I had a Stud Finder Bridge installed on my 1959 Les Paul Special. This guitar sounded awesome, didn't think it could sound any better, but once the Stud Finder I was very much surprised by the difference that bridge made. Better note separation, a bit wider sounding, just better in every way. Thanks to Tom and Joe's team for having the passion and drive to solve this problem. Once they are back in stock, I plan on getting one for my 1961 SG Junior. If you are on the fence, just spend the money, it's completely worth it.

It looks like the setting is zero at all four corners of the gauge. Does the user have to file material off 3 venerable holes o get the desired measurement with the fourth corner being zero?

The new basic version of the Junior that Gibson is selling has corrected that ridiculous angle of the studs. BUT...if you pay over twice as much for the Custom Shop version the wrong angle is still there. Go figure. 🤷‍♂️

Im confused on the measurements. If I were using feeler gauges, I would use a 0.016-0.020 but this measures for 0.003-0.008? How does that make sense? What am I missing?
@musiccitybridge1657
@musiccitybridge1657 5 ай бұрын
First of all, these are two very different measurements; using a feeler gauge at the first fret gives you the action at the first fret but, because that number is dependent on the saddle height, it is not really a true nut slot height measurement. This is still used by a number of shops but it only works if you know EXACTLY how high your action is going to be for each string and exactly how much relief you have and preset them first, something that is not possible until the nut is correct. The Nut Slot Gauge avoids all of those complications. The Nut Slot Gauge is designed to measure the height of the nut slot compared to the height of the fret plane itself. This means that we are treating the nut like it was the "zero" fret and measuring it relationship to the height of the first and second frets, since these make up the immediate section of the fret plane. This means that you aren't affected by the saddle height or even the relief. Again, the problem is that you can't really set your action at the 12th or 15th fret until the nut height is correct. The Nut Slot gauge lets you do this in the right order and isn't affected by bent strings or action height or any other issues. As the Nut is a Zero Fret, it should sit somewhere between .000"-.005" higher than the first fret, depending on your preference. When you press a string down to play, you raise the string slightly over the next fret and so a .000", while it sounds like an ideal target height, will let the open strings buzz a bit more than the fretted ones. We like the .003' slot depth as our preference, and we use the .005" and .008" notches as a great way to go a bit at a time and sneak up on our final depth without going too far. (By the way, that setting should be the same across the neck though some people will set the E and A at .004". It is a common misconception that the bass strings should be higher in the nut. This leads to playing sharp in the first position and ignores the fact that the frets only encounter the bottom of the string and string gauge doesn't affect that at all.) Feel free to give us a call at 615-606-2720 to discuss this further.

In the video you say you are adjusting the studs under tension? I wasn’t able to do that, also had an issue with top also moving the bottom when I loosened it. Took tension off strings and seems to be working better now. Also the grooves where the adjustment wrench fits are not always in the right position to adjust as there is not. As much room between posts and pickup on a LP Jr. Can you possibly give me some further tips. Thanks

Definitely need to put 4 equal notches on bottom piece of the post to be able to use the wrench if you need to adjust more than one turn. Can’t even adjust on full turn as it hits the pickup.

All I can say is this is the fastest and consistent method I’ve used and I’m hooked. I just bought one and wow, it’s so easy and reliable. I hate feeler gauges because I play guitars with radiuses on the fretboard and the curvature makes it hard to get an accurate reading. This method works GREAT. Ended up going through all my other guitars and taking off a little extra that was free on the nuts and big difference. A couple of my guitars were over .008 so took them down to around .004. No buzzing at all. Great job @musiccitybridge . Fast shipping too!

Genuine Question because I'm actually interested in this product: if the bridge is machines so well that it will not move around, how are you able to adjust the height for the high and low sides without running into the problem of the bridge locking up on the posts and eliminates the ability to adjust it?
@musiccitybridge1657
@musiccitybridge1657 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question! While there is usually not much height difference between the bass and treble sides, there may be a bit and when there is, we recommend using the MCB Locking Studs which will accommodate any angular difference. With the Stud Finder or any other stop tailpiece, there is over a hundred pounds of string tension so the tailpiece will be pretty solid, but you can keep it from rolling forward by snugging down locking studs. They don't need to be very tight and over tightening can break them, so we recommend setting your action, then loosening the strings and lightly locking them then tuning up again. Please feel free to give us a call at 615-6062720 or email us at [email protected] if you have any further questions.

Just bought the Savvy Bridge and Locking Studs for my Gibson Les Paul Junior. Was up half the night trying to figure out why I couldn't adjust the bridge height after trying to tighten the top portion of the locking stud down to the lower half without spinning the lower portion also. (Just as in this video @ 2:20). Maybe not so much why, but how to keep it from spinning, I could see it was going to be an issue when I screwed the lower section in. It fits rather loose. Not that that's a bad thing. With the guitar in your video, the bridge is far enough from the pickup to use your tools for raising and lowering bridge height. With the LP Jr., the pickup is very close to the bridge and the two notches for the adjustment tool are just out of reach of it being a useful tool. The lower section has only two notches for maneuvering with the tool. If you were to provide 4 notches it might be possible to use the tool. 5, or 6 notches would give you plenty of flexibility finding a comfortable holding spot where the bottom section could be secured and the locking top piece could be tightened down. I ended up taking the MCB Studs out and reinstalling the factory studs. This allowed me to see how much I had scratched up the finish under the bridge because of the sharp stamped metal edges on the bottom of the tool. Especially on the 90° bend, (really hard to keep tool up against the bottom of the bridge since it moves up and down at this point. Maybe mask off the area that could be contacted by the tool/wrench. This left me with a pretty canted Bridge, similar to the factory. Possibly more since it seems to want to be further out than the original. The D reads slightly flat and the G reads slightly sharp. I'm guessing if I could use the locking studs and roll the bridge back, it might make the intonation closer. Not that it's far off. Just enough to make chords above the twelfth fret sound, off.

I have a Junior too. 2024 model. Thanks for this write up. I too saw the locking stud still turning in from his marked height and was wondering if anybody would question that. Also I don't want to mark up my Nitro finish either. Did you get any answers or figure out a fix to this issue? I don't want to buy this product and go through all the modification only to find out this issue getting in the way.
