Hello Timo, I'm a beginner at rock/metal singing, I use a lot of compression/air pressure to achieve tones I want to reach (in terms of general tone and highness). This demands a lot of energy, which I assume is normal in this kind of music. I focus on reducing overcompression/over projecting to enhance the global tone (and save up some stamina). But "engaging" the whole body is also what's making a performance a bit more "alive" in my opinion. Do you think singing without air pressure for this style of music would be something to think of? Would I be able to recreate the types of distorsion I get when putting more air pressure? I'd like to know your thoughts about it

Hi Timo! Thanks so much for your video, I found it very helpful. I am a classical singer (22y/o), and i just recently started doing the exercises you recommend. I think that sometimes I forcefully “press down” my thyroid cartilage when I sing, my suspicions are that I am not using the yawning muscle, but the long muscle that goes from the back of the tongue all the way down. Is that bad? How do I “isolate” the right (yawning) muscle, should I actively be using it, or just focusing on relaxing? Also another question, when I sing in the lower register I sometimes hear my voice crack, like a radio, I don’t know how to explain. What is it, is it bad, and how do I work with it? Many thanks!💓💓

Hello Timo! Love your videos! Can you please clarify your breath support technique? So to produce sound do we use the air that diagram pushes from the lungs while naturally ascending/contacting and we control the "speed" of its ascention with rib cage? How is it possible to do a staccato with this technique or am I missing something? AndI have two problems with this approach. First, I'm getting out of breath fairly quickly. Is it an indication of insufficient lung capacity for singing (I have extensive swimming and running background) or am I doing it wrong?And second problem is that my heart beats against diagram and this creates push of air to which my vocal cords react. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you!

Timo, this is great stuff. The intervals in the yawning position reminds me of an exercise i was given by a local vocal coach years ago. The exercise involved using thumb and index finger to push the jaw open, and then singing "la ga la ga la ga la ga la" over small intervals without allowing the jaw to close. It's a little like sticking the tongue out while yawning. Does that sound familiar and does that sound like something that would accomplish what you're suggesting?

Great comments. I think that a very valuable part of your teaching method is encouraging singers to pay attention to how they are feeling and to relax and rest when needed. It is indeed difficult to make positive changes after singing a certain way for a long time. Not to mention ego, there is muscle memory which can retain poor habits, and also the difficulty in finding good instruction. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. This is an excellent channel.

Thanks for your thoughtful and informative singing coaching videos. I had a really difficult journey through different singing technique and constant strain over decades. Many of your ideas have helped me. The most helpful things in my journey recently have been with posture, ie the muscles etc that support the vocal apparatus. Slouching forward for hours in my job has really damaged my posture. Focussing on strengthening my back and shoulders, bringing shoulder blades together, bringing head position back and over my shoulders (ie, reduce 'nerd neck'), raising a low tongue position, moving a slightly receded jaw forward and lifting the breastbone, as well as pelvic mobility and orthotics have all made a huge difference. A year ago I could not even speak without pain, and now I can sing simple songs with no problem. There's still a long way to go but your videos have helped a lot. Many singing coaches do not seem to emphasise to their students how important these aspects can be. I like that you focus on physiology instead of only using vague qualitative terms. Anyway, I hope this might help someone who is experiencing neck/throat muscle pain and tension when singing.

Hey Timo, very nice video again! Love your anatomic and simplified approach! Some thoughts though: as of my understanding, what you called whistle i think is more flageolet (tiny sound similar to head and falsetto), and whistle register is even above that and you literally whistle through the vocal chords. Also, never say never, falsetto and the vocal break can actually help in developing techniques like fry screaming and false vocal folds distortion, so telling people to strictly avoid these is pedagogically dangerous in my opinion. the voice is capable of a lot of sounds, and one should just learn to control all the aspects of the voice, of course while still being aware that some techniques are more demanding than others, same as a marathon and sprints are more demanding as walking. but that doesn’t mean we should just stop doing those high intensity activities, but do them in a balanced and healthy manner :) Also, regarding mix, i think if you pull the larynx, that would lead more to “pulled chest”/belt, and mixing is actually easier with an open throat/balanced or low larynx. by the way, one trick to find “mixed voice” is to start in falsetto and add vocal fry. the voice has so many dimensions and is such a complex instrument, and strictly avoiding certain types of coordinations in my opinion is wrong. though starting with a low larynx and open throat is certainly a very good starting point! Ah yeah and there’s another register/technique called subharmonics, which is awesome!! maybe something to include in your fry video if its not out yet ;)

Hey Timo, nice video again! Though i get more and more questions, as i’m trying to dive deep into this. What is the difference between low breathy chest notes and low breathy head voice notes? What you call head voice on your mid notes for me sounds and feels like very, very breathy chest. how can we know for sure, that the TA muscle is not activated at all? And isn’t the added vocal closure/compression activating the TA muscle, and thus not pure CT usage anymore? sorry for my complicated questions 😂

you have a very unique and fresh perspective on the voice, i disagree with some things, but in singing this is kind of inevitable. having a bit of nasal cavities can actually help the sound cut through more, and falsetto can help in learning certain techniques, so when you say these things are bad, i have to disagree. in the end, these are different sounds, we should just learn to control them and mix and match to taste. that said, your explanations on how everything works are killer!❤ wo kommst du her eigentlich? schöne grüße aus münchen!

Hi there! There can be different triggers to find this movement as explained in this video. Maybe try this: place on hand on your larynx and imagine you want to GENTLY push your hand away. This might help to find the movement! 😀

Timo hello! How we can check out if we are using Cricothyroid Muscles? If there any changing in the Larynx? for example Thyroid Cartilage tilted ?
@timoparker
@timoparker Ай бұрын
Hi there! There are two things that you can check. 1. Is your voice "flipping/ breaking"? If yes you most likely went into Falsetto and you are not using the CT muscle. 2. Is you larynx in a very high position in your throat? If yes chances are very high that you also went into Falsetto. The fuller and darker the sound is the higher the chances are that you are actually using the CT instead of the Falsetto mechanism. Hope this helps!

Timo hello! Can you help me please? Every time I try to yawn my hyoid bone just pull down thyroid cartilage? And this is no right. Can you suggest something ? I just can't yawn properly((( However between hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage is thyroid membrane? And we have to stretch thyroid membrane?
@timoparker
@timoparker Ай бұрын
Hi there! We want to stretch the swallowing muscle and strengthen the yawning muscle. The membrane of the thyroid cartilage gets compressed if you have your thyroid cartilage in a very high position or if the hyoid bone gets pulled down by the sternohyoid muscle. Maybe this video can help to gain some clarity: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8x9l7qLnKmYYJs.html You inspired me to make a video on "how to yawn". So stick around for this one :)

Ken Tamplin advocates for a low tongue. Certain singers advocate for a retracted "ball like" tongue in the mouth i.e not touching the bottom teeth. I guess people have to do what they need to in order to produce sounds because there seems to be several conflicting ideas.

Hi Timo, I'm curious about your opinion on vocal teachers who don't promote a low larynx? Chris Liepe, for example, recently posted a video specifically stating that the larynx should be free to go wherever it wants to go to achieve the sound you want. What do you think about this statement? I'm always confused about this issue!
