Before you come to the land of shadow Miquella was so conflicted about what he was about to do he literally had to abandon his compassion to do it, and when you talk to the half that was holding him back she's so desperate to stop him that she asks you to mercy kill him, if that is how badly Miquella wanted to stop himself, then I wonder if he brought you to the land of shadow because he subconsciously wanted to make sure that his plan could fail, like the only way he could convince himself to go through with it was if there was another lord that could succeed where he failed if he wasn't strong enough in the end
