These pickups are inherently quiet anyway, so why have a reverse-wound? Doesn't make sense. There is no reverse-wound middle with Kinman or Dimarzio Areas etc etc, so why does Lace have a reverse-wound???

I’ve been eyeing Alumatones for several years now and think they’re good pickups but haven’t purchased any yet for two reasons. The first is poor marketing. The couple of 90 second videos out there tell me absolutely nothing about how the pickups are made, how they color the sound, how they compare to traditional pickups, or what sound chain is being used. In other words there is no benchmark to compare them to. The second reason is that it’s no secret that Alumatones cost much less than traditional copper wound pickups to manufacture yet Lace prices them at the boutique price tier. Many people understand this and I believe that’s why Lace continues to exist but doesn’t see any real commercial success.

Those transformers should be shielded because they are pick-ups too.

I LOVE Lace Sensor pickups! They have their own thing going on, and they are largely misunderstood, I believe.

What was that graph? Is it supposed to be the Riffmaster's frequency response? And the Man o War's response is exactly the same, just inverted? That doesn't sound right.

I have a set of the golds in my strat and have always loved them. I had used them many years on stage and eventually went with the fat 50's. But I missed that even, controlled sound that Lace sensors gave me. I paid 200 for a set just a couple of years ago, and I am so glad I did. But now, I want a bit more aggression on the bridge pup, so I am going to buy a hot gold for my bridge position. Great sound from these. I would have already installed one but I don't enjoy having to take my strat apart and do the soldering. Thanks for this video.

I have that acoustic pickup and use it on my alverez regent 5212 Dreadnaught on the bridge and it’s actually really good. Of course it’s meant for resonators but it works great for causing natural feedback on a acoustic

hi, thanks for this , ,I'm thinking of getting one of these pickups for a sitar. , iv a few questions , 1, can the transformer be moved from under the pickup plate to the side ,as I need the space under the pickup for the sympathetic strings to pass under the pickup , 2, do you need to and a volume pot as I don't need to change volume just need it full all the time and it would save me from drilling into the sitar to add one ,3 if I did need a pot just a volume pot what size should it be 500 or 250 ,,, iv tried to email the company a few times but they haven't got back to me , thanks

Great overview. I’m just rediscovering Lace pickups recently in a search for a drop-in replacements pups for a newly purchased Fender Jazz player bass, whose pickups leave a bit to be desired. My previous Lace experience had been in the 80s or early 90s with a friend’s strat, which I really liked the responsiveness and feel of. In my recent search, while looking at the usual suspects - Dimarzio, SD, Barts, Nordstrand, et al - I stumbled across the Alumitone line. Not only visually striking, the demo video sounded great too. The tech is at least equally compelling! Def on my very shortlist, the pre-wired harness may tip it over the top - the wiring in this vid is simply artisanal :). Glad to see you all really swinging for the fences and keeping the innovation moving forward. Excited to get a set installed in one or more of my basses and put it thru the paces. Cheers!

Would love to see these as an option in their basses. I recently purchased a Jazz Player (MIM). The overall build quality is good but the passive pickups just seem somewhat flat and underwhelming, not much personality. I like older dimarzios for their bite and character, but these Alumitone pups have really got my curiosity piqued! They’re really striking!

Great arrangement of Autmn Leaves!!! I was gonna run out and buy one but I AB'ed his sound with my guitar plugged into my preamp and computer and I 'm just gonna save the money. (an Eastman with the import KA pickup I thought was muddy but it's not) No big difference but, if my pickup stunk I would definitely get this LACE no doubt. That's a $5000.00 amp he's running through BTW.

I only run the Alumitones in my bass guitars. What people don't realize is the output of the Alumitone is actually extremely low until it hits that secondary he was talking about. That secondary is actually the secondary winding of a transformer. The Alumitone pickups are really high quality audio transformers with a magnetic transducer on the primary side, instead of an electrical source. It's actually a pretty ingenious design.

I want a PJ set so bad, but they're so expensive. My Helix is my absolute favorite bass. That's what made me want to put them in my Fender jazz and my Peavey KOA. Love it! Just wish I could afford it. Thanks Lace, for a killer look and sound! God bless

If you have a pre 2017 G&L and are interested in this loaded pickguard, be warned that only 3 of the 8 pickguard screws lineup. I'm not sure if they match up with a 2017 later G&L. I know that G&L made some changes to the pickguard post 2017 but I'm not sure what those changes are.

I recently bought two Alumitone Bass Bar 3.5s for a custom made bass. I found them on Reverb. Because they were represented as being in mint condition, I made the huge mistake of not measuring the DC resistance before installing them. The neck pickup worked fine, but the bridge pickup was dead. I pulled it out and found that there was no continuity at all between the orange "hot" wire and the white/black "ground" or common wire. I hoped to be able to figure out the issue, but the tiny transformers were so tightly wedged into the aluminum frame that I could not remove them without running the risk of completely destroying the pickup. I wrote to Lace, and never received the courtesy of a response. I have written to many pickup manufacturers and these folks are the ONLY ones not to bother answering my emails. I ended up sending the pickup back to the seller who understood the situation perfectly and is refunding my money. From searching online, I have found that Lace is fairly renowned for their awful customer service. I have also heard that, because the pickups are so cheap to manufacture, that when one fails in warranty Lace just tosses them out and sends a new pickup to take the place of the defective one. Most pickups are way over-priced, so I am not singling out Lace for price gouging as that is pretty typical for so-called name brands. But it is very disappointing that they are completely unwilling to help a customer. This is what turns customers into ex-customers. I did find another bass bar from a reputable source, for a much reduced price, but I sincerely doubt I will ever buy anything else from Lace.
