you could avoid nanoplastic polymer paint and instead use sand with agar agar or starch and car's ceramic nanocoating for waterproofing. also you can avoid expoxy and glass fiber with flax, jute, hemp, etc fibers and some natural glue as well, or use instead flexible skin-on-frame sof with those fabrics

It is not "aotearoa" as some people refer to New Zealand as. The Maoris arrived from the north and when they landed at Great Barrier Island ( which they called Aotea ) they climbed to the top of a hill and saw another island in the distance, covered in white clouds. They called that island "aotearoa" and some people incorrectly say that it means "land of the long white cloud". Unfortunately, there were many similar meanings for the same sounds that made up the Maori's speech, as they had no common written meanings such as the english alphabet systems of unification of speech sounds and meanings. Aotearoa actually means "another good island" and when both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand were explored they gave both islands separate names. They did not name both Islands as one place such as in other cultures that could do so, ( with a written form of word meaning ) until modern times, when some Maoris decided that New Zealand was called "Aotearoa" by the first Maoris to arrive here, and so they claim that the name for New Zealand should be "Aotearoa" and not "New Zealand". The Maoris communicated sounds with movements ( their haka and other singing dances a good example ) and never had a symbolic recognition written communication which makes their non-european verbal communication tribal related. This led to confusion and many wars between each tribe, and the construction of communal tribal 'Pa's" ( villages ) were surrounded by barriers to invasion by another tribe. In today's times the Maori tribe that settled in the South Island ( Ngh Tahu ) call the South Island the same name they have been calling it since they arrived, and have said that it will never be called "Aotearoa" or anything else. The current push for Maori names and road signage is just a political ploy for the Labour Party to get the Maoris support as voters, and it is just another type of election bribe.

Amazing video! Thanks so much. Why is the main hull of the traditional proa rounder on the windward side and flatter on the other?
@malin5468
@malin5468 7 ай бұрын
I think the idea is to generate some lift to windward, rather like an aircraft wing. Some of the Hobie catamarans have also adopted this feature.
@Bloomio95

@@malin5468 Interesting. So does it counter the force of the wind?
@malin5468
@malin5468 7 ай бұрын
@@Bloomio95 The flat outer (leeward) side helps to prevent leeway. Think of trying to push a flat plank of wood sideways through the water-it would be very difficult. The inner (windward) side has the opposite effect. Because this side is curved (looking from above), the distance the water has to travel from bow to stern is longer than on the flat side. The water therefore has to travel slightly further between these two points (Bernoulli’s Principle), thus creating a reduction in pressure. In sailing terms this is called lift and is what lifts the Americas Cup boats out of the water. The hydrofoils on the AC boats and other sailing hydrofoils are however much longer-rather like a plane wing, so the lift is much greater. On the proa the hull would have to be much deeper to generate really significant lift. Or they could install a dagger board with an asymmetrical cross section (flat side to leeward). But it seems that the flat side of the proa hull is sufficient. The best description of catamaran hulls is given in a recent Joyrider video on KZfaq.

Boat building is the best way for many to overcome so many personal challenges. We have been building many Optis and saw the changes in peoples lives - we actually using boatbuilding and sailing to build LifeSkills. Too bad that too many schools stopped their work shops, a big loss for children. Well done guys. For me it's most rewarding

Hello dears, so nice to have news from you. I have just bought a FP Lipari as well to move to live aboard. I have a question regarding the anchor: I’d like to buy a Mantus or a Rocna, what weigh you suggest on the base of experience? 25 or 30 kg? Many thanks. All the best!

To echo some other comments, its great to have your videos again! After you recover from this passage, it would be great if you could share your procedure for heaving-to. Also, I think you covered this once upon a time, but do you carry (and ever deploy) a drogue and sea-anchor? Would a drogue, or even trailing a warp of line, have been sufficient to slow you down in this situation (to allow the bad weather to pass)?
@SailingDoubleTrouble
@SailingDoubleTrouble 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug! We do not have drogues or sea anchors, but have researched them a lot. We have taken advice and their use is a bit complicated as we are a 2 handed crew. So if we needed to we have long lines and a spare anchor that we can deploy if needed. Explaining the setup for heaving to is a bit long, so maybe worth a video!

Thanks for sharing. We missed your vids. Really appreciate them. Regarding heaving to…. I’ve often wondered if cats do a good job of that. Did you see the ‘slick effect’ upwind? The smoothing that sometimes happens to the waves? I’m writing before finishing viewing.. hope you didn’t answer in vid. :) I’m hoping you’ll show how you drifted and speed over ground etc. Many times I see people on KZfaq slowing boat down to arrive at port in daylight. I’ve never understood that. If you can heave to it seems to me best to make good speed while the wind blows. Heave to 10 miles off. Better than slowing and then the wind dies and you aren’t where you hoped. Or am I missing something? (I’m an armchair admiral so I suppose it IS possible. :)
@SailingDoubleTrouble
@SailingDoubleTrouble 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, heaving-to is a little tricky. We were battling a 2-3 knot current as well, so when we heaved to we were still doing a knot or so to 'hold' position. Regarding slowing early on a passage, in this case we had weather information and knew there were consistent and milder conditions north of Tuvalu. We just needed to avoid the 30+knot headwinds onto Fiji. Typically we slow the boat on the evening before arrival and just sail slower until we near land. All our approaches to new arrival ports we do during good light!
@tonyfromaus7855
@tonyfromaus7855 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailingDoubleTrouble thanks for that. I was talking more generally about slow downs, didn’t mean to imply it was about your trip. Yours was very sensible and interesting to ‘park’ mid ocean. :) Sorry for not being clear. ‘A bit tricky’ clarifies it a bit, maybe not all cats heave to well. I have seen other couples slowing down from hundreds of miles out…. still seems strange to me. If you have time can you speak to the ‘slick effect’? Did you see any smoothing upwind of your beam? Again, thanks heaps for sharing.
