Really great explanation. I’ve got a question though: at 8:48 why would C7#11 use the 4th mode of melodic minor? Wouldn’t that have a B natural in it (C, D, Eb, F, G, A, B)?
@EricBowman
@EricBowman 20 сағат бұрын
Thanks, it would be the 4th mode of g melodic minor (C, D, E, F#, G, A, Bb)

hi! two questions, at 16:55 i dont understand what the reason setting to saw down vs saw up works. this is probably due to a lack of understanding fully how the mod remap works on my part. and question 2, when you are setting the notes in the pitch at the start of the tutorial, does this make it so that the arp will always be in the key of the notes that you chose as long as the steps in LFO 1 are at least high enough to where you arent actually playing the note that you are pressing on the keyboard. hope that makes sense the way i asked it. edit- i understand the saw down vs up, im still not sure about the key tho.. also the difference between global snap and transpose snap... i been playing around with it today and im not positive what each does

2:00 Once you get to this point you realize that there is 12 keys with each having a unique major scale from which you can take the 7 modes. At this point you can already spend your life practising those in various ways. Jazz Theory is endless

❤GREAT video! My two cents;study piano&drums regardless of primary instrument;although melodic,harmonic,& rhythmic permutations are nearly infinite,become familiar with what I like to call the BIG7 scales;Major,Harmonic Major,melodic minor,harmonic minor,diminished,V diminished,& whole tone ❤ I thank Jesus everyday for filling my life with music;I started singing in childhood,playing various instruments at 16,I’m 73 now&shred out everyday!❤

I like that too many times the pianist plays a giant chord and the guitar robot says: Nope, too many notes. That sums up in-studio experience between pianists and guitarists xD

I hold a PhD in physics and play jazz (Guitar). I was delighted to see the harmonic series as your starting point, Eric. This stems from the solution to the the wave equation for a guitar string that is pinned at two end points (nut and bridge). Similar results are obtained for a closed tube horn when excited by the player's breath/lips. Many music schools have eliminated the fundamental course "The Physics of Music" to make way for new topics in modern jazz. That is a big mistake because the physics of sound production is at the heart of harmony ( e.g. Pythagoras and his single string guitar = musical "Big Bang") . I am sometimes called upon to give a ZOOM lecture on this topic - the first Giant Step to understanding musical instruments. It is not that hard when explained intuitively and it gives the solid foundation for further learning in music, including jazz chords and improvisation. Thank You!

And I went to business school and picked up the guitar in my early 40:s. Oh how I wish I'd started playing in middle school and then studied theoretical physics 😅

Hi Erik, i just downloaded the presets. Most of them are very usable and very good. I encounter a problem with some of them, i think it is because of my setup. I use linux Manjaro and the vital synth is an AppImage, so just a 1 file run program. When i open --Modern Super Saw2 everything is OK, But if i open --Modern Super Saw vital crashes. Not a big deal on this preset, but as an example. Maybe can you tell me the main difference between the two so i can find out what the problem is with my setup. Thank you for your effort. Jean

Are you using Vital version 1.5 or greater?
@germona
@germona 19 күн бұрын
@@EricBowman Hi Eric, i can not see the version number. I have noticed now that when i hit the advanced tab in the stand alone Vital Appimage, vital crashes no matter which preset i load, BUT, when i load vital in my DAW Ardour as a VST, everything works fine. Sometimes i use the standalone version to quickly try to follow a good video like this one, but most of the times i use it in the DAW. So problem solved. I am still looking for a good cello or fiddle preset, maybe it is too hard to make? Thanks anyway. Jean
@EricBowman
@EricBowman 19 күн бұрын
@@germona You might have a different version installed for standalone. That sometimes happens when people upgrade to a new version but don't replace the vst files for their DAW. You can see the version number by clicking the "V" logo in the upper left of Vital. Realistic solo cello or fiddle is pretty hard to synthesize from scratch, but group strings is a little easier since a lot of the detail gets lost in the group sound. I have a preset for that on my vol. 2 pack. The volume 2 pack was made to work on all versions of Vital :) You can get pretty close to a bowed string instrument using Karplus-Strong String Synthesis but sustaining the note instead of the decay I use here. Best of luck and thanks for the support!
@germona
@germona 19 күн бұрын
@@EricBowman Ok Eric i found the version numbers, they look the same 1.5.5, so there must be something wrong with the appimage.

Thanks for this vid. I have a question. I play bass. I was playing a song that called for a D2 leading to Amaj7, but when the pianist played D2 I played a low E. It sounded great. But what is the theory behind why it sounded great?

hi i dunno if you will see this as it is an old video, but i have a question. When you are setting up the macro for the FM part, is that just so that it can be controlled with a midi controller or is there another reason that I am not wrapping my head around. (i could just be missing something obvious as there is ALOT to this synth) also i wanna say I have been using your videos to learn Vital for a couple months and really wanna say thank you! I have bought some of your preset packs as a way to support the work you do ( my fav prob being the rhodes which i got in the sounds you know pack (i think it was that one, i bought a few). even tho i try not to use presets because i wanna learn to do it myself, i really appreciate the work you put out here for us. thanks in advance if you see my question and are able to answer!

Thanks for your support! I usually assign parameters to macros if I think it’s something someone might want to adjust or something somebody might want to modulate during a phrase.

It might be my individual experience but I was taught all this information on an undergraduate level degree. This covers jazz harmony 1 - 4 of the Berklee classes I think. The time and money would've been better spent practicing, performing and having a mentor. Although, this is a great video to have an overview of what one will see in jazz harmony classes.
