@@averagejoeswhiskey TBH the ABC stores are a lot better depending on what you're looking for. It's the prices: PX pricing usually beats ABC by a few $ at least - and there's no tax (ex: EW 1783 was $12 this past month).

OGD 114 is $29-32 in michigan, Buffalo trace is $25 . HH grain to glass is overpriced at that store. I would put my old dusty 2001 EW 7yr. 90 proof black label against it ALL DAY 👍. GREAT VIDEO 🥃😉 CHEERS

I did see it but I think it was like $300 or something crazy. All of their top shelf bottles were priced pretty crazy. After the guy told me not to record I asked if they’d come down on the prices but they were only willing to come down like 10%.

It wasn’t in the main whiskey section, it was near the register on a shelf behind some boxes. And at msrp, and no sales tax, and they had a second one! I probably should have grabbed both but hopefully someone else will be excited to find it!

Yes and no 😆 I still haven’t opened it, was thinking I could trade it with some other stuff for a GTS but that hasn’t materialized. Maybe I’ll open it when I hit 1k subscribers! It won’t be worth the price but I’m sure it will be good.

Thankfully I was back by then! So tired I almost didn’t go but stumbled into a Russell’s 15 and a Blanton’s 😎. I’d been searching for a rr15 the whole trip and then VA gave me a nice welcome home present. You got an amazing haul though! That’s like the best you could possibly do in one day anywhere!

@@averagejoeswhiskey There are more RR15 than the past batches of 13 (possibly combined). Crazy confluence of bigger batches and fewer buyers in 2024 is making it a great year to collect. I thought I'd spend less this year but every week new bottles come out. Thankfully my bourbon club brings in their new releases and that saves me a little money (and more importantly shelf space). Tried RR15 last week, and while it has a killer nose, the whiskey itself wasn't a $250 pour for me. It's great and the kind of thing I'd load up on for $120, but I'm not huge on paying over $10/year on anything under 20 years.

@@apeekintimeyou’re right, they dropped a ton, it felt like VA was giving them out like candy last week, everyone was posting them on the local FB and Reddit groups. Hard to say any whiskey is worth $250 but I do think it’s really good, nose and finish in particular. Not the best whiskey I’ve ever tasted but if I can find another one at msrp once I’ve finished this bottle, I think I’d buy it again.

I got bangers at the last two Va ABC drops. I also get my pop to take me to the coast guard exchange occasionally. They often have stuff sitting on the shelf that is allocated at Va ABC. Last time i went they had Bookers 2023-04 just sitting on the shelf. A week later the was still one sitting there

VA ABC is run like a psuedo government agency. the stores staff typicaly do not know much, or care if you buy or not. They are not bad, they are more like Wallmart workers.. they seem to be only interested in running the checkout counter to get you out of the store fast and not much else. All the selection and inventory is run from the Richmond distrbution center, and the people that do the ordering do not seem to have any relationship to the distilleries.. they are a joke.. just look at the inventory.. they have like 10 rows of Jim Beam white label.. not much variety or even depth to the selection. 10:07

I don’t disagree with anything you said, but to be fair, this store has an average to below average selection. There are a handful of stores in my area with a better to much better selection, much better for VA ABC at least. But yes, they don’t seek out knowledgeable employees and the ones who know their stuff don’t get the accolades they deserve.

The Belmont 10 year is a drain pour. Lots of good bourbon on VABC shelves. Sad that the John J. Is allocated now. Used to be able to walk in and grab a case at a time.

That Bernheim BP gets overlooked a lot, great bottle! Finding Bowman on the shelf used to be one of the best things about VA ABC but it’s allocated now as of a few months ago. But they usually hang around for awhile after a drop.

VA drops are mostly shit.. you are better off driving to Maryland and buy it.. or just drive to Kentucky stores are way better, you can find what you got on the shelf.. of most stores.

Big fan of the bulliett 12 I wish the Bardstown was 45 cheaper then I’d get it I buy their origin series all the time currently drinking the wheater and I really love the rye. Don’t get the ECBP in my area but we do get Larceny BP which I like a lot. I don’t buy NULU just overpriced MGP. Can get a Buzzards roost for 30 less and have a great experience. Still looking for a Evernorth in from Ohio so I’ll have to run to Michigan about 2 hours away. Have a NDP near me River Roots that do fantastic picks you should look them up. I’m a fan of JB but the Hardin creek are just over my cap for what I’ll spend on a bottle of alcohol. I have a set 150 cap with tax on a bottle. These go for 160 + per bottle haven’t seen the box set. Big fan of Nashville barrel if you see one don’t sleep on it!! Enjoy!!

Agree with almost everything but that nulu double oaked is exceptional MGP. Maybe they’re not all as good as this one but I’m absolutely in love with the store pick that I have. I was just looking at river roots stuff on Seelbach’s. 14 years 7 months old, 138 proof, finished in port barrels for 6 years. Sounds unreal but the 299 price tag was too much. And Nashville barrel co is another I’ve been meaning to try but will probably have to order. Thanks for the input as always!

Some say the Zeppelin Bend whiskey out of Michigan is very good, named for a rope knot. I am more of a cheapskate with 3 rebuys, the 100 proof Old Grand-Dad, the 100 proof Early Times blue top, and the 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey aged 7 years. $21 to $31 at Kroger stores where I live in Kentucky.

I buy every EH Taylor I can get my hands on at a good price. It hits a BT sweet spot at 100proof for a reasonable price(usually). My favorite EHT of all time is my SiB store pick. It’s delicious. I have a good relationship with a local store and was fortunate to get one for $89. I really like JJB at retail as well. My last bottle had a beautiful strawberry note. IMO, EHT SiBs are older with an oakier profile. I have a Blanton’s gold, but haven’t opened it yet. It’s more of a collector’s piece for me. I’d like to get my hands on a Straight From the Barrel. I didn't like regular Maker's Mark but Rare Breed is excellent. Elijah Craig Small Batch and KC9 are both good. Evan Williams and Rebel 100 are the two bourbons that got me hooked.
