from. So they hid in these mountains. I've got most of the prominent features of a Melungeon, such as the eye folds at the tear ducts, the ridge bump (I guess is the best way to describe it) near the base of the back of the skull, & "shovel", or "scoop" teeth. The front teeth are kinda concave on the back, like little scoops. Unfortunately, it does come with its downsides. Familial Mediterranean Fever is pretty common among Melungeons & can mimic (iirc) over 20 different diseases. My mom went 10-15 years thinking she had Lyme Disease & was on disability bc of it. Once she was properly diagnosed & given a single pill (Obviously she had to keep taking them. I'm just saying it wasn't some cocktail of drugs), she called & gave her Disability up & went back to work. Sadly, she became disabled again, & we lost her a little over 3 years ago. Anyway... Just wanted to post this for anyone that might be curious about the ppl of the area. Most ppl around here are Melungeon & don't even know what that is. Melungeons have also kinda Michael Jackson's. I'm sure there are still black Melungeons out there, but most that I know are white. Especially my pasty white ass. 😂

I"m in Scott county-- just a short hop away from here... been back in the area after 30+ years in California-- and wouldn't trade living in this area for the whole damn state out there.. California would be a great place to live-- if you tak all the libs, fools, foreigners, idiots and commies and stuff OUT of the 13million in that area-- but then- the 12 good folk left couldn't run the state by themselves...
